I'm a beginner, looking to start up, but be serious about blogging. I'm aiming to use wordpress.org. what web-hosting site should I use that is compatible with that? anything else I really need to know? thanks.

Just a few bits to dwell on:
You need a domain name .ie or .com – both have different avenues to achieve the domain name.
Hosting: If you’re on a wordpress setup you need an Linux server, a small hosting package and the ability to set-up and maintain a sql database (through cpanel or similar)
Some possible hosting packages:
http://www.letshost.ie/hosting/packages/
http://www.blacknight.com/minimus-hosting.html
http://hosting.digiweb.ie/website-hosting/
You need an email address(es) – fairly straightforward.
You need some FTP software (FileZilla is good)
You need your PC virus protected!
To start with I’d keep it simple until you’re happy with the site and the backend of Wordpress.

Discussions on web-hosting companies are banned on boards (although Blacknight have a Talk To forum on boards: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=375)

Anyway, most of them are compatible with, and have one-click installs for, wordpress. If you're technically-minded, you could download XAMPP, run it on your local machine and install wordpress there, so you could play around with it before you invest in hosting or a domain name
