Cycling and asthma

    So I've had asthma most of my life, developing it when I was in my early teens and it gradually getting worse as I got older.

    I've never really been into sports, and although I am thin (I never had a huge appetite), I am pretty unfit. Really unfit even.

    For about 15 years I did horse riding, sometimes doing a few times a week. However, I never did anything too strenuous, only now and then doing a bit of cross country (which I would be pretty breathless after!). In August I rehomed my horse and haven't continued with the riding.

    So after finishing college and a bad breakup I have noticed that I am doing nothing at home, just sitting on my ass all day and I think I have put on some weight.

    So the last week or so I have started cycling. There's a lot of hills around my area, only small runs of flat parts, so everyday I have been cycling up a hill, and then following that up by going up and down the flat parts to kind of cool off. So far, the hill has be dying, and taking breaks because of leg pain or asthma. But I've noticed the flat bits are getting easier.

    I've no idea about fitness in general, so just looking for some advice on the best way to approach cycling when I'm so unfit and quite asthmatic. Should I keep at my routine, and just wait for it to get easier?

    Is cycling a good exercise for asthma sufferers? I can't really run, as this usually brings on bad wheezing. The idea of a gym doesn't appeal to me (and I can't quite afford one right now).
