The draw for the RWC in 2015 is taking place on Monday afternoon.

    The pools are:

Pool 1: NZ, OZ, SA, and France
Pool 2: Eng, Ire, Samoa, and Argentina
Pool 3: Wales, Italy, Tonga, and Scotland

Best scenario for us I think is Oz and Italy.
Worst scenario for us is NZ and Wales.

A good group for the tournament is NZ, Eng, and Wales.

Well at least we won't have the nightmare of Argentina in the group.

Wishlist 1 (The dream pool) - Oz, Ireland, Italy...
Wishlist 2 (I'll take it) - SA, Ireland, Italy
Wishlist 3 (Please, please no!!!) - France, Ireland, Wales
Wishlist 4 (Just shoot us now) - NZ, Ireland, Wales

In short, anyone but France/NZ and Wales!!

Sad to see half the Six Nations in tier 3.

I'd like to see Tonga and Samoa in the same pool, it would be good to see a PI team in the quarter finals. Jesus it would be some game as well. If any of the top tier sides go into the tournament with a powderpuff pack, they might be in trouble with those two in the pool.

In terms of Ireland, NZ and Wales in the pool would be disasterous.

I'd happily take NZ in the group stages. If we go to the World cup in decent form, then we won't gave to worry about them again until the final - as long as we avoid Wales. Any draw with Wales in our group is a disaster.

Ideally winning the group would be lovely

There is zero chance of that happening v the AB's

Ideally is the key word there, somehow we managed that in 2011 yet failed to progress.

I guess having the ABs in the group could work provided that we can avoid Wales and have our group paired with whatever group Australia find themselves in

The problem is that against the AB's we're almost guaranteed to lose. At least against Aus, SA and France (as things stand- that's all we can measure on) on a very good day there is always a chance.

Even if we avoided Wales, say we happened to lose to Italy, Tonga or Scotland (stranger has happened) at least there'd be a bit of hope one immense performance could still see us through. However if we had the AB's we'd be gone

New Zealand - England - Wales
    Australia - Argentina - Tonga
South Africa - Samoa - Scotland
    France - Ireland - Italy

That'd be my hopings. NZ, Aus, SA and Ire to top groups. Eng, Arg, Sco, Fra finish second. We draw Sco in 1/4's. NZ draw Arg, Aus draw Eng, SA draw Fra. Semi's - NZ v Aus, Fra v Ire. Final of Aus v Ire. Ire to win. :D

It's almost impossible to get a group of death in rugby with so few good teams, the only 1 to avoid is Wales, and they could be in tatters by then anyway,

Nobody will want Samoa or Tonga in their group the way they are progressing at the moment esp Samoa , they will be scary in three years time.

I feel on our day we can take Australia or SA, so its prob best we draw Nz or France in the group stage so we don't meet again till the final. However if we draw Wales I think we'll be in trouble..

Yeah, exactly. It's much better to have NZ in your group, because then you go into the opposite side of the draw if you qualify for the next stage. I don't care who we draw so long as we avoid Wales in the third pot and Fiji in the 4th pot. Fiji are a much better team than they were in the AIs. In a world cup, they can actually call up all their best players.

Fiji were muck in the last wc , it would be Samoa and Tonga I would not like to meet.

Yeah, but Fiji are in the 4th pot, and 2.5 years is a long time. Samoa are in the same pot as ourselves.

If the ABs get a strong pool they will be rather battle hardened come the knockouts. You cannot win a world cup by getting a lucky draw and having someone else knock out the difficult teams for you. You need to take care of that yourself and be a worthy champion. I think you guys should back your team and hope they have a pool of death. A team which emerges from there will be ready to win 3 knockout games in a row.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,681 ✭✭✭✭P_1

So a pool containing the 3 PI teams is possible?

I wonder if the tweets of https://twitter.com/Eliota_Sapolu trigger some kind of international incident if that was the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭DonR8

best be for us will be NZ out of tier 1 cause if we get them in our pool we wont see them again till the final

so NZ, Ire,Italy or Scotland from tier 3

That is a bit of a freakish one off. I don't think that sort of luck is destined for the Irish lads sorry.

Wanting the weakest possible Pot 3 team is completely logical imo.

    ***********
Are the 8 as yet nonqualified teams seeded into two pots, or is it just one pot of 8 teams from which each group gets allocated two teams?

    AFAIK they are
Europe 1 and Europe 2 (likely two from Romania, Georgia, Russia).
    Oceania 1 (almost certainly Fiji)
    Asia 1 (almost certainly Japan)
Americas 1 and Americas 2 (likely two from USA, Canada and Uruguay)
Africa 1 (decent contest for this spot with traditional qualifiers Namibia up against it).
Repechege 1 (likely to be between the 3rd team in Europe and 3rd in Americas).

    Pot 4:
    Oceania, Asia, America1, Europe1

    Pot 5:
    America2, Europe2, Repechage, Africa

So (on current form/ranking) likely to be:
    4: Fiji, Japan, USA/Canada, Georgia
    5: USA/Canada, Romania/Esp/Rus, Rom/Esp/Rus/Uru, Namibia/Zim/Mad/Ken

Whatever about who we get as 1st and 3rd seed, America2 is certainly the team from pot 5 to avoid. Canada have always finished ahead of USA in qualifying, but at the moment there's nothing between them, and they're both significantly better than Romania, Spain or Uruguay.

Why is there a need to make the draw nearly 3 years in advance of the tournament? 6 or 8 months in advance would be plenty of time, it would get more publicity then, and the rankings would be a better barometer of form come the tournament itself.

There was a thread last week about this - whilst personally I think its wrong there was a few plausible reasons put forward.

Compared to Scotland, Italy and Scotland, yes please not Wales.

Anyone got a say on a group of hope and death for Ireland?

Hope: South Africa, Ireland, Tonga, Canada, Namibia

Death: NZ, Ireland, Wales, Fiji, USA

It's more "Have you seen Wales play Ireland lately?" It's three years away, but they currently have our number and this crop of Welsh players love beating Irish teams in big games.

All we can hope for is that the officials know the rules. Not much I know but it can/did make a difference.
