    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Apocalypse_(2013_film)

This is already my "One to Watch" for 2013.

Interesting story idea in which all the actors and celebrities who star in it will play themselves, facing the end of the world. I'll post updates as they become available...
The film takes place during and after a massive celebrity-filled party at James Franco’s house. Sadly, not all the celebrities pictured here will survive the attack on Earth. The film’s plot will follow Rogen, Baruchel and a few others who survive the apocalypse and figure out what to do next. Co-stars James Franco, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, Jay Baruchel and Jason Segel, the film has also brought along Rihanna, Emma Watson and Aziz Ansari along for the fun.

Pretty amazed that Apatow isn't involved..!

Seems interesting, and for once Rogan can't be given out to for playing himself!

Have to say... this doesn't look too bad!

Always good to see some self-deprecating humour from some well-known Hollywood comedic faces.

While attending a party at James Franco's house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.

Someone should put kick-ass Emma Watson in her own movie and thereby solve the dilemma discussed on the other thread about Female Leads in Hollywood Films. :D

Well.. they've put the best comedy actors of the last decade in one ensemble movie. Colour me very excited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

I was more excited until I watched the trailer. Now I have basically seen the entire movie!

Nice try, but April Fools was yesterday.

This is a fake trailer, right?

This looks great, aliens, hollywood in flames and drugs.

Funniest guys in one room - am looking forward to this a lot.

It's really good, don't watch that trailer if you haven't already though, ruins a lot of things that had me in stitches in the cinema.

Michael Sera takes the piss out of himself very well.

If you like these guys you will like this film. I generally like their movies and enjoyed this.
If you don't like Seth rogan/Jonah hill etc stay away.

Leave your brain outside before watching.

    Ugh I hate Seth Rogan

Its getting good reviews for a comedy film. It will be excellent for what it is essentially.

I like Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill et al, but in the trailer McBride steals the show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,604 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

It got more laughs out of me than any comedy in the cinema before. I think it suffers slightly in the fact that the first act is incredible and after that it's only good but there are some fantastic moments in it. It helped that I'd only seen tv spots though and didn't watch that trailer before it as it really does ruin some great parts.

Definite brain at the door film, and the humor won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you liked Pineapple Express, Knocked Up, and all those other stoner films, you'll love this!

Luckily, i do, so i lapped this up, and definitely one of the best comedies i have seen in a very long time. The strange ensemble of a cast works very well together. McBride does steal the show in his scenes, but Hill has his exceptional moments also (especially towards the end). There were some down time and gags that didn't work, but they were well overshadowed by genuine i'm-about-to-pee-myself moments.

Again, you need to like the Rogan-esque comedies to like this. 9/10!

I thoroughly enjoyed this, and yes do leave your brain out the door for this movie like others have said.

Great craic, everyone allows liberal amounts of piss taking at their own expense. Very enjoyable altogether.

Really enjoyed this as well, was at a sold out cineworld showing this evening and there was a great atmosphere at the screening, really enjoyed it, have to say it was one of the best cinema experiences I've had in a while and I usually hate packed screenings!

Only annoying thing is that the couple of trailers do give away a lot of funny parts which just don't have the same impact when you're expecting them.

Saw this last night, thought it was pretty good for what it was.

High brow it aint but it had some funny moments, some good cameos, "the gimp" being a highlight.

Leave the brain in neutral and its grand to pass a couple of hours.

Excellent film, it was perfect, it might be the best film of the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Really loved this. For those who didn't like it, you obviously weren't meant to.

There were many laugh out loud moments, more than any comedy I've seen recently. Best comedy of the past few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,182 ✭✭✭nyarlothothep

Just on reflection, it kind of reminded of Ghostbusters a little bit, just this perfect chemistry between the actors, the scenario, the significance of special effects etc. I enjoy their comedic vision/sense of humour, that and the plot line in this film directly appealed to me, I love that kind of stuff and to see it in a film is so cool. I can't believe they slagged off Your Highness though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Yeah, think I'm gonna see this tonight actually.

    Reviews have me swayed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    Gotta say.. I loved this!

Since when do we need comedy to be high-brow? This had it's fair share of dick and fart jokes, but the cast delivered in spades and it was a buddy comedy and relationship-study at it's heart.

As mentioned, the cast were all great.. but McBride was superb (as always), but there's wasn't one weak link in there.

I do somewhat hope Jay Baruchel gets a few more leading roles out of this. Remember watching himself and Rogen in Judd Apatow's 'Undeclared' years ago and thinking he was very talented, but apart from a few smallish roles (he did star in 'She's Out My League', but don't know if many have seen it.. and also 'Million Dollar Baby' obviously), he hasn't hit the big time in the same way as the other Apatow alumni's.

It was better than the majority of what the cast has done lately, and I can't wait to see it again.

Definitely one of best comedies of the last few years IMO.

EDIT: This is what inspired it.. filmed about 5 years ago now..

I reckon there's an awful lot of improv scenes in this movie. Wouldn't normally be mad about this kind of film but i have to admit there was some really funny parts in it. Michael Cera's cameo was very good.

This movie was brilliant, I had a pain in my side from laughing at it!
And the end of the film was just genius and out of nowhere :D

Thought it was awful tbh. Pure indulgence from Rogan and his buddies. All the funniest parts were in the trailer and I nearly fell asleep about 45 minutes in.

The best cameos were Michael Cera and Channing Tatum. Channing Tatum was brilliant for his two lines!

It was grand. Sporadic as anything, the quality deviating wildly from scene to scene. Most of the effects-heavy scenes were dreadful, especially the first one outside Franco's house (that said, the scene in the grocery store was handled really well). Humour hit and miss as well, but hard to resist chuckling at times - and, honestly, some of the lower brow bits were the funniest (the 'cum' fight between Franco and McBride particularly, which really just should not have been as amusing as it was!). I wouldn't be any big fan of Danny McBride, but he's larger than life here in a good way, and the film certainly suffers when he's not around wisecracking (his final scene felt 'off' though, IMO). The banter is nice & energetic, as you'd expect from putting a load of friends in a room and telling them to just go nuts. Yes, some of it is absolutely dreadful, but it's lively, playful and self-aware enough to be mostly entertaining.

Although this and the various other films from the 'Apatow' ranch hardly warrant any sort of in-depth attention, someone does not need to a proper critical survey of the underlying homophobia and crises of masculinity playing out on-screen :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

    just back from this myself.

i thought it was brilliant. seriously wasnt expecting that at all as im not a fan of anyone in it. francos probably the one im most familiar with.

the effects are also alot better than i was expecting from something that really hangs on the interactions of the main cast. really liked the designs of the demons and when it has actions scenes theyre actually quite good.

good dumb fun with people ripping the piss out of themselves.

    solid 7 out of 10

Thought this was hilarious. Went in pretty much blind bar the first teaser and it was great to watch a comedy where i hadn't already seen the best jokes. McBride and Robinson stole the show for me. Thought the effects work was surprisingly good too and even though I was laughing for most of the running time I still felt more of an imminent threat to the characters than I did in World War Z last week :pac:

You should check out out the recent Sean William Scott (hear me out...) ice hockey movie Goon, it's much better than you would expect. Baruchel has a smallish part in it but he also wrote it. he's a talented guy and I would like to see him start landing a few bigger roles.

Watched 'Goon' last year, and didn't think much of it unfortunately.. although Liev Schreiber was great as always!

Remember reading Baruchel wrote it though alright.
