Dreadfully sad news. The 15 year-old-sister of Erin Gallagher (13) who committed suicide last month has now taken her own life as well. Suicide is truly an epidemic in Ireland and Britain.
The teenage sister of a schoolgirl who committed suicide less than two months ago has died.

Shannon Gallagher, 15, who paid emotional tributes following 13-year-old Erin's death, was found dead in Co Donegal last night.

It is believed she had also killed herself.

The Donegal VEC, which runs Finn Valley College in Stranorlar, which both girls attended, said they were "trying to find the words and response to the tragedy".

"The school would still be in crisis mode," chief executive Shaun Purcell said.

The Gallagher family, from Ballybofey, were said to be "completely distressed" by the tragedy.

Erin had posted comments on a social networking site before her death on October 27, reacting to people she claimed had been bullying her.

Investigations were launched into claims that she had been a victim of cyber bullying.

A crisis incident team has been put in place at Finn Valley College after staff were notified of Shannon's death this morning.

Two psychologists, guidance counsellors, principal Frank Dooley and other teaching staff are meeting to assess how to support students.

Shannon was found dead at about midnight last night.

A Garda spokeswoman said she was found in a townland known as Stranamuck, near Castlefinn, Co Donegal, several miles from her home.

Jesus. The poor child and her poor family.

There needs to be a real and meaningful debate at national level to address why these kids feel such despair.

I'm not sure if its an epidemic. It's just that it is factually reported now as suicide. In the past media usually didn't explicitly state the cause of death. I would say it is at a similar rate to what it was 10 or 20 years ago but we have more information on it now.

Anyway what an awful thing to happen. RIP

I'm at a loss for words. May the little children find the peace they seemed to lack in life and may God help their family and friends.

It puts the stuff we argue about in here at times into stark contrast.

    RIP.

Actually cried when I read this story. I just want to go down to the school, get my kids and hug them.

I can't imagine what its like to lose a child to suicide, let alone two. Those poor people, I hope they have plenty of love and support around them. They are going to need it. RIP Erin and Shannon. xx

God help the poor parents, as a new(ish) parent I don't know how I would cope.
I fuc**ng hate bullies and bullying.

    May They Rest In Peace.

RIP to those dear kids. If ONLY adequate support had been put in place - this is one of our more tragic problems in this country; not tax hikes, dole cuts or any number of random problems.
For those who say that this a 'waste'... even though you may mean it's a waste of their future, their life up to now has not been a waste. Their parents can value and treasure every moment of their short lives, even though they came to an abrupt end. No life is wasted.

It is when something as bloody unnecessary as bullying takes it away.

Schools up and down the country need to take all bullying seriously- cyber or otherwise. This can't happen again-EVER.

I can't remember reading a more tragic story. Not only to lose your children in such a close time period, but in such a tragic way and interconnected way.

I'm not sure I could even continue myself if this happened to my two children.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 313 ✭✭D_D

That is seriously shocking news. The family were maybe, just maybe, beginning to terms with their youngest daughter killing herself. And now to go back to square one with this tragedy.

Unbelievably sad. Almost in tears thinking of it.

Do they have any other children to help them through this?
