Little Known Patron Saints

Today is a feast day of the immaculate conception. That sounds a little silly to me as I don't believe a woman can get knocked up without having sex (IVF etc discounted).

So I got thinking what other feast days should we celebrate (these are allowed to be silly too)??

My brother always prays to Saint Boniface when he's struggling to find a parking space in town "Boniface, Boniface - help me find a parking space".
So obviously Boniface is the patron saint of parking spaces.
    Feast day - Saturday afternoons!

Padre Pio - is obviously the patron saint of bad goalkeepers - because like bad goalkeepers he kept leaving the ball through his hands.
    Feast day??

Joseph Christ - the patron saint of cuckolds. A lot of husbands at this time of year pray to Joseph when their wives head to town for their office party, before returning around 5am.
Feast day? The wife's Xmas office party night

Any other patron saints we should pray to??
Don't be shy to just make stuff up - they started it!

    Feast of Saint Never Again.

It's a weekly feast day celebrated mostly on Saturday or Sundays when people vow to never again touch alcohol.

It's only a half-day feast though as most people are back on the gargle by about 4 in the afternoon that same day.

    Saint Jude

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

My mam went to mass today because it's the feast day of the immaculate conception. Que my niece asking about how that was possible because wouldn't Mary need to have been pregnant for 9 months.

It amazes me how we can live in a 'catholic country' yet nobody bloody knows what the immaculate conception actually is! :pac:

Are the saints listed in the OP actually patron saints?

Isn't Patrick and Brigid Ireland's patron saints, other countries have their patron saints, and the rest just saints?

    It's been awhile!!

your niece has a point........mary gets "knocked up" on the 8th and gives birth on the 25th:confused:

maybe some theologian out there can explain it all

The immaculate conception is the birth of Mary without sin. It has absolutely nothing to do with someone getting knocked up without having sex.

Of course, most of the country seems to think along the same lines as yourself. Which I find hilarious.

No, we should spend it trying to conceive the future mother of God

No, it means she was born or conceived without original sin (the thing baptism is supposedly for).

    Virgin conception is completely different.

Both are equally as absurd though.

What do you mean 'as well?' it has nothing to do with a virgin birth.

Mary was born without original sin (for whatever reason). Obviously her parents did the deed. This was the 'immaculate conception' - conception of Mary without original sin.

Somewhere along the road, people started getting it confused with the virgin birth of Jesus. It has nothing to do with it any virgin birth.

On a side note, I am not religious and I don't believe in god. I just find the need to point this out to people whenever I see them confusing it. It's quite hilarious when the person in question claims to be a catholic.

Also, Mary was supposed to have been asked if she would consent to all this by Archangel Michael (?)

Was there a sub in place (without original sin) if Mary said "naw, ask me friend"

Or was Mary the sub??? ;)

Serious? Would be a bit strange if some supreme being made our only way to reproduce as a species a sin!

No, original sin is us going from being nice, good little obedient servants of god to being kicked out of Eden for our disobedience and guilt.

yes i am, isn't that why the cc has a jaundice view on sex... i.e. try not to enjoy it, its for pro-creation only, no contraception, celibacy in priesthood and all that?

sex i.e. adam & eve is the original sin

Just think, there was probably some far more awesome lady partying her way around Nazareth who, upon being approached by Michael, said "f*ck that ****, Imma start a business." and lived happily ever after, unbeknownst to any of us.

My favourite weird patron saint is St. Agatha, Patron Saint of Bell founders.

Agatha had her breasts cut off by her persecutors, giving rise to some of the weirdest NSFW Christian paintings you could ever unexpectedly stumble over. As a result, her statues tend to depict her as standing around with her amputated boobs on a little dish in a kind of "Ah for feck's sake" kind of gesture. This boobs-on-a-plate, over time, began to be "reinterpreted" as a pair of... bells. And also breadloaves.

How many times do you have to repeat "Oh Mary, concieved without sin, pray for us" in that monotonous prayer before it sinks in what the immaculate conception is?! Nothing to do with the virgin birth! Mary gotta be all perfect and spotless, immaculate even, so her son Jesus wouldn't have a bad reputation. That God, and his crazy ideas...
