Replacing lost driving license - conflicting information

I need to replace my lost driving license, but I'm getting conflicting information.

The Citizens Information and Dublin City websites say that I need a D800 form, stamped in my local Garda Station.

The garda I spoke to there today said he didn't have any of the forms, that I could download them online (I can't), and that he didn't need to stamp anything for me since I need to go into the motor tax office in person for a replacement license, all of which seems to be nonsense.

Could anyone who's replaced a lost license tell me what the procedure actually is?

I believe the Garda may have got it wrong & right

Here's the procedure straight from The RSA -

    http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Licensed-Drivers/Driving-licence/Lost-or-stolen-license/

You can download a form there but you still have to bring it to the Garda ...

Note there are two different forms -

One downloadable from RSA website if it is lost but expired

And one available from the motor tax office if it is lost but still current

Go with what Dublin City website says...

He needs d800 form which is not available to download.
I bet they have some in your local Motor Tax office.

And the d800 is for license that is still in date(not expired).

    From website:

Replace a lost or stolen licence/permit that was still in date

To get a replacement, follow these steps:
Step 1: Complete the Application Form D800

? Hmm yes I did read the website I linked ..

Don't think the OP mentioned if his licence is expired or otherwise when lost so gave both as detailed...

You cannot download d800 form, and this one is needed if you want to replace lost/stolen/misplaced licence that is in date.

I assume op's licence is in date, otherwise he would mentioned it...

What i am saying is you cannot download this form online, which is inconvenient, but true.

It can't be downloaded due to the signature sticker that is placed in the replacement licence.

Jeez wonkski give it a break...

Ref the RSA site I linked

The OP has not stated if his licence is expired or not

Better to make sure he has the correct Form

I said that only one form was downloadable - see second post ok.

Anyway I'm sure the OP can read what's on the link...

OP mentioned d800 form in first post - but i get your point.
Didn't want to sound smart or anything.
The bottom line here is that Garda know nothing these days, and it is not the first time they give wrong/outdated info to the public.

    No probs

Hope OP gets sorted - I have managed to loose multiples at this stage . Actually hate form filling...

Sorry for the confusion, I should have clarified that it's still in date. Thanks for the replies.

Ah, that makes sense. I was thinking it's a bit ridiculous that you can't download it.

So I do need to get it stamped by the Gardai? But once it is stamped I presume I can post it in, I don't need to go in to the motor tax office in person?

It reminds me of the scene out of the film 'Brazil' where the form filling bureaucracy is so complicated that the guy gets terminated over a typographical error on a form ...;)

You need to get it stamped down the cop shop. Then you can send it in by post.

    Wow, what a scam.

OH tried to pick me up a form from a couple of place in town, including the central library in the ILAC centre.
She was told there that all the forms have been recalled as they're now invalid and being replaced by new ones, except they won't be available until the new year.

At which point the fee will have gone up from €10 to €35.

Plus in the meantime I'll probably get done over Christmas for driving without a license :(

Going to try ringing the motor tax office on Monday, see if I can get a form direct from them.

I suspect that the issuance of licences may be suspended until after the changeover date in January.

No point in ringing the tax office, they are as bad as the Gardaí for not knowing stuff. Contact the RSA as they are will be able to tell you what happens between now and Feb when you've lost your licence and it can't be replaced because they pulled all the forms.

they are still issuing replacements for the old ones

i lost mine and got a form filled at the local garda station d8a, i think it was

then went to the motor tax office on the ballymum road and filled a d800 form and it was accepted

Actually, in fairness to the Dublin motor tax office, they replied to Saturday's email first thing this morning.

They said they'd post me out a form, but given the week that's in it, if I can get in to any of the Dublin motor tax offices during the week with photos and ID they'll do it on the spot.

OP you need to have the form stamped by Garda.

Additionally motor tax office person you will be dealing with, must be satisfied that you genuinely lost your licence. Otherwise he can refuse to issue replacement for you.
It happened to me once that I was refused.

That is perverse. How do you prove a negative?

    Sad but true.
    No need to prove anything.

    (2) Where the licensing authority are satisfied that the driving licence (in this Regulation referred to as the original licence) in respect of which such application is made has been lost, destroyed or mutilated they may, on payment of a fee of €5, issue such duplicate.

Law requires them to issue duplicate, only if they are satisfied that original was really lost or stolen.

They don't need to prove it wasn't lost or stolen. They can say they don't believe it was and that's enough.

    ???
Isn't the form stamped by Garda more than enough?
I can't imagine they refuse someone because of their opinion. What are you supposed to do then? Surrender license and applying for driving test???
I think there was some misunderstanding between you and Motor tax Office...

I think there was some misunderstanding between you and Motor tax Office...

I was in the Pasopport Office a number of years back and the person in front was looking to replace their Passport

They had everything filled in and signed up. The passort office refused to replace the passport because it was the Third replacement in about 10 years.

Reckon they had suspicions they were being sold.

I think that the current DL can be fairly easily modified - one of the reasons they are changing it.

I know someone who was offered a 'new' one without the test a good few years ago...

Form arrived in the post this morning. Swung by the Garda station and got it stamped no problem, over to the tax office and was #17 in line, so it's obviously not just me!
Was only waiting about 15 minutes max though.

So at least I have the application receipt if I get stopped over Christmas, plus I got it replaced for €10.

She did weirdly casually ask me as she was processing it: "you're not disqualified or anything", which seemed a bit odd.

It's worth dropping the form into the tax office to get that receipt. It's obviously not a license but it's better than driving around without anything; sods law meaning that the few weeks you're waiting on the license being the only time you're ever stopped and asked for your licence and all that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,465 ✭✭✭MOH

Having said earlier in the thread the lack available forms prior to the price going up is a bit of a scam, I now have to backtrack :o

I'm actually very impressed with the motor tax office. Dropped the stamped form over to them shortly before closing on Wednesday, and was told I'd receive the replacement in the post after Christmas.

New license was issued that day, and I got it this morning, so fair dues to them.
