Only person that would ask me is my mother and she's politely told to FO, everybody else know better than to ask, the same way i would never ask someone that.

I'm very inquisitive about this kind of thing, I love to know how much others make. I may probe for a clue but would never ask a person outright. Most people are uncomfortable disclosing such info, I am too and usually don't discuss my financial earnings with people outside my immediate family.

If someone asked I would tell them generally. My dad would never tell anyone, even my mother never knew, he wasn't mean it was how he was brought up. I hate that, I can't understand why people hide how much they earn. If they want anyone can look up my pay scale on the net.

My father never told my mother because he said she had no idea about the value of money and she'd only worry.

    Bastard was on great money.

I've no problem telling someone how much I earn. It's not like its millions or anything. No big deal.

Wouldn't have a problem with it I guess ('cause I make feck all anyway). But it does depend on the person. It's ferociously transparent when someone asks you how much you earn purely to create the opportunity for them to make a veiled boast about their own earnings.

    Simple answer: 'Not enough'

Why do people get offended. It's only a question. Obv if you don't know em well it's a bit odd

Sometimes I wonder if I am like Sheldon from The Big Bang. Not a genius or anything but not understanding why people get annoyed by such things.

I simply say "What are you, the tax man? Mind your own business."

am not the type of person people ask about money, the only time have ever come across is it is online,on disability forums when people wonder what benefits people get for various conditions,am very open about what benefits that get,not able to understand numbers so without hearing it off someone havent got a clue of the amount.
some people will get very militant when they hear am on DLAs high rate mobility as they like many ignorants of severe developmental disability havent got a clue how complex our mobility/outdoors issues are.

I've no problem telling anyone who asks. It's not the kind of thing I'd typically be inclined to bring up in conversation but I don't think it's anything to get your knickers in a twist about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,906 ✭✭✭✭PhlegmyMoses

I've never understood why some people think it's a big deal. I wouldn't tell all the degenerates on here but I don't mind irl.

No problem with it.. I'm surrounded my ESL teachers so everyone wants an idea of what schools pay what and how much they could be earning for privates and that. If I know I make significantly more than someone though, I'll be very vague but if it's friends who have good jobs, it doesn't matter.

i was out in a Japanese restaurant the other day and this guy while serving the food just comes out as cheeky as ****, where do you work and how much do you get paid. He said he was looking for a job as they told him he had to shave off his beard in the job he was in currently. so i told him

Depends on how well I know the person. If it's something I've just met and we start talking about work and they ask that, it would be pretty weird and awkward.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,166 ✭✭✭Tasden

When people hear I work two jobs they always ask how much I get and say I must be rolling in it, I'm a single mother working two jobs because I'm not rolling in it! Its not really something id get offended by just a little awkward and embarrassed coz I don't earn a lot!

Your selection process for friends may need to be refined a little.

I used to think it was ok to tell friends and family. Then a very good friend and I were talking in the pub and he asked. I told him and he got visible upset. That pretty much changed my mind. He and others seemed to think I was on a lot less. To discover I earned his weekly wage in a day and a half really shocked him.
My family I thought were fine until my sister was commenting on my wage to her friend. Basically saying how could I possibly be worth the money and no wonder companies fail.
It is fine when you earn close to the other person.

Usually either go with "Not enough" or "Enough, I suppose" depending on my mood. Exact figure, apart from close family I normally wouldn't say just because what does it matter? Doesn't matter what I earn, what matters is if my bank account is showing a plus or a minus by the end of the month. If I'm earning enough to cover my expenses, then that's all that matters.

Only close friends and family. I have some friends who would earn way more than me. I will admit that I did have a little bit of jealousy but that's long gone. I must be getting wise or something.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,914 ✭✭✭✭tbh

I get, give or take, it works out at about, with expenses, about 140K a year, and I pay 30.3% tax on that, so its about a net 100K. And out of that 100K I run a house in Dublin, Castlebar, and Brussels.

I want to tell you something - try it sometime when you've a couple of cars and three houses and three homes and a few housekeepers and I want to tell you and everything else. But remember - its a well paid job. It's a well paid job.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,922 ✭✭✭hooradiation

"I don't know" is my usual answer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,145 ✭✭✭Katgurl

i occasionally tell my immediate family my daily rate if its in relation to them negotiating their own or something else relevant. I tell my dad because we have a financial agreement at the moment so I pay him what I can afford.

Friends - no chance. I've made that mistake and heard it bandied all about town.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭irishgirl19

Depending on who its coming from its such a rude question.
When i asked my da how much he gets he just says ah a garda wouldn't even ask me that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,150 ✭✭✭✭Malari

No-one's ever asked me. My boyfriend knows and my dad would have a rough idea. I don't think I'd really want to tell anyone else though, it's not really their business.

I've never been asked to be honest- if I was I wouldn't answer.

The only people who know are my mam, OH and best mate (and that's cos I work with her).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,113 ✭✭✭shruikan2553

I don't mind telling my family and friends how much I earn when I am working. The strangest was being asked about how much I earned in previous jobs when applying to dunnes. I don't know if many places do this but I felt like it really was none of their business, they knew where I worked and what I did so what more could they want.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

Nobody really asks, but when they do I say "I get paid enough to live on, but not enough for what I do" :P
