Relative importance of nurition on the novice to elite spectrum

    Interesting thought that popped into my head (at least I think so anyway).
    We've heard the adage that, for beginners to general training at least, that their results will be driven 80% by their nutrition and 20% by exercise. Granted, the goal for most novices will be inproved body composition, but is there an arguement as someone moves along the spectrum from novice trainee to elite (in their chosen area), that nutrition becomes less important and the actual physical training moreso?

    Examples would include the so-called "dirty bulk" in bodybuilding, or Michael Phelps' diet for his training that apparently included a large amount of his calories coming from sandwiches. Are these examples appropriate do you think or in fact necessary compromises in nutrition to achieve the desired end results?

    Would there be some sort of compromise in health/wellbeing required in order to improve actual performance in terms of diet?
