You can catch the pee pipe instead of the pipes going into the nuts I believe

I thought the rod was internal and the testes obviously external along with most of the spermatic cord. I didn't think it was too easy to grab the rod instead of the cord?

In cattle where the liathróidí hang down well (like Fresians) it is very unlikely you will catch the rod. You can feel the rod above the liathróidí. With cattle like Limousin cattle, where the liathróidí are tight to body you could catch the rod. The vet always pulls one liathróid down and puts the burdizzo on the cord. Before he closes he checks rod is not present then squeezes burdizzo.

I'm no expert but i saw a weanlin swell up and keel over after getting squeezed before and that was the reason i got for it

Capercaille above is exactly right, if you castrate enough of them with a burdizzo eventually you will notice one or two where the penis can be felt in close proximity to the top of the scrotum where you would be closing burdizzo. Combination of poor anatomical locations of penis and testicle. If care is not taken with these guys you could close the burdizzo on the penis.

Thanks for that. I've castrated more than my fair share and for several neighbours too. I've never noticed that yet. But I always make sure to pull down the plums well.
No doubt I'll see it soon after it being mentioned here!

Did it hurt much when you got yours done?

What would u charge if you had to do it for lads?

Young lad is fairly good at it for a bunch of 20 dairy weanlings with good faculities he be happy with 60-80 euro.
Didn't intend that to sound like I was commenting on your own facilities. I was speaking more in general terms. If can get through them that fast consider asking your vet for an hourly rate. Most people don't like hourly rates in Ireland as the tradition is to charge per animal for everything, dehorning, castrating, testing, scanning, hoof-paring etc. Outside of Ireland charging per 10 minute block is more common. If you're set up very well you might be better off on hourly rate. But most vets have traditionally done what the client wanted and that mostly is per animal. On some farms you could be waiting around a long time to get animals separated from cows to castrate them. Hourly rate there and lads go bananas. You can't please everyone unfortunately but you might see if you could get an hourly rate seeing as you are set up well.

In general vets do not do hourly rates. Few enough lads now mess with having vets waiting around etc. The reason lads dehorn and castrate them selves is that it adds to big money to get a vet as we see with OP. However lots of lads that get the vet do so on the presumption if anything goes wrong you have a comeback a bit like an insurance policy.

However I have seen a vet squeeze bulls and he did each side twice. This can be hard on cattle

Not long farming myself but ya I'm gonna have to start doing them myself. Will have to get a burdizzo and some one on the tail. Never shown how to do it but I've an idea from seeing vet. Might not be keeping bull calves at all in a year or two so could be a wasted expense.

Get someone to show you. A young lad to hold and hand you the burdizzo is handy as well

If found in time the animal can be saved by surgery.

You'd be surprised about that. Every farm is different. Some people don't even have them separated from cows when you arrive, nevermind the heifer calves. Others you just have a pen of 20 bull calves ready to run up the crush. There is HUGE variation in how prepared people are. Charging per 10mins as I would have done in Canada/UK meant that didn't happen as often. I know that's not the tradition here and most people commenting here are not the type to be disappearing for 20mins to get a different group of cattle from a back field etc but it does actually happen.
