Motor tax gone up already?

So I got my motor tax renewal form and to my surprise the price seems to have gone up.

It's for a 1896cc, which I last taxed in October for 3 Months. It cost me €176 then (or 626 per year)

My renewal notice is now quoting me €190 for the next 3 months (or 673 per year)

I realise they announced motor tax increases in the budget but I thought they only come into effect as of next year?

    Can anyone please clarify?

Renewal form is for next month, then the price is right since you have it taxed till end of December/January i guess.

I presume your renewal is from January so that is the new year.

I know its too late now but you should have renewed before the Budget.

Yeah the car is currently Taxed 12-12 so the rate which ive been quoted is infact budget 2013 rate then...

Thanks for your smug reply Corktina, I would have thought that since my tax effectively expires at the end of THIS year and I'll also be renewing it THIS year I could still do so under pre-budget rates.

Makes sense though i suppose, still a F%&*ing rip-off though

    Thanks

Likewise, I got my renewal for the Mazda which is up the end of December, but because the new tax period begins in January, it's under the new pricing.

Your renewal date is 1/1/13 and you are getting a reminder letter now so the new rates applied are unfortunately the correct rates. It's all relative now but a note for next yeas is that you could have requested a pin a few days before the budget and renewed online at the old rates rather than wait for the reminder letter in the post two weeks before the renewal date.

You can tax it in advance, at old rates. I've done so in the past. The key is to tax it before January 1.

So if the OP taxes the car today they'll get the old rates despite the new rates being on the renewal notice? Doubt that tbh.

Don't think so. You can tax in advance the month before it is due alright but in December the old rates only apply prior to the rises being announced on Budget day, once you apply for a PIN online. This is why they tend to delay sending out the renewal reminder letter in December until after the budget.

My tax was up 13th December 2012 and I taxed it last week and they made me pay the new rate. I reckon it's a sly move by them.

Surely that's because the new rate comes into effect on 1st January so car tax that was due to be renewed in December would be at the old rate and tax to be renewed in January would be at the new rate.

BTW , how can car tax be up on 13th of the month ??

It says 13th dec on the old disc, and the renewal form said I had until 20th to renew, so they must give you a week to do it from whe it falls due.

Yeah I wish it was the old rate but what can ya do?

    Are you sure?

Insurance disks state a date to the day, tax disks state e.g. 12/13 not 13/12/13

Neither of our two do anyway

    Look at this picture:

    tax_disc.jpg

The text in the bottom half of the disc, what does it say?? a date in dd/mm/yy

I'd have to check what mine said but it must say 13/12/11

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,871 ✭✭✭Karen23

My tax discs have never stated a date just the month and year for example your current tax disc will expire on the last day if December 2012 and your new disc will commence on the first day of January 2013.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,119 ✭✭✭Tails142

yeah karen you have it right apologies. The date in small must be the date you buy the disc.

Well that explains why I got charged the new rate, my old disc did up until the end of december.

Interesting, I suspect that's the date it was actually renewed, and is nothing to do with when it expires, as motor tax runs to the end of the month in which it expires.

The important one is the 01/12 meaning the tax expires at the end of 01/12

That is not how it works, the date in big writing at the top is the expiry date. Motor tax alwasy expires at the end of the month, ie the 31st Jan 2012 as per photo above.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this thread. It really is very simple. If you renewed your tax before the budget was announced, you pay the old rate. The new rate was applicable on the evening of budget day

My tax was up at 31/12/2012, but I renewed the day before the budget so I got the old rate

As bazz26 said, you can request a pin online at motortax.ie, they email it to you in seconds so you can tax the car online straight away

See unkel, this is what's weird. My tax expired end Oct, but the car has been off the road since, I went online tonight to check what the rate would be if I renewed online this week and it's giving me the old rates of 186 for three months!

That is weird. Maybe it is to do with arrears? Once your tax is out by more than a month, you have to pay arrears.

Your disc would be for month start Dec, thus old rate :)
My tax expired in Nov, taxed it over the weekend, old rate :)

How far in advance of your expiry can you request a pin online? Presumably you can only do it in the month when you would be receiving your renewal anyway?

I thankfully availed of this too. I know that if I left it go, I'd end up just doing every 3 months again next year, so 4 x €200 would have been €800 for the year for me. So essentially made a saving of €140 by doing it pre-budget. It's all relative though, it's a pain forking that much out up front now, especially as my insurance is up on Jan 3rd for €675, but long term will be worth it.

    Kerb Weight - 1400KG
    Volvo V50 2.0 Petrol - Noord Brabant.

    Tax Per Quarter: € 180,00

    Its not about saving anything.

Why not just pay your phone subscription all in one go in that case ?
Or your ESB and Gas too .. sure it would save you money, in case the prices go up during the year.
