A few Olympic-related programmes I spotted on the schedule for Christmas ...
Happy viewing, and Happy Christmas :)
The RTÉ Sports Awards 2012 (RTE1 9.30pm Sun 23 December)
Darragh Maloney presents live coverage of the annual ceremony, as the Sports Person of the Year, Team of the Year and Manager of the Year are revealed, as well as the recipient of the Hall of Fame Award. The nominees for the Sports Person of the Year are Fionnuala Britton, Rob Kearney, Karl Lacey, Rory McIlroy, Michael McKillop, Joseph O'Brien, Mark Rohan, Henry Shefflin, Jason Smyth and Katie Taylor. McIlroy will be considered as the favourite to take the crown after finishing at the top of the money list for both the European and US PGA Tours, in addition to winning his second Major at the USPGA Championship and being part of the successful Ryder Cup team. However, the likes of gold medal-winning Olympic boxer Katie Taylor, and Heineken Cup winner and European Player of the Year Rob Kearney have also had stellar years

First - The Official Film of The London 2012 Olympics (RTE2 7pm Thurs 27 December)
Documentary following 12 athletes as they prepare for London 2012, charting the highs and lows of their journeys to compete at the Olympics. This film offers an insight into the lives and challenges faced by competitors including Kenya's runner David Rudisha, Britain's track cyclist Laura Trott, Ireland's boxer Katie Taylor and American swimmer Missy Franklin

    Olympics 2012: A Golden Games (BBC1 2pm, Sat 29 December)
Eddie Butler presents a look back at the best moments from the London Games, celebrating the performances of global stars such as Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, and British heroes including Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah, Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins (I think this is the compilation which BBC1 showed at the conclusion of the Games)

Olympics 2012: Through the Lens (BBC1 3pm Sat 29 December)
An alternative look at the London Games, as members of the BBC Sport presenting and reporting teams share their favourite memories of the extraordinary event. Steve Cram and Hazel Irvine are among those to reveal what is was like to cover the biggest sporting occasion of the year

    Superstars 2012 (BBC1 6.45pm Sat 29 Dec)
Gabby Logan hosts a one-off revival of the sporting challenge which sees 16 medal-winning athletes from Team GB competing over several different disciplines. They may all have what it takes to win Olympic medals, but taking part in Superstars is a different matter altogether.

The Last Leg of The Year (Channel 4 11.05pm Sun 30 Dec)
Comedian Adam Hills is joined by fellow comic Josh Widdicombe and journalist Alex Brooker to provide an alternative review of the significant moments of 2012, including the Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and the Paralympics

I was at the filming for Superstars and got to watch the kayaking and swimming events. Used to watch it back in the day so good to see them coming back with an updated one off show.

    RTE SPOTY coming on now...:)

If Katie Taylor doesn't win Irish SPOTY tonight then im starting an online campaign to have it scrapped. It would be an utter disgrace.
By 2010, she had 4 EU, 4 European and 3 world titles won and yet somehow Graham McDowell won it that year.

    2000 Sonia O'Sullivan
    2001 Mick McCarthy
    2002 Pádraig Harrington
    2003 Barry Geraghty
    2004 Ronan O'Gara
    2005 Seán Óg Ó hAilpín
    2006 Henry Shefflin
    2007 Pádraig Harrington
    2008 Pádraig Harrington
    2009 Brian O'Driscoll
    2010 Graeme McDowell
    2011 Rory McIlroy
    2012 ??

I would be shocked if Katie doesn't win the main award. But it's nice to see some great athletes (from many Sports) nominated this year.

Wow. Great attitude from Michael McKillop...:)

Katie captured the nation's imagination and will win tonight.

But excellent cases can be made for Jason Smyth, Michael McKillop and Rory McIlroy...

What does Mark Rohan have to do to make your shortlist, Silvio? :D

    Fair enough :)

This Awards show used to be a boisterous affair with plenty of drink flowing. The recession must be biting, it has all the atmosphere of a Leaving Cert Exam this year. Having sad that, some of the interviewees are very good.

Looks suspiciously like the RTE Canteen was raided for those chairs ... unlike the Late Late Show which visits the RTE Canteen for guests!

About time they gave Jack Charlton a Lifetime achievement Award. Legend.

It's a public vote, if one of the GAA teams organised their supporters to vote tonight, they would win.

It was so close in the end too. She won it the hard way, which is appropriate for and Olympic Champion...

How did Ryle Nugent get that gig..?

Billy Walsh got team manager of the year....delighted for him! Jim McGuinness was a great candidate but Billy's success is on another level.

I'd be hoping the Paralympic team would get it. More gold than all the others put together.

Christ i dread to think this could have easily happened during the love/hate finale last sunday night. Looks like the drug taking didnt stop at RTE when poor Gerry Ryan passed away

It has happened more than once on ITV (not that it justifies RTE doing the same)

I'm as impressed and grateful as anyone for the tremendous success of our boxer's and Paralympians...but really those are individual success stories...not exactly a team success per se.

People from Donegal are very parochial when it comes to voting for their own.

In the case of the boxers though perhaps it was a team effort as even the 2 guys who were eliminated early stayed and encouraged the others

Or they decided to vote for an actual team. Regardless of how much they support each other, boxing and most athletics is an individual sport. :)

I'm off to my bed, disgruntled...

True, and there is no doubt a great team spirit, as was the case with the Paralympians that may have spurred the other athletes on that bit more, but I think the team awards should be reserved for team sports....just my opinion and I can see why others feel boxers/Paralympians should have won.

RTE have been in contact to apologise for the incorrect listing of Archdeacon O'Brien as deceased and are investigating how it occurred #gaa

I just caught the end of 'First - The Official Film of the London 2012 Olympics' there. It looked interesting, very well presented and it was nice to see Katie Taylor featuring prominently. I will watch the full programme in due course.
