Gym or MMA - Shape for Summer

    I have a dilemma,
I am looking forward to summer holidays and I want to be in the best possible shape as fast as its possible.
Right now I have a membership in gym, but I was thinking about swapping it to MMA.

My main target is to loss the fat from the stomach (I don't have too much of it though:)), Get toned, Gain bigger muscles, and gain as much weight as its possible without getting fat (keeping it quite toned).

I have about 6 months to do it, and I wonder what is the best way to achieve it?

There are pros and cons for gym and mma, but I don't know the fitness topic well enough to tell which is more effective for this target.

I know that MMA would be really good for cardio, loosing weight, and getting toned muscles. But what about gaining weight and getting bigger muscles?

I really need an advice. And any information that you think would help me are really appreciated.

(Thread also added to MMA section)

I am sorry but there is not exact answer to your question. It all depends on the training program you are joining. I would suggest asking the mma training and I think he will be the right person to answer your question

Tbh, nothing beats weight lifting when it come to gaining a decent amount of muscle mass

Can you not do both? incorporate the MMA into your Gym schedule.

I will try to narrow my question.

Target - From 73kg to as close as 80kg, Good athletic shape, Low Fat %.
Dead Line - Summer (6 months from now)
Question - What is the best training to achieve this?

Lift weights, get stronger and eat to support your goal.

Neither mma or GAA provide that.

lol where did the GAA come from

If you want to learn how to fight, train MMA.

If you want to get bigger muscles and improve body composition, lift weights.

    Pretty straight forward!

Is there any place I could get a 6month plan online. General put up a much muscle as possible all round and then cut it back

    thanks, Tom

Why can't you just get exercise and cardio at the gym and at the same time lift weights?

MMA is targeting learning how to fight, gym is targeted more towards what you were mentioning.

I think that I will stick to the Gym and get a new program.
Involving 1 Day Cardio and 1 Day weights.

Can someone give me few diet tips?

Well eat often, every 2-3hours. They say 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. Keep your protein high, eat the required amount of carbs and fats low- well don't eat bad fats.

In the MMA forum you said that you wanted to cut fat, so I said there don't be much difference in the two in terms of energy, fitness etc. Diet is key above all else.

Here you mention bulking to 80kg. Weights is far better option so.
Weights and food. Lots of food.

Have a look at bodybuilding.com for a new program for you, I wouldn't recommend a gym worker giving you a workout plan. In order to gain weight you need a calorie surplus. 6 month is a lot of time to gain some muscle for the summer.

You will probably be looking at around 150-160g of protein per day.

Have you looked into a Creatine supplement?

No need to eat every 2-3 hours at all. Eat when it's suitable and available.

Why low fats? And what's a bad fat?

Nobody's ever gotten bigger from MMA training, indeed I found it impossible to grow when doing it. although I'd strongly recommend everyone with a bit of fight in them to try it out and it probably would help fat loss, getting punched kicked and choked seems a roundabout way to do it.

How do you make that out? Everyone knows its better to eat a lot throughout the day instead of 3 massive meals.

Too many fats make you fat, that's pretty simple. Bad fats are those that are saturated.

Yeah both of those are wrong tbh.

    Explain?

    Person 1 eats 2,000kcal over 3 meals

    Person 2 eats 2,000kcal over 8 meals

Both eat same macro split. What's the difference?

And too many kcals make you fat. Most ppl over eat carbs, not fat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,624 ✭✭✭double GG

    Explain?

Technically I could eat 250g of fat everyday by downing some olive oil and eat nothing else and still lose weight. Not saying it's healthy but you get the point. Too many calories is the cause of weight gain not over consumption of fat.

Fat is when you think about it a bad name!

    Dietary fat =/= Adipose Tissue.

Saturates have been given a bad name by a couple of 'Big' well published poor studies. Have a quick google and you will see more info on it.

Also, Higher fat intakes may increase testosterone levels in Males.

    spot o.

tbh I thuink you should only do MMA is you want to learn the skill.
Fitness will be not the foremost of what you do in MMA - granted it#'s a decent piece but the skillset is the main focus.
If you want to fight then MMA.

If you want to look decent as the primary goal then gym/diet yourself.

So why do the majority of weight lifters and body builders eat up on 7-8 meals per day if they get the same macro split?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Because top bodybuilders are taking in massive amounts of calories daily. Maybe 8000kcal. The sheer quantity of food means it's just physically easier to eat that amount over 8 meals.

Recreational guys do it because they read it in a magazine or on a forum. And because hey thinks there's some metabolic advantage. There isn't.

There are advantages for some people like diet adherence. But that's a different story.

Some of the thinking in this discussion seems to be based on a belief that the body has a finite time window for extracting nutrients from food.

The thinking seems to be that the digestive system is something like a conveyor belt running through an assembly line with a fixed capacity.

So if the assembly line has the capacity to produce a maximum of 10 finished products in an hour and you load it with enough components to make 20 products, then half the components will fall off the line at some point in the process and end up getting wasted.

I'm no expert, and I'm not even a well informed layman, but this idea just doesn't seem very logical. Why would the mammalian body have evolved to work this way when feast or famine is the reality that it has adapted to?

If this were true, then wouldn't it also apply to alcohol? It is certainly not possible to drink a bottle of whiskey in an hour and only feel the effects of a glass or two.

This post is intended as a question, by the way. I'm not trying to claim to be right.

You take your logic and go to the logic forum with it. We deal with rhetoric and Internet fables here!!!! :D

That is fine...if you've learned anything from boards...and lets face it...who of us hasn't...it should be that whenever you see an argument here on boards you should always side with me...because no matter how bad it looks at the beginning...no matter how many people are stacked up against me...we all know....in the end...I am always right....LOL.

As for the rest of your points...yeah, what Hanley said :)
