Just spotted this on Gamestop's Facebook page:
Great news for Nintendo 3DS XL owners.
If you register your new 3DS XL on Nintendo's Club Nintendo website before January 15th, you get to choose 1 of 5 games to download for free.
The games include Super Mario 3D Land, Freakyforms Deluxe, New Art Academy, "Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask" and Style Boutique.
The game you choose will then be available to download throughout January 2013.

Not too bad.... I'll wait to see the T&Cs before I get too excited though (especially the purchase window for the console itself).

You can download between Jan 1st and 15th. Not too shabby.
Also applies to those who bought the console from launch.

Nice! :) I'd probably get either Freaky Forms or New Art Academy, anyone here own them and can offer recommendations?

NAA is very good, but you need to put the work in. The pictures never turn out exactly like the originals. :)

    So just XL owners?

The only interesting ones to me seem to be the Super Mario 3D Land. I don't have 3DS XL unfortunately though! :(

Had a 3ds xl with mario already ordered, hope it's not too late to cancel.

    edit: Yep too late

That's pretty cool but I have the 2 games that interest me (Layton and Mario) what are the other 3 like? Freaky Forms looks like the only one that is half decent.

Free is free so either way it's pretty good for you! :D I plan to purchase one in December so hopefully the offer will still be valid. I'll be picking Mario. :)

    Press release on Joystiq :
    http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/28/nintendo-offers-free-eshop-games-to-3ds-xl-owners-in-europe/
So it's for all 3DS-XL owners, points have to be registered anytime from launch till Jan 15th to get a download code, with game code to be claimed via the eShop in January (1st-31st).
    Edit : Official site:
    http://microsite.nintendo-europe.com/3DSXLGamesPromotion/termsENG.html

If anyone has an XL, doesn't want the free game and hasn't registered their points I'd be happy to take this terrible burden off your hands :)

What game did you pick? I'm so buying a 3DS XL soon. Are the 3DS Xl's pre-loaded with Mario kart on sale yet? I've seen tv adverts for it.

I think the deal might be gone; it wouldn't have come with the charger though.

Can someone tell me how this works, going to order 3DS XL for my son for Christmas and if I can get Mario 3D Land downloaded for free I'll get a different game. Thanks in advance :)

Hey Josie! :) Basically when you purchase the 3DS XL, You'll get a card with a code in it (The card will contain a set of digits) You will simply log onto Club Nintendo site (I think it's the UK one for Ireland/UK) And register an account with your details and such and when you register the code you'll be given a choice to select one of the 5 games. In your case, Mario! :)

Basically every Nintendo console or game comes with a club nintendo code that gives you points. It comes on a red slip and you scratch off the silver bit to get the code.

You would then go onto http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/club_nintendo/product_registration.jsp and Join Club and fill out the info to sign up. You can then register the code on the site, just follow the link on the site, input the code and fill out a short survey. The product is then registered and you get points. When you do this with 3DS XL an option should become available saying something like claim you free game (it will be located somewhere on the home page). Click on that that and select your game and you'll be e-mailed a code to claim your game. It must be registered by Jan 15th and can be claimed until the end of January

Please don't be. You redeem the code in the E-Shop on the 3DS. It shouldn't take to long to download depending on your connection! :) Enjoy... :D

Not quite, the 3ds has wireless so you need to have a wireless router and connect it to the internet through that. The eshop will be an option on the 3ds screen :).

Worth mentioning that downloaded titles appear on the 3ds menu as little presents that you click on to open and reveal the game. Also, you can set the download for "sleep mode" so you can enter the shop, put in the code for the game and then exit the shop. The download happens whenever the 3ds is closed with WiFi switched on and a network available. When the download completes there's a popup notifier the next time the 3ds is opened- you can't download till January but it could still be a little new year extra from Santy?

Thinking of trading up for a 3DS XL. How much would I get for trading in a 3DS towards it?

If you are trading up go to Smyths, they will give you a better trade price over Gamestop or HMV. Or sell you 3DS on Adverts.

Registered mine and selected Super Mario 3D Land, any idea when the codes will be emailed out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

I got the code about 24-48 hours after I registered. Still can't be used until January 1st.

How long is the code? I got the email and there seems to be a 6 character code. The 3DS seems to want all characters filled in. I tried adding spaces after but it is not accepted. Where is the code in the email? Is it the bit that I blocked out below?
Thank you once again for registering your Nintendo 3DS XL system. As promised, here is your very special gift: a download code for Freakyforms Deluxe Your Creations!

    ******

However, you can't redeem this code yet! Please wait until January 1st, 2013 and then head to Nintendo eShop to claim your free download game. Don't worry if you forget, we'll remind you closer to the time - in the meantime, keep this email safe!

Friend didn't want his so gave it to me and got Super Mario 3D Land :D
Really awesome game, i see what all the hype is about! haven't had this much fun with any other game in years, up to world 4 at the moment :)

Definitely should be longer! think its around 15/16....not 6 anyway :P
Drop customer service a message and ask them to sort it out, such a hassle tho :o

Exactly same happened to me with my code for Freakyforms Deluxe Your Creations! it's too short, we better contact the Nintendo Service Centre

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,135 ✭✭✭fifth

Yep mine was much longer than that for Super Mario 3D land!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

The code is 16 characters long. I got Layton, but I still have to finish The Spectre's Call so I've not launched the new one yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭kc66

Did anyone manage to contact Nintendo? I filled in the contact form twice and when it is submitted the next page is not found. Had to email them last week about a separate thing and it was working (still havent got a response to that).

Eh, how is this working? I reg'd my XL when I bought it in August on release.
Am I exempt from this free game?

I was under the impression that it was open to everyone who had reg'd their XL from August to the end of January?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,693 ✭✭✭Deano7788

No you can get it as well. When you log onto your club nintendo account there should be something about selecting your free game.

Anyone have any codes they don't want? Also, are the codes linked to the device?
