I think you would have to favour Flintoff . It would be bad tv if he loses.I think his opponent was chosen as someone he could/ would beat.

I enjoyed the show. The second part is next Thursday. Flintoff is very average. Big man, but a complete novice, as expected. Whoever he fights will be threat. Assuming fairly equal size, any pro with any experience and pedigree would be far too much for Flintoff.

If you think he'd last more than 30 seconds with Wlad then your Boxing knowledge is zero!!

I am assuming they are picking an absolute tomato can for Flintoff. But, even if he's a can, if he's a big man with any shape or skill in throwing shots then Flintoff could be in trouble.

They'll probably take less risk than that and just give him Audley Harrison.

Nah, I was taking the Michael .I presume this will be this one and only ever fight. No world title fights for Freddie

This is his opponent , Richard Dawson

and it is 4 2 minute rounds

It's his first ever fight, and he is not a boxer. Give him a break!

This looks like a great idea for a show as I am hoping that Freddie will be able to do it.

He is getting unreal training and with the hard work I think he may have a chance.

He is on the "caveman" diet and has seen great results after ten weeks. Can anyone point me in the direction of this and more importantly how effective it is for weight loss and putting on muscle. Personal experience would be great.

    Thanks.

I have no problem with 2 minute rounds, but it shouldn't be considered a pro fight. Professional men's boxing has 3 minute rounds, women's boxing has 2 minute rounds. Maybe it should be marketed as a women's fight.

It's his first fight yes but if he's getting into the ring as a pro well then he is a boxer.

Personally I think he should of went and got a few bouts at amateur level instead of jumping head first in as a pro.

Hope he does well. Seems like a decent lad.

Paleo diet. Nothing special about it. It stipulates that you shouldn't eat dairy, sweets, soft drinks, fruit juices, factory farmed meats and grains. Fad diet. Nothing wrong with it, but there's easier ways to get in shape without following an arbitrary list of foods.

Men's fights of 2 minute round duration are fought week in week out over in England. Yes it's usually the less talented (or seen to be less talented) guys that start off like this, but it's a fairly common occurrence, and that's in guys who've had amateur careers.

2 minute round fights are common in Sweden aswell due to the restrictions on how long fighters can fight for in that country.

Sweden have an interesting stance towards boxing, they only lifted the ban in 2007. More lenient than their Norwegian friends who have banned it altogether, along with North korea and Cuba.

A lot of very young pros start with two minute rounds. That's a regular thing in England at least.

True. Just irritates me that Flintoff is getting so much exposure and still only does 2 minute rounds. Bit of a freakshow.

Fine boxing is not in decline. TV figures are a myth (Outside the top PPV fights)

    Viewership has collapsed

It has never been a popular sport. There's always been a few stars who have captured the imagination of the public (Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tyson, Mayweather to some extent) but it quite simply is, and always will be, a niche sport.

I think it's a bit too popular for it to be called a niche sport.

But wasn't a point made that it is declining. It was a hell of a lot more popular in previous eras. At least it seemed to be. It was never a niche sport. In the 50s and 60s it was a top sport. Only NFL and MLB really bettered it in America.

I have figures to prove its not declining if you're interested I can root them out later? The figures show as many people participate in boxing now as did at any other time (study was done in the UK I think). I think its safe enough to assume participance correlates with viewership.

I also know of an article from the 1930s that I can probably root out that says boxing is dying, and I own a Ring magazine from 1954 that says boxing is dying. It's something that was always said and never proven IMO.

    Who's the owl fella now?

Eras change as well as the actual sport. Poupulation, availability, technology and media all have drastically changed thru the years making it very difficult to accurately compare the popularity of the sport thru the eras.

BTW, root out them figures please.

The greatest sportsman in the works used be the Heavyweight Champion- how many regular Joes even know who that is now?

If you don't believe professional boxing has been on a step decline then I don't know what to say.

Remember when fights used to be on BBC and ITV primetime?

Sky show them on a brief window on a Friday and C5 show a few.

Boxing used never be a niche sport with the viewing public- perhaps now it has

Ali transcended Sport, He lived in an era of great political and Cultural upheaval and he became an important political and cultural figurehead who was not afraid to speak his mind with authority, charisma and charm that people would listen to. His greatness as a sportsperson gave him this platform

The fights ,if they were televised, in the 60's, and even up to the 70's 80's, early 90's? would have captured a much bigger audience because there were so few channels back then. Today there is cable tv with millions of channels, the internet , x videos.com. Consumers are awashed with an ever increasing choice of viewing . I think a snooker final between Dennis taylor and Steve Davis had 18 million viewers back in 1985.

Boxing isn't in decline , it just not as viewed by as many people.

If the Klitschko's brothers were from GB or U.S.A ( the two biggest markets) , everybody in the world would know their name and millions of of pre-teen girls would have a poster of a topless Vladamir in his red trunks on their wall !

Ali cheated on his wife, beat his wife, bullied and exploited Joe Frazier, humiliated Ernie Terrell, pretended to have morals, promoted racial segregation and dodged the army draft for selfish reasons. Poor excuse for an individual really.

He was charismatic, I'm not doubting that. But he was also a scumbag. They're not mutually exclusive. Your image of him is a result of admiring his charisma and believing the rubbish the media propagated about him being a man "taking a stand".

    Define a scumbag?

BTW, could you provide a source for the wife beating claims? Are these the SRR claims about Ali?

And he did take a stand. That is nothing to do with media propogation. He took a stand. Gave up a whole lot for that stand. The world finding out that he took a stand is media propogation.

Yup, SRR witnessed it. Also, the Qur'an (Islamic Bible as such) countenances wife beating: As to those women on whose part you fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly).

    From: http://www.muslimaccess.com/articles/Women/wife_beating.asp

Nope. Ali didn't give a damn about the war. Why would he want to go and risk his life when he was at the apex of his career, making money and enjoying fame? The first time he was called by the army he said he didn't want to go. When they contacted him again the Muslims told him to say he wouldn't go for moral reasons. Ali had an IQ in the 70s. DO you honestly think he knew the first thing about what was going on in the war lol.

Source: Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times by Thomas Hauser. There's a documentary on Youtube with a Muslim speaking saying he used to ring Ali to tell him what to say to the press. Which brings me to another point. Joe Frazier supported Ali's draft dodging and actually financially supported him throughout his ban from boxing, then Ali threw it back in his face and called him an uneducated gorilla.

Sorry if I destroyed your childhood hero.

Ernie refused to acknowledge the man's name. Desreved his "ring" beating.

SRR says he witnessed it. Did Ali admit to it or ever get charged for it? Not sure I am ready to believe this.

Frazier certainly got in a lot of his own venom. Ali was far from perfect. I know this. He could be mean and crule and take things too far.
