There's not much depth to the characters beyond "We're nerds".
It also has that usual TV trope about the dateless character that still seems to be able to get women.

    Nope. I hate it.

Nope, I hate it too but not as much as I hate Two And A Half Men, that was/is brutal.

Humour is subjective. I get the jokes, I just don't think they're funny.

It's about as funny as this post.

    Which is very unfunny indeed.

The same kind of people that like Mrs. Brown Boys probably like it.

It's terrible. A lot of shows these days seem to get an easy ride because they're American, and they had a period of about 10-15 years not so long go when they really did produce some gold. Shows like BBT and 'How I met your mother' have ridden that wave which has blinded people.

American TV shows give me a headache anyway.
The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother have the same look to them as Friends did in the fecking 90's. That weird grainy, washed out look and it just pisses me off!

Friends, Married With Children, That 70's Show and The US Office are the only decent comedies to come out of America IMO. British comedy is better IMO, Inbetweeners, Peep Show, Only Fools and Horses, The Royle Family, Skins, Early Doors, etc.

I can't believe some people like it.

I love comedy, from Friends to Red Dwarf, From Only Fools to Blackadder.
Of the modern American comedies they only one that gets the odd laugh is King of Queens.

There's a lot of great contemporary American comedy, you just have to look for the wheat among the chaff. Shows like Parks and Recreation, It's Always Sunny, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Community and Louie. Lovely wheat.

One of the funniest shows on TV in my opinion but it's totally subjective. I think "The Office" is one of the least amusing things ever screened both the US and British versions leave me cold as does "The Thick Of It" which most of my friends howl at.

I don't think it's the kind of show you sit down and watch. It's something you have in the background while cooking waiting for something decent to come on.

It's a good enough soundtrack with some witty nods to the world of science if you like science. However it's just another sitcom that hit a niche and they'll run it into the ground until a main character quits or does a Charlie Sheen.

I watch it, I've always hated penny. Think she's useless as an actress. She annoys the hell out of me. I don't know why I watch it, I hate most of the characters.

Arrested development, now there's a show I could watch over and over!

Oh god I hate it so much!
My husband insists on watching it. It couldn't be any more unfunny if it tried.
It's fcuking pseudo funny sh1t for pseudo intellectuals.
It acts as though it's intelligent, but it's just not.
Most of the 'intellectual' parts in it show that the writers mustn't actually understand the topic, and all they do is phrase basic concepts using elaborate wording.
And none of it is even remotely funny.
I understand humour is subjective - But it's about as funny as watching the kettle boil.

I thought Arrested Development was good.

Recently I've leaned more towards animation. Archer and Venture Brothers mostly. Some people can't get their head around animation though. Growing up there was always an attitude that Sci-Fi and animation were children's programmes. Adults watched the stuff that Dave now shows the re-runs of.

I don't find a lot of what my folks' generation like(d) funny. I'll take what I hope is an educated guess and point out Mrs Browns Boys as an example. It was never aimed at me though, so I'm not too fussed about it. I enjoy a good rant though.

It's a different kind of program. You want a progressive story, go watch Weeds, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Walking Dead or some serialized shyte like that. Nobody sits through every episode of Seinfeld expecting meaningful character development. Sheesh.

Never into it. It's kind of like a show some retards I used to know would watch and highlight a blatantly obvious (bad) joke and what it meant and then speak a laugh. You know the laughs where they're not actually laughs but people will say haha? them sort. Two and a half men retard audience kind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,661 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

I still like it a lot,an original theme with likeable well developed charactors and slightly dark humour. Some people take one look at it and lump it in with all the other crap that's on I suspect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭D_D

Arrested Development is, and always will be, the greatest TV show ever to come out of America.

I've watched all three seasons about four times over already, and Is till find new jokes and laugh at the old ones.

    Great TV show.

And the Big Bang Theory is utter tripe. It's pandering to a 'lost' demographic of so called 'nerds'... "They play XBox, I play XBox! I am just like them..." and then they laugh at terrible jokes because they can 'relate' to them.

I imagine the people who like the show also like the following anohhorent ****e -

    Katherin Lynch
    Maeve Higgins
    Michael McYntire
    Two and a Half Men
    King of Queens
    Everyone Loves Raymend
The one with the two obese people in it

For someone to like these, they have to have some really redeeming characteristics for me to be able for them. I know a few people who like some of them, and luckily they've a lot of positives to outweigh these negatives.

Anyway, no the show isn't funny. It's awful.

Edit - Just wanted to agree with someone above, Arrested Development is fantastic in terms of that category of sitcom - however the best comedy = Curb Your Enthusiasm, there's no denying it's the smartest, most well written comedy to come out of America.

Obviously this is all subjective, and your sense of humour doesn't really mean I would find you to be any less of a person, I've a lot of friends who like all of the above, we just don't talk about it because I'd have nothing to ad.

In it's category of modern easy-watching US sitcoms, it's probably the best.

The best thing going for big bang theory is Sheldon

No, I dont like any of the shows in your list there but i do like TBBT.
Curb and Arrested Development are a different category to TBBT. They dont have canned laughter. Interestingly i dont like How I met your mother. Or 2 Broke Girls.

    Do you like Fraiser?

Big Bang Theory for me is somewhat amusing at times but for the most part, recycled jokes that wear thin quickly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

The only thing that annoys me about the show is Sheldon. I don't get why anyone likes him, given that his character has no redeeming characteristics whatsoever.

Other than that, the show is just white noise really. If there's absolutely nothing better on then I'll throw it on in the background while on the net, might get the odd chuckle out of it on rare occasions.

Each to their own I guess. It's ratings speak for themselves at the end of the day.

sure if this will be a dig at me, but I can tolerate Frasier, even Friends I find can be quite funny - that may be because I grew up with it though.
