Golfing Goals for 2013

I put up a blog 'The 12 Months of Christmas' which is a list of monthly goals/suggestions for next year.

These aren't specific handicap goals but cover other stuff too, like courses to visit, things to do and try.

Who's got what objectives for next year?

Would anyone be interested in going to Royal County Down in February, for £50 (weekdays)? You play off fairways.

Going to play the European 4ball match play starting in Jan great value if you can get thru a couple of rounds.
    St. Andrews in April.
Atlantic Challenge in July also penciled in.
Also want to tick off at least 3 links courses i haven't played.
Have been to RCD the last 2 years in Feb its a great deal you just have to pick your Day.
So 9 months to plan for.

That my little lad will be kind on me and allow me to at least dream of that great game I once had at Druids Heath, instead of waking me up with incessant crying. That, unfortunately, is the sum of my golfing ambitions.

Nice update Kevin! Please keep us posted on the trip to RCD. Would be two of us interested.

Golfing goals for 2013 are to hit more fairways (keep the ball in play).

Had a lesson mid November and was given 2 major things to work on, I didn't stand parallel to my intended ball path and I have to start the downswing with a hip move ( I always started by breaking the wrists to early).

Hopefully lower scores on the way.

Just took up membership on a links course, so although it early days, my objective will be to play to my 15 handicap first, then get down to 12 by the end of the summer.
I scored 32-35 on my first two times out on the links, but both rounds were with no wind, so much easier.
I also plan to play one round every week, hail, rain or shine in 2013.

My aim is to get over to play Carne, Rosses Point and Enniscrone but Carne is the one I really want to play.
Aims for 2013 is simply to keep on enjoying my golf.

I'd love to give RCD a bash! I work shifts so always have a few days off during the week. The ambition this year was to get down to 2 from 4 but work and an enforced change of club mid season got in the way so I ended up drifting out to 5 (4.9). Working hard on the range and in the gym for the winter so hopefully I'llhit the ground running for the start of next season.

Nothing specific, just play more in general if we get the weather, all I'd really like to improve game wise is my hips/pivot, I'm way too much "arms" at the minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 737 ✭✭✭fearruanua

Single figures!!! I won the last club comp i played but it was non qualifying due to placing everywhere. that would have brought me to 9.4. which was goal for 2012.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,510 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

    Jan-Feb
    Join club and get HC
Finish the remaining 2 (of 4) winter lessons

    March-May
Short game, short game, short game

    June-Dec
World domination (or a nice little reduction in HC)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 130 ✭✭gigawatt2007

1 - Pull the funds together to keep the membership
    2 - Get down to 6

Am at 8.5 at the moment and have had 41, 42 and 39 points in Winter medals in the last month which would have seen me in with a shout.

Fingers crossed I can keep up the good form in the New Year.

    Get to 5 (currently 6).
    Work on putting.
    Play ... a lot!
Have a good Junior Cup run with the club.

    1. Get Putting Average Down
    2. More Up & Downs
    3. Improve Course Management

all of which should contribute to...

    4. Get to single figures (at 13 now, hoping to get to 12 when the handicap sec reviews for the year as have had a pretty decent end of season, but can't bank on that one)

oh & 5. Follow that ba$tard FixDePitchmark down into the sub 80 club ;)

    1. Get Putting Average Down
    2. More Up & Downs
    3. Improve Course Management

These are two of my key goals. My putting is just rubbish, not good or consistent enough for a single figure golfer and my chipping, while improving significantly towards the end of the year, needs to be much better. I really need to regularly score around or below 30 putts per round.

The biggest goal for me is to get rid of my hook. I've basically had it for the last 18 months and on my home course it destroys me because, although I'm hitting irons off most of the tees, I'm still hooking the ball 30 - 40 yards left, usually into water or trees. I've lined up a series of hour long golf lessons with a reputable pro here and I'm hoping he'll spot the problem and set me on the right track. If I can get that solved, I can really focus on the things above.

    So, in order,
    1. Get rid of hook
    2. Improve my putting
    3. Improve my up & downs

    1) Join a club again. I was thinking of just getting a distance membership but I really want to get back into club team so will probably get full membership. Went very close to the Bruen All Ireland a couple of years ago but the whole team collapsed and left the club because of the cliques.

    2) I had no club this year but I have done wholesale changes in the range and whenever I get the very odd casual round I have been very consistent. Ball striking has improved 3 fold

    3) Handicap down from 10 to 7

    4) 50% of fairways. I don't need more length, just accuracy. The new r11 hopefully will help!

5)Short game will come back when I play more..not worried about that

January - Complete the changes to my swing for my long game
February/March - really work on my short game, 100 yards and in so I can be ready to bring my golf game to the next level.
    April/May - get back to 4
    June/July - get down to 3
August/September - Finish the year no worse than 2.4
October - Represent Boards.ie once again and retain the Ryder Jug!
November/December - Get myself ready for 2014 where I try and get down to scratch ;)

    You gotta have ambition! :D

    1. Get driving sort (stick to one driver, get a lesson & pound the range)
    2. Groove a reliable putting stroke
    3. Get to 5 (6.7 currently)
    4. Get on the Junior Cup panal
    5. Win one 'major'- Capitan's, Club strokeplay etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

[*]Play more top 100 courses in Ireland, get over 50 on list.
      [*]Improve a little , shoot a 77 or less.
[*]Retain my society Golfer of the Year (very hard as will be cut to single figures, 8 or 9)
[*]Decide what to do about joining or not.
      [*]Spend less time on boards.
      [*]Go on a boards outing.
      [*]Get rid of Hook.
      [*]Get a bit fitter.
      [*]Go to Irish Open.
[*]Play abroad again – plan a trip to British Open, but 2015 most likely (St. Andrews).
      [*]Improve short game.
[*]Watch less golf on Sky , particularly 3rd and 4th tier events.
      [*]Spend less money on golf.
A bit less of everything, but most of mine are contradictions.

Get fit early in the new year and try to get to +1. Currently of +.03 so want to consolidate that and play in a few majors next year

Have a young family so not getting out to practice as much as I need to maintain the handicap.

Fair play; that is some handicap especially if you don't get to practice much.

What is your definition of a 'major'?

    • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 935 ✭✭✭pinkdoubleeagle

Thanks. Majors would be the West/North etc. Cut off for the past few years have been ridiculous so hopefully will get in a few next year

That is one of the many great things I love about this game. Everyone at every level has a competition they can call a 'major' from the the Masters right through to the monthly medal.

      Get down to single figures.
Play on a couple of the club teams (Barton cup would be great if anyone in the low figures could put up with me)
Play a couple more of the top 100 courses
      Go to the Irish Open
Play golf in a pair of shorts with the sun shining!!!!!!!!!!!!

Playing off 12 but due to not getting out I'm averaging about 14-15 over. Huge task but feel I know I can do it.

All I need is a plan and a bucket-load of brownie points :D

To play better on holes 12, 13 & 14. I've an awful problem with these holes no matter what the course is. Nearly every round I've played this year has been going well until hole 12. I usually pick up 1-2 points then from those 3 holes and finish the round with 33/34 points. I know that's still good but it can be so much better! I'm only playing society golf off of 18 and haven't managed to get to any opens yet. But If I could get better at those 3 holes I'd be flying. I just loose concentration and get all loose by the 12th hole, fall apart for 3, then get it back together again for the finish.

Also, shooting below 85 would be nice (usually around 91/92)

I do a thing called "Super 6" with my round where the round is broken into chunks of 6 x 3 holes. Find its a good way of not letting a bad couple holes get to me. The aim is that every 3 holes, you reset and start again, so how you are performing on previous holes doesn't impact the way you perform on upcoming holes.

I find it very helpful for stopping you thinking about your overall score and just concentrating on the next couple of holes.

Might be helpful way of thinking of things?

Come back from injury. Was badly injured in work in mid April which cost me my whole season.

Fitness not an issue. Shouldn't be anyway. I play enough hurling to keep myself fit. I was thinking about it over the weekend and I'm thinking it may be related to slow play. I like to play quickly, I don't hang around over shots but some of the lads I play with are dreadfully slow. I think around the 12th hole mark I'm bored (for want of a better word) and try a shot i really shouldn't be taking on to keep myself entertained and get in trouble as a result. I do that for a few holes and then cop on that I can't make those shots even if it is fun to try.

That's a pretty weak excuse reading back on it :)

although - with all the recent additions to the list it might be getting a lot tougher. Making top 10 could be a goal for me aswell soon enough ;)

Improving fitness is my first goal. A mate is a fitness instructor so going to get a program from him and hit a gym maybe 3 times a week.

By the summer should have a few extra yards hopefully but more importantly feel better on the course.

Going to work extra hard on short game, putting is pretty good but pitching and bunker play need improving.

Tighten up long game a little hopefully, driving is not good enough at the moment.

And finally get on jimmy bruen and junior cup teams in my club. You cant beat the feeling of matchplay.

I started last spring and hc of 24 ! I joined roganstown this year and love it, even though it is very tough !

1 st goal is play to my hc ! 36 pts !

Played 22-31 pts at the moment, I need to leave my 5 wood at home and use 6 iron or hybrid 20.5 for my second shot !

Big Picture - To get down from 16.3 to 13.4. It's possibly overly ambitious since I'll probably only get to play in a dozen singles competitions again (both in terms of getting to 13 and playing like I should be off 13).

The Detail - Improve my putting somehow. After every round I count where I gave away silly shots and there's always at least 4 on the greens. After that, a couple of wayward drives can ruin my round and my pitching / chipping isn't too great either.

    • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 497 ✭✭castle

Are you sure you playing of the right handicap, the amount of players I know that are around 4 if not more points of their handicap when playing stableford which is easier than than strokes, I still some people hold onto handicaps that are not really real,

Are you hungry at this stage of the game, when do you eat during the round are you taking enough water on board as you might be mentally tired? you need to try some new, like take glove off/put on for these holes, eat just before the 12th etc, just to give you a different mental state, works trust me
