Hi just passed my driving test a while back and applied for my licence today. Just wondering will the new rule be in place then so I will get a new credit card type licence or the usual paper one? Cheers!!

My husband's in the same boat. We're hanging on for the new licence. The way I see it, the paper ones are flimsy and will soon fall apart. When that happens, you've still got to pay E55 to replace it!

This way, we pay the money once, and that's it! :D

Meanwhile, he drives with his permit, and there's a copy of the pass cert in with it in case of a pull from the boys in blue!!

Apparently all applications submitted after Jan 12th will be processed on the 19th and issued as credit card licences

This is true. I checked on the website Saturday, after His Hubbiness passed.

I think currently a duplicate only costs €5, I wonder what it will cost when the new licenses come in

My Wife renewed her licence yesteday..Paid €25 for 10 years.....So no paying €55 for at least 10 years now.

No question of it falling apart either..Her old one was as in good a condition as it was when she first got it 7 years ago.

You do realise that just caus he has the pass cert doesn't make him a fully licensed driver right?

    E55.
55 for a duplicate also? I'm surprised, considering they don't currently charge the full price for a duplicate now. Do you have a link to this?

Er - Yes I do. He didn't drive unaccompanied when he was learning & does not now. Not until we get the licence. See here.

Strangely enough a girl in work showed me her Belgian license on Tuesday (Slightly newer style paper style than our Irish paper one) and it was perfect, 8 years old.

Mines 5 years old and its grand also.

If you don't treat it like a bit of toilet roll it'll be fine.

    EDIT ....

Hmm ... its going up by a fiver here also:

    http://www.eindhoven.nl/producten/Rijbewijs.htm

    2012:
normaal tarief (Normal Price) € 40,00
    spoedaanvraag (Express Service) € 73,50
bij vermissing of diefstal (Lost or Stolen) € 63,50

    2013:
normaal tarief (Normal Price) € 45,00
    spoedaanvraag (Express Service) € 80,00
bij vermissing of diefstal (Lost or Stolen) € 69,00

    Arrrggghhh !! :D

I don't treat my licence as toilet roll either. Bully for us!! But my husband being the male of the species has a funny habit of losing and dropping things! He's already washed the permit once as he was being helpful in putting on a wash.

We'll wait for the new one, ta.

I don't care what you do, just pointing out they don't fall apart if you don't treat them badly.

Féck sake ... whats next, Asbestos licenses for people that accidentally throw them in the fire :pac: ?

P.S. You hit the nail on the head, I've washed the clothes in the family before and people were always leaving tissues in their pockets !

I was in today getting a duplicate which cost €10. After Jan 19 he told me was 35 for the card.
No plans on allowing people to swap as of yet.

My poxy paper licence is in bits.
doesn't fit into a wallet properly, all creased and a bit torn and raggedy edges.
and still 4 years left before it needs replacing.

If you drive two cars regularly and your license doesn't spend its life in one glove box then it's my experience that they disintegrate well before their 10 years are up. It's what happens when you expect someone to do carry around piece of laminated paper for a decade...

My licence lives in my wallet which stays in my pocket all day so you'd think it would be in bits in no time but no so.
I renewed recently because it expired but both my previous ones lasted full term intact despite being in different wallets for 10 years. None were quite in pristine condition and had curled up edges and the plastic sleeve was ripped but the licence itself was otherwise fully intact. They outlasted 5 leather wallets.

Mine is like brand new and I got it 8 years ago. It is in the glovebox and rarely sees the light of day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

Going even further OT, but I cannot understand why people would leave a licence in the glovebox!! If the car's broken into, not only is there the inconvenience of replacing it, but also the risk of further crime (Burglary, ID theft, etc.) . Makes absolutely no sense whatsover...This seems to be a peculiarly Irish habit. I've never seen or heard this this in the UK, and nobody I know would be silly enough to do it.

To me, it's common sense. You wouldn't leave your birth or marriage cert in a car. So why a licence?? You DO NOT leave anything in a car that could identify you.

Mines grand anyway, swap between a work lease car, my own car and rental cars.

Its a valuable document, you should treat it as such. Mine spends its life in its Holder and when not in the car its in a bag.

I agree the Plastic Card if more rugged but the paper license lasts just fine as does your passport if you look after it (I carry that everywhere)

Mine expires on the 10 January... so I theory I get the privilege of paying the higher fees (from 1 January) and getting the poxy old licence (before 19th). I plan to wait until after the 19th before applying.
Does anybody know if the application form for the new licence is the same as the one they sent me for the old one (form 401)? Thanks.

I was told in motor tax office to better off wait, and no, you cannot pay 25 euro now or pay for 1 or 3 years. No matter card or paper it will be ****ing 55 euro for 10 years, so they told me better off have my learners permit and my cert that I passed driving test with me and that I can take L plates off easily as I have proof that I did and passed both.

what if you have the cert but lost licence before you got full licence, would they still issue one if you reported it missing?

Are those who wish to have their licence reflect a new address eligible to get the new card at this stage? I can't find a clear answer anywhere.

Duplicate Licence/Learner Permit  If your licence/learner permit is current but has been lost or stolen you may apply to your Motor Taxation Office for a duplicate by completing the relevant form (D 401) or (D201). A duplicate licence is issued to replace a valid licence that has been lost, stolen, destroyed or defaced. The duplicate will be a copy of the original licence/permit, including any endorsements, and will be valid for the same period. Your application should include: D401 Full Licence Application(PDF)  or D201 Learner Permit Application(PDF)  signed and stamped at your local Garda station Two passport photographs (signed on reverse) €35

    Free-in-lieu licence

Free-in-lieu licences are issued (provided your driving licence is current) in the following cases:
    Change of name/address
Removal of endorsement (on expiry of three-year endorsement period)
If an error has been made in the issue of the licence (eg, incorrect date of birth)
    Free same as before
But if you want a duplicate that doesn't involve one or the other items above been changed than you have to pay same as before

Yes, but it won't be free replacement anymore.

Depends on where you apply. Some process quickly others painfully slow.

I thought they were processed centrally now, or do you mean the some CoCos sit on the applications before sending them off?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 473 ✭✭ThreeLineWhip

The only thing that is centralised is the printing of the licences.

Biddy in the council is still entering details into the computer and is scanning your photos and signature. Once this is done it is sent to the printers who send out the card. The delay is not with them.
