Just be sure to wear your full GAA strip (mud stains are optional) and long socks at all times in the gym ;)

I think that's a terrible comment from one of the Mods towards someone who is just looking for some help and advice

I would say that even the OP probably thinks it's funny...because 1. he is thinking 'How does this guy know me and how does he know what I wear to the gym' or 2. He's been in the gym and seen 'those' guys.

Also not being a mod here on this forum just makes them 'normal' people as far as I am concerned and if a mod came and had a go at somebody over a funny comment like that....I think we'd all have a problem with that.

    1. What experience do you have?

    2. Why are you thinking about getting into the gym?

I don't often get up on my high horse, but i thought we had slightly better standards around here than to be demeaning someone just because they play GAA (or any other sport)

    Oh, I don't know.

    Ohhh don't be like that.

People abuse me all the time...or comment on how I must be really mad or upset and stuff like that...I sit here crying and no one defends me.

As an aside...I think anything you would be happy to say to someone's face is fine....but that's probably why I'm not a mod.

....well that and the fact that I am forever calling people retards or idiots or telling them that they're wrong...then later having to show them that they are wrong.

But mainly I think it's my view that it should be fine to say anything you would be happy to say to someone's face.

Nice guy grow a sense of humour for god sake. I am not a mod here just another regular poster and we have all seen the guys in full match kit in the gym, it's a running joke, like curling in the squat rack......

Alright so 8 posts later I'll give you some actual advice to get you started (although Will Heffernan will help when you answer the Q's i'd imagine).

For GAA at club level being able to run like fúck is far more important than being able to out muscle lads. So if you're cardio isn't up to scratch then I'd focus more so on that than doing what many GAA lads do and just be casual bastards in the gym sitting on machines and the likes. Just don't focus solely on weights and you'll be fine. If you want to be efficient about things then look up starting strength or similar program which focuses on compound lifts (e.g. deadlifts, squats, rows etc.) rather than doing a bodybuilder type split such as back/bi, chest/tri etc.

There's loads of info out there and google is your friend. Ask the instructors in the gym how to perform the compound movements correctly. Also don't neglect stretching/flexibility work or you'll end up an injury riddled mess :o
