Joe Ward totally outclassed his Hungarian opponent winning all 5 rounds on each of the judges cards.

John Joe Nevin currently tied at 2 rounds each with Stankovic, going into the final round

Edit: JJ Nevin loses a split decision. Stankovic definately did enough to take it unfortunately.

Nevin made a very good change of mind to stay amateur this probably proves it

Nevin fighting at lightweight for this tournament aswell. Very significant jump in weight in such a short space of time.

I was going to mention this. Nevin fought here at 61kg (around one stone heavier than he normally fights) to accomodate Andrew Selby at 54kg. That's a huge jump, especially in the amateurs where there's so little between the top guys at ANY weight.

seems a very poor decision to adjust to accomodate selby.

Another WSB team would gladly have Nevin i'd imagine.

Nevin is limited at lightweight, never mind in this WSB format.

Don't think it has anything to do with Selby. He was already 61kg last season in the WSB, and when he was 54kg in the first season, he had trouble making the weight.

Well I agree he had trouble making 54kg for certain matches (semis), but he fought at that weight and won comfortably in the final last year. I don't recall him fighting at 61kg at any stage though.
And if you think of it, a British team boxing at home (Wales) is more likely to have it's Welsh fighters fighting, especially one as good as Selby.

Edit: I think I might be referring to the first year of WSB now that I think of it. Is this the third year?

The WSB has been two years going ; 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. I don't think Nevin has ever fought at the bantamweight division for the tournament. He has been a LW fighter for the two years. Maybe I could be wrong.

    That's this year's listing.
He most definitely fought at bantam the first year and was only beaten once and won his bout in the final easily. It's last year I'm not 100% about, but either way, he's not close to being a natural lightweight, so I suppose it's obvious his team rate him very highly to put him in at that weight.... a lot higher than plenty on here seem to rate him.

But isn't bantam 54 kgs for the WSB? Nevin has been at 56 kgs the past few years in Ireland. Was he dropping 2 kgs for the WSB in its first year?

Edit: He was bantam for the 1st season. Must have been tough dropping them 2 kgs.

It is 54kg in the WSB and that's why he had problems making the weight (as far as I know he missed the semis the first year) but he still fought aprox. 5-6 times losing only once - not bad for someone struggling to make weight in a format many believe doesn't suit him.

Agreed, and I'd say he'll get stronger as the season goes on. The jump from 56 to 61 is huge, so it might just take time for him to adjust to it, rather than him being too small for 61kg. Does anyone know if he's planning on moving up to lightweight for the next Olympics?

Some Irish in action this weekend again in the WSB

The British Lionhearts take on The German eagles. There will be Irish interest on both teams.

David Oliver Joyce (representing German Eagles) will take on the Lionhearts Sam Maxwell.

Joe Ward (Lionhearts) will take on Satula Abdulai. Joe was originally scheduled to face the very impressive (and undefeated in all his 5 WSB contests) Kevin Künzel, but Kunzel has withdrawn with an injury.

Eric Donovan just beat the guy who beat JJ Nevin in the last round of the WSB.

Now that Nevin is at 60 Kgs can we expect him to meet DOJ and/or Donovan?

i'm not sure how the fixtures line up, but I don't see why not.

Each team has a couple of guys at the same weight though, so not sure how it will work.

The WSB site does preview upcoming bouts, but nothing too far into the future, and I see no mention of them clashing yet.

Donovan gives JJ Nevin a hell of a scrap in this format.

His fight against the Serb was very good, was never a huge fan of Donvan to be honest, but he has a nice style for this. Stood and traded aswell and came off the better more often than not.

You don't beat Donovan easy. He is a stylish boxer. Plus, naturally that bit bigger than Nevin. No surprise if Donovan beat him. I think Nevin beats DOJ. Bull vs. Matador; matador wins

I think this is a brilliant format, allowing some of the top amateurs to face off in pro-like contests. There are no easy fights unlike the pro's where you will be spoon fed bums for your first 10-15 fights. Its really sink or swim.

Some of the guys who were decent if unspectacular at amateur level can show alot more promise than some of the top class amateurs.

David Oliver Joyce won an extremely hotly disputed split decision against Sam Maxwell.

Joe Ward wins every round en route to a 4th round stoppage against his German opponent.

    Very dominant performance

Sean Turner was meant to be fighting there as well, but he's out because of the cuts from his last fight I think, so that's probably who they meant.

I recorded the action. Saw bits of Ward. Did he look a wee bit sloppy? He seems to really overextend himnself when throwing the left hand.
