I got chugged on the bus yesterday

On the way home yesterday sitting minding my own business on a dublin bus, a chugger got on and sat down beside me, my phone rang and i started to have a chat, two minutes into the conversation i got a tap on the shoulder from the chugger and he started to give me 'the talk', now it pissed me off but i didnt make a big deal about it, i've had no change and told him so...

so then he got up and started asking everyone on the bus, people with earphones were not immune to this guy, he was quite persistent. Anybody that was unlucky enough to have a seat to themself were cornered and despite being told no he rambled on about the good work that was being done...

my telephone conversation ended and he returned to me, now i was getting pissed off now, i told him i still have no change!!

Anyways he got a dressing down off some guy who got on, apparently his clip board wasn't stamped (whatever that means) and the guy started to lose it with him for approaching him on the bus anyways which didnt stop him with everyone else, he did get some contributions which seemed to be achieved out of peoples awkwardness of being cornered on a quiet bus full of people...

i dont mind chuggers in general, no i dont want to listen and walk on but being cornered on a bus and being embarrassed in front of everyone, as people listen to the conversation, is a step too far i think

Are they allowed do this? What next, chugging in fast food places, pubs or public toilets?

TL;DR version - got chugged on a bus and didnt like it

You should have leered at him seductively while farting loudly.

that would infuriate me! not only did he interrupt your phone call but he did it to ask for money?!?

    what a wankstain

    I dislike the term "Chugger"

"Cúnt" is a much more appropriate word

He isn't allowed to collect money on a Dublin bus, you should have told the driver. It's inappropriate and rude

I'm pretty sure they can't collect on a bus.

I'd have told him **** right off kindly leave me alone as I am busy listening to podcasts of people talking about nerdy things I enjoy.

Tell him no once, if he continues at that stage he is harrassing you. I'd point out him that he's harassing you and if he doesn't shut up you'll have him f**ked off the bus.

I've found the more creative you are when they stop you on the street the better, "Hi, How are you?", "I'm grand but the rash on my balls is killing me, you wouldn't mind having a look at it for me?" etc. The best line I ever heard was a mate got stopped by someone collecting for childline, he shouted back "You never did anythign for me when my unlce raped me", kinda harsh but it shut them up.

You should have whipped your knob out and started to masturbate wildly....that would have embarrassed him into leaving you alone...

I wear a green high vis vest and carry a clipboard at all times. chuggers don't try to feed on each other. I got this idea from an episode of The Walking Dead.

this motherfúcker would have finished me off for a fiver, seriously this guy was the king chugger...

people who pointed to the earphones, he started talking really loudly saying this will only take a few minutes of your time, the poor girl he did it too got more embarrassed than the rest of us, she handed over two euro to get him to fcuk off, even the guy that started to go nuts got, 'so are you sure you dont want to make a donation' :pac: i almost most admired the cheeky git after that

If you know what charity he was allegedly collecting for, contact them and make a complaint. I doubt they expect them or want them to collect on a bus. By the way, was he shaking a bucket at you for cash or collecting bank details on a clipboards for donations?!

clipboard but was cash donations which seemed a little odd to me tbh

i really admire the charity he was collecting for though (idk if i should mention here), if it had of been a bucket at the side of a public street i definately would have put some money in but on a bus having to explain you've no money on you in front of people or interepting a phone call is wrong imo...

idk if i should complain, i'm sure this isn't the norm though??

Whenever I go over to Geordieland for the football I usually open my arms wide as if to give them a hug whenever I see then aiming for me. If that doesn't put them off I shout loudly in my broadest Donegal accent

'Man dear, you're a lovely looking wee cuttie/fella aren't you?'

I'm usually drunk at the time, which also helps.

It sounds unusual to say the least. A quick email/phone call to the charity involved should clear up whether it is legit or not though.

According to my mate, who I mock frequently for chugging for concern as a summer job, chuggers are not allowed to:

Continue pitching once they've been refused.
Follow you in the street to get your attention.
Pitch in a non-public space (The interior of a bus is not a public space, it is privately owned by the bus company).
Or do a lot of the things it's common to see chuggers doing.

Because it violates various harrassment or tresspass laws, and their certs are generally for a specific area within specific hours.

The problem is that the majority of chuggers don't work for the charities they're collecting for, they work for private companies the charities pay for their services and those private companies are ruthless about firing unproductive staff, and nonchalant about the reputation of the charity they are working for. (The concern ones are apparently an exception to this, hired directly by the charity.)

So lots of chuggers are encouraged to be obnoxious horrible fecks.

I was on the train last week and there was this girl and her mother, clearly from the traveling community, going up and down the train looking for money for charity. The girl about 7 had a vest on for disabled children and an official looking box collecting money. When one woman questioned the validity of it, the mother went on a foul mouthed rampage! People actually gave money to them! Couldn't believe it!

i know the charity/organisation he was collecting for, a previous poster has pointed out that that they can be contracted in from private companies so idk for sure

i may make a call as i'd hate to think this guy just done up some forms on a computer, would be extremely cheeky but also dumb if the buses cctv was working correctly, regardless i think its clear from another poster that he shouldn't be doing this anyways

Until i got to the bottom of the first page i didn't know what you all were talking about. I never heard the term chugger used for someone collecting money before. Now that thats cleared up, i hate them.

(CIE group) Company bye law states....

I had a fecken SightSavers chugger call to my front door recently.

It's a pity Ireland doesn't have the laws against "cold calling" that the UK has.

I usually find a smile and a very firm "No thank you" shoots them down straight away. The day one of them pesters me or starts it on the bus is the day I try something else.

I've noticed they tend to work in pairs though. Like snipers. I think I'd prefer a pair of snipers on the street to be honest.

i've emailed the chairty, they have a feedback on their website. My main concern is that he was genuinely collecting for the charity.

If he turns out to be an over enthusicatic volunteer, I hope he just gets a brush up with the dos and don'ts of chugging.

Serious question here - what stops the chuggers from pocketing the donations? There doesn't seem to be any paper trail that I can see.

Most chuggers aren't looking for cash but trying to get you to give them your bank details so they can sign you up for a standing order donation.

Any chugger I have been unlucky enough to meet has only wanted bank details but the OP mentioned that he said he didn't have any change so that's what made me think this guy could be on the make.

I'd say he was chancing his arm. There's no way a real charity would ask anyone to collect money on a bus, certainly not in the manner described.

They're an absolute pain in the arse, and the ones who go around the pubs are worse. Was in the pub before the Leinster match at the weekend and this woman came up selling scratchcards to raise money for recovering alcoholics (irony?). Said 'no, we're grand, thanks'. and then she starts going on about all the great work they do. Said 'no' again and then she starts telling us they're only €2 each. After the 4th time telling her, she finally pissed off, giving dirty looks on the way.
