Hi Im wondering if there is a healthy and tasty substitute for bread, I eat a lot of bread and would like to cut back. I tried the ryvita cracker bread but with tuna, cheese and ham anything really I found it plain and tasteless. Any suggestions will be great, :)

I used to love my bread too but ended up just cutting it out completely and replacing with salads, Cous Cous, chickpeas etc

After a while I just stopped craving it and would rather have a nice salad over a sandwich or a roll.

Is it just bread in general or for specific things like sandwiches etc?

Now ill have the rye ryvitas with some humus or rice cakes with peanut butter

You say you eat a lot but don't say how. Do you have toast for breakfast, a roll for lunch and a late night sandwich, etc? Are you just trying to come up with different snacks to try because you don't know what else to have, purely out of habit?

For breakfast or an afternoon snack, you could have 2-3 pieces of fruit and a yoghurt. You could also hard boil eggs and have a few of them a day (the protein will fill you for longer). If you want a snack, try popping a handful of nuts and raisins (opt for unsalted and unprocessed varieties).

One of my favourite snacks/meals is a smoothie. I have a kenwood (like this) which blends everything in the travel mug, meaning very little cleaning in the morning before work. For mine, I put in an apple, banana, celery stick, natural yoghurt, orange juice, peanut butter, dessicated coconut, flax seed and whey protein and have it for brunch. It's more filling than toast and a helluva lot more nutritionally dense.

Yeah I would have toast in the morning and then a sandwich at lunch but I just want to cut it out all together. Im not a big fan of salads so it would be hard. So If there was something like craker bread thats healthier and tasty to have with tuna and that. I have heard of rice cakes with peanut butter must try it. Thanks for all the suggestions. :)

One of my favourite breakfasts is bacon and poached eggs and I used to have it on toast all the time. Now I'll just make it without the toast and add in something like mushrooms instead - I honestly don't notice it without the bread anymore!

Eggs are a great food for breakfast so you could make some scrambled eggs without toast or poached eggs etc. As LordChessington said, boiled eggs are good to keep you going and fill you up.

alternatively you could have a bowl of porridge or something similar instead of the toast.

If you cut out the bread in the morning then there's no reason why you couldn't have it at lunch and instead just have 1 slice to cut down portion size. It sounds like it may be easier to replace the bread at breakfast instead of changing lunch.

Rice cakes with peanut butter are amazing especially if you're treating yourself to a thin layer of nutella underneath the peanut butter :D Also apple slices and peanut butter work well together.

Try the sesame ryvitas, they are much tastier.

You can use iceberg lettuce as wraps.

I don't doubt they are amazing but if the OP is looking for a healthy lunch idea I think, that although better than wheat, this is of little value tbh.

you could try make some of the flax seed breads touted around here which can be nice without the "badness" of the ordinary kind also if you look up galettsfrom the dukan diet they are oatbran pancake like yokes that you can make a healthy enough low carb sandwich from. I add protein powder and sometimes flavourings or stevia to make a nice desert with yoghurt for the whole family.

Best place to look would be around the wholesome food section, i.e. where the gluten free, vegan and vegetarian stuff is. They look like and are packaged just like colourful rice cakes.

I quite like raw carrots and hummus as a snack! Not quite a bread substitution though!

I don't tend to eat much bread but I am partial to a sandwich with a black coffee before going to the gym.

I never buy bread, but while I was away with work recently I had to stock up on various things and there was a limited supply. I found a product called Burgen Soy/Linseed bread - check it out at http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=253803607

I know some people won't be soy advocates, but as far as nutritional values go I thought it was far better than a simple wheat bread. It's very high protein... considering it's bread. Great fibre and it tastes BRILLIANT! Two slices of this with a good quality crunchy pea nut butter tastes incredible and fueled me for very long and active days.

Sounds interesting might give it a try, can I get it in the bread section of any shop?

I haven't had it since I was working, but it was available in Tesco while I was there. That was a UK tesco... so I can't say whether they stock it in Ireland, but I assume it should be available.

Aha! Looks like it is listed on the tesco.ie site, so I guess that should be a good sign. http://www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=253803607
