I was afraid you'd ask that.
A visit to the attic is needed as original box & stuff went there.
Hopefully the windows vista cd was supplied & I can find it..

combofix is running at the moment..

    Hi

    I powered on , f8 , then screen shows
loaded: windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys for about a minute.
    Then safe mode desktop opens.
I go to usb stick & right-clicked combofix & selected ' run as administrator'..

I did NOT get a warnings box about Avg,
A window opened called 'administrator: autoscan'.
    scanning for infected files..
    completed stage 1 to 38.
    then
access denied . administrator permissions are needed.
then completed stage 39 to 50

    then froze again.

    Hi ASJ

There were no disks supplied with the vaio.

It came with software called ' vaio recovery center '

It was never used , so no recovery disks were ever created.

Reading the limited booklet that came with the pc gives possible options,

When you can start windows, you can restore c: drive to original factory condition or

When you can start windows, you can restore the entire computer system to original factory condition or

When you can NOT start windows, you can recover the computer system from recovery partition,
ie, on startup press f10, if 'edit boot options' is shown then 'enter' and do one of the two options listed above.

Do I save my files & pics & docs to a usb stick & then try the 1st option ??

Would I try to update this 'vaio recovery center' software from 'safe mode with networking', before running it ??

Would I run ' vaio recovery center ' from safe or normal mode ??

Is there any other options that I can do ??

    Thanks .

Sorry for the delay John, I'm not great with these sort of issues. You would be better off registering and posting in the windows vista forum here for help

    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/

Your logs are clean so it doesn't seem like its malware related.

    hey there

im having a problem with this virus.

when i try to startup in safe mode+ networking the virus is still popping up before i can do anything.

I have malwarebytes on usb, can i run this another way?

Also i can log-in as administrator in safemode without the virus coming up. If i run malwarebytes logged in as administrator should that work? or do i need to run it when im logged in under my own user name?

    any help appreciated

Hi ASJ & other who helped,

As I needed the pc for Xmas, I took to a repair shop.
Turns out the HD had bad sectors ( accounts for the intermittent chkdsk's needed ).
Was told there were no traces of malware & that ukash virus attack and following HD crash were coincidental.
Replaced HD and reloaded vista & personal stuff. Working for the last week now.

    Thanks again
    john64.
