Retro City Rampage: DX Wii Physical Edition!
    rcr_wii_hdr.jpg

    https://www.vblank.com/20200702_rcr_wii.php
That's right! Retro City Rampage and Shakedown: Hawaii are BOTH getting Wii physical editions!

Both will launch on Thursday, July 9th at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm UK for $29.99 USD each.

They're limited to 3,000 copies each

There's more besides, including updates for the game on other platforms. It's out now.
The 3DS update will bring much faster game saving, and improves in-game load times too (especially when starting arcade challenges).

The upcoming iOS update will finally add native support for the iPhone X displays. This was actually much more work than you might think (which is why it took so long), but it sure does look great now filling the whole screen!

By the way, while not quite new to DX+ specifically, did you know the PC version now also supports the PlayStation Classic controller? :)

Oh, and okay, the Switch icon now has the game's title on it ;)

You can read all about it at the link.

I ordered a copy of RCR and S:H for Wii the other day. Was going to hold out for the Wii u version of S:H, but it looks like the Wii u version might be region locked to NA, so just got it for Wii instead.

But if it turns out the Wii u version is out for Europe as well, I’ll probably end up getting it too :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭deadduck

Got the mail today confirming the Wii U version of S:H is being released Aug 20th. As expected though, it’s NA region locked, no PAL version :(

Is there any risk of Wii U network content like Mario Maker levels being blocked anytime soon?

Or the Wii U online shop etc?

I haven't booted my Wii U for several months since I got the Switch Lite and the Oculus Quest but just curious if I need to download lots of levels now before content is cut off.

They must've noticed me playing at the weekend and realised someone still used the Wii U

My daughter still plays it regularly, all features are still available as far as I can see.

Online servers being shut down on 31 March. Think you can download up to 100 courses before then.

It is still playable, if you want to create your own levels offline. It works really well on a Gamepad/TV combination.

Grand so the courses can be played offline if I downloaded them before end of the month?

    Lucky timing!

    actually according to https://www.thegamer.com/super-mario-maker-wii-u-sever-shutdown/
it's affirmative that I can play the courses offline

cheers to CastorTroy for bumping this thread!

To be honest, I bought the game a few years ago and didn't really get around to properly playing with it as the PSVR took over most of my time :D

I was on the Wii U eShop and I see Shin'en are finally having a good sale for it, and as it turns out, 3DS. It took them long enough, normally they only knock a few Euro off.

The last date for adding funds via credit card is fast approaching, 23rd March. It's handy enough when you have the link, plus you can add as little as €10, whereas buying eShop cards(ends 29th August this year), the minimum there is €15.

I would hope more developers discount their games before the option to buy funds is gone and then the eShop itself is permanently gone by March 2023. It would be nice too, to see Nintendo give some decent discounts before it's all gone, though I wouldn't hold my breath. Stuff like the Virtual Console games have never had any discounts, apart from a handful of them as part of a Trial Campaign way back in 2013 to promote the launch of the Virtual Console.

Seems a little strange they wouldn't discount everything just to squeeze out the last bit of profit...rather than no discount and sell nothing

I purchased and dowloaded Mario Advance 4 (SMB3) & Fast Racing Neo today. Any other titles I should consider?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,012 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

Reminds me to get the Wii U version of Super Mario Advance 4 since they put the e-reader stages on there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 590 ✭✭✭Len_007

    Precisely why I bought it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,931 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

The link to add credit card funds to your eShop account was supposed to expire at the end of last night, I forgot. But I was still able to add funds early this morning. Probably the last bit of time left to do so, by that method at least.

    Announcement said May bro.

    This be March.

    You got time still.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,931 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Today is your last chance to directly top up your Wii U and 3DS accounts using Nintendo eShop cards. Though you can continue to use your bank card if you link those accounts(NNID) to your Switch account, if you have one that is. Lidl, I know sell Nintendo eShop cards, if you have a branch close by.

Pretendo looks promising for getting the Wii U back up and running with some online functionality.

Reminds me I really must hack my WiiU someday.. so far I've only hacked the Wii part (added Homebrew Channel)

I'm assuming you get lots more power running emulators directly without having to go in via the Wii section?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,256 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

I've a load of Wii / Wii U stuff I should take into CEX and swap for Switch games. It's just gathering dust. But I'm terrified it'll be worth an extra 50 euro in 20 years time 😝

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Pretendo is more bringing the functionality of things like miiverse back, like they did with the weather channel, news channel and the like on Wii with Riiconnect24. Not the finished article yet by any means.

I used the below video to get started when I was modding my Wii u. I didn’t realise until a good while later that online still worked, i.e I could play MK8 online with zero issues. I assumed modded consoles would be auto banned from online, but nope :)

    https://youtu.be/7ppSQJxMmNs

the vid is by Ravi Abbot of the RetroHour podcast and is really straightforward and thorough 👍

If you have a copy of Tank!Tank!Tank! there then your concerns might be valid and then some.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,256 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

I was thinking of creating a Nintendo "tower" ( like a PC tower case ) with monitor to house all the Nintendo stuff. Plus a raspberry pi for the emu stuff.

Or ....Nintendo produce a switch 2 with the power of a Steam Deck that can run all their back catalogue 😃

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,922 ✭✭✭budgemook

Hi - I bought Super Mario Maker from CEX for the young lad - I was delighted to see that the servers are still running for previously uploaded levels so there are loads of levels to play - the only thing is most of the ones we tried so far are way too hard for him - he's only 6. Is there a way to find easier ones or search by description? Another thing he's asking about is the Goomba Challenge which is something he saw on YouTube I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,256 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Maybe just Google for them, the search facilities are probably not great in the actual game.. also make sure you are getting Wii U results

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,931 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Wii U may break for some system owners if not used, reports claim

No danger of this happening to my Wii U. I'd love to know how many hours over the years mine has been on. It must be years.

I bought EVERY Nintendo Wii U & 3DS game before the Nintendo eShop closes

There's still a few games I want to buy, I was hoping Nintendo would discount some VC games at least before the end. But this is Nintendo, some of the games have never had a discount, so they're hardly going to start now with just a week left before the Wii U and 3DS eShops close permanently for new purchases.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Would you ever consider hacking it, or is that not your thing slig?

Once the shop shuts I don't think there are any moral grounds at all to stop you obtaining the game you want by other means. Not depriving anyone of money when there's no way of giving it to them.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,256 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

He bought Every. Single. Game. And he has enough time to 100% games, because he's the completionist.

How many real lives could he have saved with that money. And could be spend his time doing something useful ? Like create a game or become a doctor or a musician. And there a load of similar channels on YouTube.

It really is a mad ******* world. 😁

    Edit ...

The people who make these videos make more money than the people making the games.

    It's bizarre.

Definitely, we are living in a simulation.

No, I've never hacked any of my Nintendo hardware. Not even the NES and SNES Mini Classics.

Missed out on playing Batman on the NES Classic? That's the only reason to own one 🤣

This Thursday is the last chance for companies to do discounts on their games. 50%(or whatever number) of something, is better nothing of nothing. I don't expect Nintendo to partake though.

The thing is, I have almost everything worth getting regarding 3rd party and Indies. I'll buy Armillo, it's a game I forgot about and maybe some VC games. There's Pullblox World, but I don't know if I want to pay €10 for it at this stage. It only ever once had a sale where it was €6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,931 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

The last hours of the Wii U and 3DS eShops are upon us. I bought Metroid: Zero Mission, Pullblox World, Armillo and Mr Pumpkin Adventure.

Reading a Reddit thread just there reminded me that I purchased a Humble Bundle years ago, I can't remember what was in it or where those codes are. I think there was a Darksiders game as part of it. That might have been the only game I redeemed from it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 590 ✭✭✭Len_007

Forgot all about my humble bundle purchase! Some decent games there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,476 ✭✭✭Irish Halo

Ugh I found my codes didn't redeem some and now the shop is saying you can't (I mean I shouldn't have left it till now 😂)

Slightly better than me, where I initially gave a bunch of the codes away and then later bought them at full price because of course I **** did.

I didn't bother go looking for mine after reading something earlier. It would take forever anyway trawling through my e-mail.

    Wii U & Nintendo 3DS Redemption Deadlines

    https://support.humblebundle.com/hc/en-us/articles/4641633094299-Wii-U-Nintendo-3DS-Redemption-Deadlines

"As detailed by Nintendo in their Wii U & Nintendo 3DS eShop Discontinuation article, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS titles will no longer be available for purchase after March 31, 2022. Additionally, you have until March 31, 2022, to redeem any Wii U or Nintendo 3DS keys before they become invalid. Please note this also affects Bundle purchases."

Vodafone recently sent me out their new Gigabox modem and I cannot get the WiiU to connect to it. The young lad is not impressed.

it appears to have 2.4ghz enabled but it’s hard to tell as the vodafone firmware is pretty poor. Has anyone had this issue and figured it out? If not, any recommendations for a LAN adapter that works with WiiU?

Could be a few things. Check the wireless security, WPA/WPA2 should be fine. Wii U might not support newer WPA3.

Also if there is a setting for encryption, this should be AES (and not TKIP) I believe.

Lastly, the protocol mode. You can have 2.4Ghz broadcast using 802.11b/g/n or a combination. If it’s set to n only that might be a problem - it was for 3DS but not sure about Wii U.

I used my Wii U recently on a 2.4Ghz 802.11g/n AES network and it worked fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,922 ✭✭✭budgemook

I got it working in the end - the new VF router has very restricted settings and does not allow you to split wifi. I found away around it by downloading an old version of the app for the router.

Wii U LIVES! Online Play Restored for Mario Kart 8 & Splatoon!

Online play is back for these titles after a 5 month absence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,922 ✭✭✭budgemook

MK8 is still getting plenty of play in my house. Might buy Splatoon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,931 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

It'll be a sad day. Also, Switch 2? It'll probably be announced sometime around that date.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,931 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I was playing Splatoon earlier. No shortage of players whatsoever.

Unfortunately, I can't find my copy of Mario Kart 8, it's been missing for some time. I think I might have mistakenly thrown it out.

I put on Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on as well. There were people online there as well.

But the game I played most online this evening was Call of Duty: Black Ops II. I played team death match, again, plenty of players, though it did drop off as time went on.

I hadn't played my Wii U in ages, though I still use it regularly for its web browser. So I encountered some errors when trying to start up some of the games. I think it's due to failing eMMC chips.

I found a workaround by deleting the updates, but copying my save data over to my SSD, then redownloading the update to there.

The servers for COD: Black Ops II were still working after everything was supposed to be shut. I might try it again tomorrow to see what it's like.

That game was terrific on Wii U. The online was flawless, no crappy phone app for voice chat, just used the gamepad or headset. You could have 2 people play online with the one Wii U, each with their own screen. And this evening when I wanted to use the TV to watch some programmes, I just switched the action to the gamepad as the screen, used the Wii U pro controller and did both.

The Wii U had a tonne of potential that largely went untapped by the majority of developers. Wii U got 2 Call of Duty games and here we are a decade later and Switch has none.
