My first Bargain alert thread so be kind :pac:

    Google Nexus 7 32GB Wi-Fi

Nexus 7 from Google™ is thin, light and portable, so it's perfect for carrying around and using on the go. You'll get access to a choice of 600,000+ apps and games, millions of eBooks and thousands of movies – all will be perfect for your new tablet.
    Designed for comfort and portability.
Nexus 7 from Google has been designed so it can be used all day. It's light at only 340g, so it won't tire your arms out, small so it's easy to carry around, and the shape, with a curved and textured back, have been chosen for comfort. The 7" display makes this all possible. With ultra sharpness and beautiful colours thanks to an IPS screen, ASUS TruVivid technology with Corning® Fit Glass and a 1280 x 800 HD resolution, it's ideal for movies and photos, as well as web chats using the 1.2MP front facing camera.
The first Android™ 4.1 Jelly Bean device.
As the first device to run the brand new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, the Nexus 7 from Google is state of the art. Jelly Bean has been designed to eliminate lagginess, so everything is faster, smoother and crisper. Slide your finger on the screen and Nexus 7 from Google will predict where you're going, making your experience seamlessly fast. Want more widgets on your homescreen? Widgets are automatically rearranged and even resized.
    There's more from Jelly Bean.
And that's not all. There's also offline voice typing, a super intelligent keyboard that'll predict your next word and a smarter, more advanced Notifications app. A beautiful and fast new voice-based Google Search gives you a digital assistant. Ask questions and you'll get digital cards displaying relevant information, and even voiceovers to tell you the answers to your queries.
The first 7" tablet with a quad core processor.
Portability now doesn't have to compromise on performance. Combining the new Jelly Bean OS with the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad core processor gives you flawless speed and response times, no matter what you're doing. So that's watching HD content, playing super fast HD games and epic multitasking.
    Made for Google Play.™
Google Play unifies all of Google's content – apps, books and movies – and Nexus 7 from Google is the perfect partner as the two were made for each other. With the portability of a book it's always with you, yet with extreme power it can handle everything. Have every app you need at your fingertips, carry your whole book library with you and be able to look at your complete media library whenever you want. Games? With all the power, screen clarity and motion sensors you'll need, any game you want is with you.
    Battery life.
Have power all day thanks to the 4325mAh battery inside Nexus 7 from Google. It's good for 9.5 hours* of active use, so that's games, videos or planning your diary. Worried about the quad core? NVIDIA's Tegra 3 has a fifth 'companion core' that uses less power than the four main cores. This smaller core takes over when your Nexus 7 is doing basic tasks, like writing emails or web surfing, saving battery power for when you need it most.
Looking for a tablet that's ultra fast, super portable, boasts the very latest state of the art software and is the ideal app machine? Nexus 7 from Google could be your ideal tablet partner.
'Android, Google, Google Play and other marks are trademarks of Google Inc.'
    * 9.5 hours battery life tested playing 720p video, brightness at 100nits, external microphone, Wi-Fi turned on and logged in to Gmail.

    Good deal

It can be delivered to Parcel motel however your billing address must be a UK billing address and probably needs a UK Credit Card unless theres someway of bypassing this

Use the PM address as your default delivery address.

    OOS unfortunately.

I got two 16Gb Nexus direct from google play for £327 delivered (around €400) using PM as my delivery address and billing address. I had to use tunnelbear to order it but seems to have worked and definitely cheaper than buying direct.

I haven't been able to find any 16GB units in Ireland to compare the price.

The 32GB Nexus is £199 from the Play store before delivery costs which is about €245. They're €249 in PC World here (and I think they're €239 in HMV) so there's nothing to be gained by buying the 32GB from the Play store as far as I can tell.

Don't see the 16gb here too much. I've seen it in hn and pc world for 249 up to recently. It's 200 sterling on amazon so for someone not looking to spend 250 or close to it the play store is good value for the 16gb model.

You don't (or never used to) get the voucher until you pay, so it's still €239.99.

If its books mainly, then just go for the Kindle. The screens on the ebook readers are fantastic, as good as if not better than reading an actual book. No strain for reading for hours on end. However once you go towards the Kindle Fire, which is actually a tablet, and all other tablets, you're in the realm of LCD screens, which are nowhere near as good for long term reading. Battery life is worse, reading from them isn't nearly as good or as easy on the eyes, they're heavier to hold up in one hand when in bed, you need to use the other hand to swipe to the next page, etc.
So my advice would be to get the regular Kindle which is now €82 if she likes reading, and look at tablets separately for internet etc. because they're not in the same league for reading. Even the iPad with it's excellent 326dpi resolution screen isn't as good for reading as the ebook readers.

I just bought the 16gb version of this on Vikingdirect (here) for €179. Seemed a great price.

They're selling the 32gb version for €246 which is a little steep.

At this price its a great deal, the best price I have seen for the 32gb was the carphonewarehouse at £179 = €222 and they have even taken the nexus off their .uk site, also I was up north and visited about 4 shops in belfast and none had stock...The next cheapest for the 32gb is €240 in argos and they have none in stock and their voucher deal has ran out...So if you think an extra 16gb of storage is worth €60 try and book one for delivery in argos, otherwise this is the best deal (having been holding on to get 2 for a few weeks and missing every deal, I had to jump on this, thanks!)

Anyone got any suggestions for comparable tablets that have a HDMI out port? I'd be all over the Nexus 7 otherwise but I really need a HDMI for hooking up Sky Go to the TV.

I didn't think Sky Go was available on any tablet other than iPad at the moment? I know it's available on certain Android phones.

Unless you can find a work around this isn't really going to be an issue as Sky go won't output over HDMI due to licencing issues.

Sorry I mean Sky Anytime; I've been running it from a laptop via HDMI to the TV and its been going fine - I assumed it'd be the same for a tablet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,814 ✭✭✭BaconZombie

You would want to check that Sky have not disabled stream when external display is connected!

I know the HBO and other apps do not allow it.
Also you can get a MHL to HDMI cable for ~5e on DealExtreme.

The N7 doesn't support MHL to HDMI though.
    Google wrote:
The shipping build of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean doesn't support the Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) which would allow it to double as an HDMI port, nor advanced USB On-The-Go (OTG) functionality.

There is a workaround for the USB OTG once rooted but not for MHL as far as I know.

I don't think thats true, the 16GB N7 is still on the play store in the US and UK. Plus, I don;t think it is an "old model" as such, the only difference afaik, was the change in storage capacity.

The price for the 16gb N7 off viking is very tempting indeed, think I'll take the plunge soon enough.. As well one of thos free gifts is a €15 topaz gift card which is of €15 value if use it for fuel! So its a 16gb N7 for €165 really! :) Scratch that, I see you'd nee fto spend €200 for that topaz gift card.. :(

I think you are being a tad optimistic there. Dont stay around work waiting.

I ordered last night but rang them this morning and they informed me that they are expecting delivery on the 19th December.

Hopefully they will be able to expedite them and hopefully there isnt some other delay but the chances of getting them this week is slim enough imo.

I just called them and they said I definitely won't have it tomorrow as it has to come in from the UK. Knew something would go wrong! I asked would I have it in time for Christmas and they said Please God! Won't be holding my breath. They said to phone back tomorrow. Will cancel my order if its not on its way by then.
