What exactly is the module made up of?

If it's a 100% continuous assessment module and you cannot compensate for it then you can either do something set by the lecturer (ie: a report or a test) or you have a carry fail which you carry through to the following academic year.

A carry fail effectively means you take on an extra subject the year after the one you failed. Last year I failed a module, couldn't compensate so this semester I have 7 modules instead of 6.
