Interesting to see who buys what assets now. EA would be mad to pass up the WWE licence.

Ya EA got the UFC license off them earlier this year. Delighted as well as EA made a much better mma, game than THQ. I'd say a few studios will want to pick up Saints Row as well.

Its far from over for them its chapter 11 bankruptcy and while serious it is a restructuring to try and save the company rather than have a fire sale and close it.

Most Likely studios that do not have a big game coming in the first 6 months of 2013 will be stripped. Any company that buys them up will still look to make some money from whats there especially on South Park, COH and Metro.

Homefront 2 is being developed by Crytek so im not sure what deal they have if its just the licence or what?

Just read about this on Kotaku.. there's a very concise explanation of whats happening from Jason Rubin, worth a read

thats a shame, I liked a lot of their games - will we see a darksiders 3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭Ravenid

Hmm.... does that mean Humble Bundle 6 was basically and ad for THQ saying "We made all this good stuff buys us?" that they got money for?

all because of u-draw right ?

as long as south park is ok

Can't say I was terribly impressed with Darksiders 2, but their Warhammer 40K output was brilliant. Hope anyone affected gets something better soon.

Kinda sad there has been no further mention of Dark Millenium Online, even after they said it wasnt going the full MMO route but more an online shooter angle. Which if was anything similar to a Battlefield model

Turns out the ones trying to buy THQ are Ubisoft, I am not happy about this.

Where does that come from? An article I saw earlier referenced an "Equity group."

Ubisoft is one of the front-runners in the bid to buy THQ's assets, MCV understands.

We have been told that the French firm is keen to take over the publisher's brands and studios once THQ works through its current financial problems.

    http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/thq-ip-to-be-sold-title-by-tile-ea-confirmed-as-interested-party/0108919

THQ's IPs are to be sold off at an auction on the 22nd. Creditors blocked its sale to Clearwater.

Article ignores all of THQ's other awesome IPs/Rights, like WH40k, Homeworld, etc

Or any of THQ's assets, particularly COH... Why won't EA just die? :(

I would much rather Ubisoft take over. Anybody but EA...

And as part of said Chapter 11 proceedings...

THQ to auction off Darksiders, Red Faction, Homeworld and more by May

Fingers crossed those titles find a good home. :o

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,276 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Red Faction i don't really care about, but Darksiders and Homeworld (especially Homeworld) deserve a good home. I'd give large sums of money for a new, properly made Homeworld sequel/reboot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,158 ✭✭✭Arawn

Do not let anyone **** up darksiders

if we get another red faction in the spirit of red faction 1 it'd be a truly fantastic thing. the sequels have all been ****ing awful.

I think a homeworld kickstarter would be a roaring success.

Are any big companies going down that route? It's a way to offset some of the risk in a risk-averse industry.

Praying Darksiders and Homeworld find good homes. Been a Homeworld fan for years and picked up Darksiders 1&2 over crhistams on steam and have really enjoyed them

    "Uber Entertainment".

Hadn't heard of them. Not really what I had in mind.

It just seems that, although the related costs are trivial for the Activisions and EA's of this world, it doesn't mean they're going to risk the money.

In the end of the day there never was a HW3 so clearly people didn't think it was worth pursuing, but it seems to have a fairly active cult following across the intertubes.

Kickstarter seems like a good way to actually boost game sales (although that's an empirical question that you'd have to actually test) because it gets people involved with the production process.
That sort of thing builds more momentum for a game, I think, than a developer quietly going about business.

Some games don't need that but just look at Star Citizen. I have no idea what it's about but it seemed to get a lot of traction off the back of having a good development team behind it.

So apparently Sega didn't buy WH40K:
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-03-15-games-workshop-licenses-warhammer-40k-to-slitherine
Maybe Sega didn't and won't acquire the Warhammer 40,000 licence after all, because Games Workshop has announced a W40K deal with someone else. That someone else is Slitherine, a developer and publisher of historical strategy games galore, most on PC, some on Mac and even fewer on iPad. The deal means Slitherine will make a W40K strategy game. Development is already under way on multiple platforms.

www.savehomeworld.com i think... or something like that - in work so cant check.

I think I heard about that on Weekend Confirmed or something but was left a bit cold with them being a bit unknown.

There's only 10 days to go and they're 35% short of their goal.

Not sure what I'd really want from a kickstarter - I don't know the industry well enough to know who'd make a good fist of the game (aside from obvious heavy hitter developers).

According to this article in PC Gamer Games Workshop aren't going to sell rights exclusively for WH40K.

Slitherine are going to be making a turn based WH40K game but that doesn't seem to automatically mean the end of the Dawn of War franchise.
What will the game be? We don’t really know yet – much of the details of the deal are being kept under wraps. All we know for sure is it’ll be a turn-based strategy, and that it’s being developed for multiple, as yet unnamed, platforms. Given Slitherine’s back-catalogue, this could mean the most faithful adaptation of tabletop Warhammer to date.

With Slitherine taking hold of the 40K license, what does that mean for the series’ previous custodians, Relic. Actually, not that much: in a statement to GamesIndustry, Games Workshop say they’re moving to a less exclusive licensing philosophy. “The days of monolithic Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 licenses on all platforms are behind us. In the future, games based on our properties will be platform and subject specic, which is great news as it means there are far more opportunities than before.”

More War for everyone then. In addition to whatever Slitherine are working on, we also know Creative Assembly are creatively assembling something in the trad-fantasy Warhammer setting.

    Thats great news.

Slitherine do some fantastic strategy games.

If they do a decent stab at the 40k tabletop in a turnbased PC game I'll be a happy Imperial Guardsmen

    Edit: from the Slitherine website
Slitherine links with Games Workshop® on new licensing agreement

World leader of tabletop wargaming joins forces with strategy video gaming expert

Slitherine (www.slitherine.com) and Games Workshop (www.games-workshop.com), two giants in their respective specialist markets, have signed a deal to produce a strategy video game set in the popular Warhammer® 40,000® universe.

"This deal represents yet another testament to our continuous aim to reach new audiences, without losing sight of who we are and what we do best", said JD McNeil, Chairman of the Slitherine Group. "It's all about creating strategy games that are targeted to a particular audience and addressing a very specific need in the market. The Warhammer 40,000 setting is a perfect fit for the style of strategy games that we make and will be very popular with fantasy and science fiction fans alike. Joining forces with Games Workshop will allow us to bring an wonderfully deep and appropriate IP to the Turn Based Strategy genre”.

Details of the deal including the content and features of the game have not yet been announced, but development is already underway on multiple platforms, involving the best talents in design and development available to the Slitherine Group.

Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing at Games Workshop said: “Slitherine are clearly established and successful masters of their genre of games, and there are many fans of their work here at GW. It’s a pleasure to work with such like minded individuals who share our passion for strategy games of all types”.

Well thats kinda good news that its on a case by case basis. While Slitherine might make a good strategy game, I am still holding out hope for some more games similar to Space Marine, either FPS/TPS or even an RPG or two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,761 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

    I really enjoyed Spacemarine

For a game that got less than 30 hours of my Attention, SM was dope. To-the-point action that satisfied your pants off with jetpacks and hammers and giant building-sized things making things go BOOM.

Any game you want, put it on your wishlist and Steam sends you email alerts when the price drops or goes on sale

looks like the homeworld ip maybe purchased as the Save homeworld kickstarter reached its goals to purchase the ip

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

Save Homeworld campaign fails to secure the rights to the space RTS series

I'd be lying if I said I thought they ever had a chance with what they had raised. On the other hand, should be interesting to see who did buy it.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,276 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I'm kind of glad they didn't get it, as i don't want a mobile version of Homeworld, i want Homeworld 3.

Will have to see who did get it though...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,775 ✭✭✭✭Gbear

Presumably it being bought means that someone is actually going to make it then?

I can't imagine they buy the rights and then just sit on them...
