What´s important to you?

There was a thread in AH entitled ´Life. What´s it all about?´ and various posters gave their POV´s. Mine was: Life is about being happy and being good. However, that would mean different things for different people. We focus on different ways to be good and different things make us happy. All very common sense. So I´m just interested to know what things are really important to you in life. Do you feel you have a purpose or calling? Any causes or campaigns you´re dedicated to? What makes you most happy - family? activity? personal achievement? What do you strive for?

I don´t know if this is a good idea for a topic. Maybe I´m nosey :pac:, but I´m always interested in finding out about other peoples´ value systems...

Being the best that I can be, and achieving my potential.

    Being independent.

Waking up with purpose every morning.

Bringing happiness to family and friends.

I love the John Lennon quote,

"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life."

For me, to be happy it's all about the people around me. A few good friends that I can love and trust and a strong healthy, happy family around me and I'm pretty happy!

My family - their health and happiness, and my own of course.

I like having enough money to pay the bills. I don't want to be loaded, once the wolf is kept away from the door, I'm happy.

I like having time to spend with people. I really cherish time with my son, playing with lego, reading together, walking to school, we have the best chats :) Time with my bf too, doesn't have to be anything fancy, sharing a bag of chips with a candle lit and I'm happy! Coffee with friends/my mum...little things like that are hugely important to me.

I like learning too. I love my job, but I don't thing I'm finished studying yet, I reckon I'll go back to do more.

I love animals. I can't wait to have a bigger place so I can rescue more!! I can see myself getting much more involved in my local animal rescues.

I think I'm passionate about everything that I throw myself into. I'm pretty happy with what I've achieved so far:)

As for a purpose or calling...I don't know if this is that exactly...but I would really really really love to become a foster parent. I think there is something very special about providing a bed, love, warmth and a homely atmosphere for a child who may not have that, or a child who has never had that.

Without a doubt my immediate family are the most important to me, they come before anything else.

Purpose? I'm not sure. I tend to just stride along happy out without any purpose. And I like it that way.

It's very, very important to be sincere, stick to my principles and to practise what I preach. I try to go to protests here as often as I can, sign petitions, keep updated on the news, help strangers when I can, not bitch behind people's backs and just be nice to people as I go about my business. I'm no saint but I try my best to be decent.

It goes without saying that my family are very important to me too.

And at the moment I teach English and as I work long hours for not great money, it's important for my sanity to get along with my students and luckily, so far, they've almost all been great and I can honestly say I like my job.

As someone else said, my independence is also very important to me. I won't take loans from people and if I can't afford it, I don't get it. I live within my means.

I sometimes think that I have already achieved my greatest purpose. I came into my boyfriend's life when he needed me most. A lot has happened in the time we have been together but I feel like I came into my boyfriend's life to help him care for his father and cope with his passing, the last part is ongoing.

I feel like I changed as a person because of what I did. I gave up a job to move to another county, a social life, friends and living on my own and I just found a side to me that I didn't know existed because I had never accessed it before. I feel like I changed forever and it will colour my choices and actions forever.

That to me is the greatest thing I could have ever done. Sadly I only enjoyed 2 short years with my boyfriend's dad before he passed away, I would've loved many more.

Aside from that I would just like to stay happy and safe with my boyfriend and our dogs, maybe one day, a child. I would love to open a biker cafe/bakery :)

My children, my husband, my friends, my work, the things I do just for me.

Ensuring I do all I can to make sure my family stay safe and happy, especially my nephews and niece. I'd do anything for those kids.

That my grandmother, who is in a nursing home with Alzheimers, never feels lonely or sad.

Starting my own family with my boyfriend someday and ensuring our children always feel loved and safe.

Giving my pets (all rescues) the best lives possible and saving any other animals I can along the way.

Never working somewhere that makes me so unbelievably unhappy again. No matter the money- happiness and health are always my priority. If this last year has taught me anything it's that I can live in a shoe box, surviving on the bare minimum, and still be happier than I've ever been before.

    +1 to this sentiment.

Myself and my hubby were both redundant together at one point last year, and it was lovely!! We used to go on nice walks and have lunch together and generally just enjoy each others company in a way that you would never be able to do during normal work time!! And the money just didnt matter, so long as there was enough to keep the wolf from the door - grand!

Its also important to me to learn. I am constantly striving to better understand the world around me. I just find so many things so interesting so I want to understand them more!

Just to be happy, thats my aim! If I'm destined to be single forever thats fine so long as I'm happy and my nieces and nephews are happy :)

A couple of months ago I was coming to something of a crossroads personally, and in my education, and some hard decisions had to be made. So I decided to make a list of what was important to me, and what I needed from life to be happy.

Turns out the path I was on didn't make my list, so I changed. Not drastically, but deviating from the path you've been on for 4 years is a big deal I guess.

I work with people with intellectual disabilities, both professionally and personally (volunteering), and I cannot imagine ever not doing that. I love it, so much. It makes me happy, knowing that I'm supporting people to take more charge of their own lives, tell their stories and effect change for themselves. It's not wholly altruistic, because I get a huge amount from it. But I know that I have to work in an environment where I help people. I was doing a PhD in the area, but I realised that I didn't want to be an academic, researching people from on high and all that, so I stopped. I'm doing an MLitt now and I am so so much happier. I can still effect change, work with people 1-1 and that is what really makes me happy.

Personally, I want a nice house, somewhere quiet with my gf, maybe a couple of kids, and a big stupid Labrador, and maybe a really fat ginger tabby cat that just sits in front of the fire all day. I want to spend my weekdays working with people with disabilities in an advocacy capacity, and come home in the evenings and sit with my family and do crafts, or cook, or bake. I don't want a pile of money, just enough to cover all the bases and have a bit left over to save for a rainy day and have holiday or two. I want to be able to make other people happy, make myself happy, and create things. Family and friends are incredibly important to me, and I want to be able to spend time with them. And if that happens to include a kick-ass camper van to tour around in, then so be it! :p

I know I'm the kind of person who'll always be doing courses and learning new skills- something I picked up from my mother- not neccesarily academic. I've had enough of that for the forseeable future!

I don't want to be so busy making a living that I forget to make a life.

Knowing that no one else really cares what I do is important and liberating to me, so dancing in the street when I feel like it. The punchline of life is death so try not to sweat the little things or the big things for that matter.
As long as I have enough to pay my way, never a borrower or a lender be, then I'm happy.

For me the most important thing is to be content and for my little girl to have everything she ever needs and to also be content.

I don't have any huge dreams or take life too seriously. I try to be a good person and to make sure the people in my life know how much I appreciate them.

Family are the most important with my friends coming a very close second. I would do anything for any of them, no matter how much they wreck my head. I value each and every relationship i have with them all and a part of me would be missing if i lost any of them. I'm already missing two parts of me. I refuse to lose anymore of me.

So yeah, I'm gonna freeze everyone i know so they never leave my life :D
