I'm trying to get RTE Playing going on openelec or raspbmc (distros of XMBC). I have tried the vodie plugin for xmbc but it doesn't seem to like the raspberry PI distros. Does anybody have any ideas on if its possible ?

I tried it today on Openelec ... installed the zip but it does not work unfortunately :(
    Error
    Script failed!: plugin.video.vodie

Seems to not be only a Pi issue ....

    plugin.video.vodie-1.1.3.zip

    from

That's a really old version, the guy stopped working on it.

There was a fork by liamf which worked well up until recently and witnessmenow was talking about doing another fork from that and fix a few things.

I don't know what the current state is.

I found a liamf patched master, but have not tried it.

Thanks for the info .... if witnessmenow does something for this you might post about it, thanks. ;)

yep, sorry lads, very little time to work on this at the moment, my recreational tech time is devoted to a different area these days.

I do actually have a Raspberry Pi, mind you, although I have not fired it up yet.

When XBMC Frodo is stable if nobody has picked up the baton I may well have another go.

Or try to get some of the kids from my CoderDojo to take an interest ... which would be a better all round solution.

I did actually look into AerTV on VODie latest, the other day, and come to the conclusion that I have no idea how to fix it. They have a new method of obscuring their URLs these days ...

    Hi Liam,

As I am outside Ireland but I can use RTE Player OK for certain shows.

The VODie fork 1.1.13h works for RTE playback on XBMC (Eden) but only certain shows show up. I can watch the Republic of Telly for instance fine on the laptop, but it is missing as a show on VODie.

Any ideas why a different list of shows is available under the VODie menus?

Radio is a disaster (crash and freeze - working keeps spinning but never recovers)

Cheers for a working (in part) version anyway!! Fair play.

Thats no problem !! Your providing a fantastic service. I have to say im really impressed by the xmbc distros on rPI and there video playback. If streaming (netflix, rte, 4od)could be perfected it would be a brilliant media player.

What are the issues ? I imagine they are relatively complex for an eijit like myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭liamf

Plugin currently cannot determine, for AerTV streams, what teh URL of the video streams is to pass to the player.

I have not looked into the RTE plugin to see what the issues with it are.

Although my household is a heavy used of XBMC (v11), we don't us the VODie plugin at all ... so I only look at it if someone asks me to, and even then only if I have time, which these days I generally don't ...

So I did some tinkering around with VODie and managed to get RTE player going on OPENElec, but it does not have all shows unfortunately. Shortly after this I found a plugin by Mossy that does work ! You can find it at this URL . Only catch is its quite slow to load the lists, and its just RTE player.

Trying installing plugin.video.4od-1.8.3.zip from the same site, I -think- it shares some of the code in the defunct 4od plugin.

How is that done since the demise of vodie ? I have an ATV2 and would love irish stations on it again

Had a look at this last night and have uploaded a pull request to Liam's VODieR github repository to fix the free Irish channels (RTE1, RTE2, RTE2HD, TV3, TG4, 3E).

Hopefully Liam will get some time to incorporate it in the next week or so.

    Cheers!

I HAVE A WORKING FUCKING ADD-ON ON MY APPLE TV AND I CAN'T GET THE FUCKING THING OFF!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭liamf

nickhx's fixes added to 1.1.3m version on github here
    https://github.com/liamf/VODieR

    A quick check suggests:

    AerTV works for free channels
    RTE catchup works
    TV3 catchup works

Note there there is another activity over on the xbmc forums to re-write this completely, with an XBMC coder who goes by the handle of doctormo

He's done RTE catchup in a very nice way, but none of the other stuff yet.
He will do it on a donation basis.

Might be worth thinking about if enough people care about this functionality to want to keep it running. With the best will in the world I have very, very limited time for this these days, my tech hobbies are taken up with CoderDojo.

    Kind Regards
    Liam

how would i go about installing this on xbmc? would like to test it out!

have installed repositorys from zip before, but when i download as a zip from github i get a message saying the "addon doesn't have the correct structure".

    any ideas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭liamf

if you download a .zip from github, it will have directory structure

    VODieR-1.1.3m\
    VODieR-1.1.3m\plugin.video.vodie\
    VODieR-1.1.3m\plugin.video.vodie\resources

    etc

    * extract it all to someplace
    * take the plugin.video.vodie directory and all contents and subdirs and drop into your XBMC addons directory
    * restart XBMC
    * you're done

thanks for that liamf, i had been zipping the plugin.video.vodie directory and trying to install it that way.

FTPed into the ATV and managed to get the plugin installed but get a script error in xbmc when trying to run it. running atv1 with crystalbuntu here, so not sure if its something i've done wrong, or if its not compatible with crystalbuntu and atv1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭liamf

Not familiar with ATV and how that works.

Can you install other plugins from the standard repos?

If you can, install the TWiT plugin from the standard repos and see if that works, and if it does, if having that installed makes VODie work too.

There is something about dependencies I seem to recall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭spongerobinson

can confirm it works on AppleTV 1 with Crystalbuntu, after installing the TWiT plugin also! Not sure why, but it works!!

If there is anything I can do to help with further development, or if anyone needs a hand getting the plugin installed and working on ATV with Crystalbuntu, just let me know!

    Cheers liamf!

New version works like a charm, thanks once again, my brother will be delighted with this as hes been bouncing between vodie and mossys app (which is a bit slow). doctormo got banned off the XBMC forums it seems, I have nothing against a coder earning a crust but he did seem to have an attitude and asking for a donation before release goes against the opensource grain imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭liamf

Installing TWiT from the official repos probably pulls in dependencies like BeautifulSoup and such, which are not distributed with VODie.
    Cheers liamf!

In fairness it was the combination of URLs from the doctormo code, plus the pull request from nickhx. Nothing to do with me this time boss.

Banning doctormo seems harsh. He is a very capable dude and he did make the RTE catchup available, for free. And he did a nice job on it too. Very good investigative skills to figure out how that worked.

In about 3 months time when something changes on one of these sites again and I am out of the country or swamped in other stuff, I have a feeling that people are going to regret the banning ...

Not really. XBMC forum has rules the same as this or any other one. One of their rules is no solicitation of goods or services.

    Please help.

I've been using vodie for about a year and love it when it works! The last zip I downloaded ended in a 'g' I think. Anyway really excited about fix but... When i use link above I can't see any zip files. I can't see the new one or the old ones. All I see is a directory and when i click it i just get subdirectories.

What do I need to do?

    Go to https://github.com/liamf/VODieR
    Click on Tags
This gives you a list of all the tagged revisions (== releases)
Find the 1.1.3m one - for some reason, tags are not in date order.
    Download the .ZIP
    Proceed as normal ...

Actually, while I'm here, I used FileZilla to get the Vodie folder into the addons folder in xbmc on my openelec machine. Can FileZilla also be used to get at the files one needs to change sometimes like the key maps and a sound.conf or whatever it's called etc. ie. instead of using ssh. The descriptions of that scare me:D

OpenElec shares most of this stuff via SMB by default. A Windows machine with network sharing enabled will pick up the OpenElec box and you can access and edit all these files.

Mossy's repo has an alternative IrishTV addon.
