Difference between GI and GL diets

    Hi want to lose weight and get healthier after Xmas
    I've heard a lot about the GI diet but have of GL also which is better
    Thinking of buying a book Patrick holford has written on GL

    Thanks any info be great

    GI is a rating of the effect a given food has on raising blood glucose levels, relative to pure glucose of the same weight.

    GL takes into account the serving size. So while something may a relatively high GI, it may have a low GL if it's usually consumed in very small amounts.

    TBH I feel there are much better ways to compose a healthy diet than to choose foods based on their GI/GL.

    Hi

    As Danlen stated GL takes into account serving size and is the 'updated version' of GI if you like.

    I actually think the GL plan is a great one to follow, particulary to balance out blood sugars which can be a major factor in weight gain. It discourages empty white carbs and encourages complex carbs with a much higher nutritional value.

    However you might find Patrick Holford a little restrictive as he only advocates 40 GLs in the weight loss phase which is very hard to stick to, 50-55 would be more realistic and more sustainable. His GL cookbook has some handy recipes in it.
