Titans to give the Jags a serious pasting this week

Must win game for Chicago for standings and divisional matchups. NFC North is still anyones game at this stage( bar the Lions)

Useless stat: Since 2008, the Bears are 5-1 in games immediately following a loss of at least 21 points

God i hated that play, Chargers were on a great comeback and had just put together a very nice drive to get to that position. Great play though

    But a cracking SNF game.

    I like the look of:
Bills v Colts, should be a shootout with playoff implications.
Redskins v Cowboys: Must-win for the Redskins and RGIII is must-see TV at the moment
Atlanta v Tampa could be interesting, but the Falcons have such a large lead in the division.
49ers v Saints, Brees against the vaunted 9ers D and get to have a closer look at Cupaernick (sp?) big call from Harbaugh there.
Packers v Giants, Rematch of the divisional game from last year. Giants can't afford to lose this as well?

Thursday and MNF games have been very poor last few years. My guess is that ESPN/NFL will try to address MNF options. It's the flagship program and seems to have thrown up way too many awaful matchups recently.

@SI_JimTrotter: BREAKING: Jim Harbaugh has informed Alex Smith that Colin Kaepernick will start Sunday. Decision not based on health.

Love this if true. This is what great coaches do, make brave deicisions like this. At 7-2-1, too many coaches would play it safe, and stick with what's worked up to now.

I think the 49ers are the best team in the NFL, but my one reservation about them was, when they met better defenses in the playoffs, they'd need the QB to make plays, and I wasn't sure if Smith could do that. Kaepernick could be the guy who can.

I think Alex Smith is a pretty average QB, who's made to look a lot better than he is, by playing in a great team....best running-game in the league, best defense, and an offense designed to minimise his limitations. That works in the regular season, but not necessarily in the playoffs.

Kaepernick doesn't need to be brilliant to match what Smith is doing, but his upside is higher. So with the rest of the team playing so well, the risk is relatively small compared to the reward.

I don't think you are being very fair to Alex Smith here(never thought I'd see myself write those words!) because the guy is stuck in a system where he is not asked to throw the ball that often. To this point in the season he has a 70% completion rate, he has a 104 QB rating and his differential is pretty good with 13 tds to 5 ints.
Last season in the playoffs they let him loose against the Saints and he came up trumps, he had a 101 QB rating in the playoffs over the two games.
This year they let him loose against the Bills and again he came up trump, then he had a bad game against the Giants but everybody is entitled to one bad game.

Imo he is being held back by the offensive playbook. Kaepernick looked good in his first start but he didn't look so good when he came in for Smith the week before. We'll see how it goes but I'm not sure he is ready yet. I'm not sure he is the answer at QB for them.

I feel for Alex Smith as he has done nothing wrong and I feel that he should have been given more leash to hang himself if they felt they would go another direction. Thing is I think he would thrive given the opportunity to throw the ball more.

I always believed Smith wasn't good enough up until the playoffs last season. I now think he has a future in the NFL and I think the 49ers are making a big mistake here.

Agree completely with this. I don't understand why you would make the change midway through a season, that is going well, for a team with genuine Superbowl aspirations. Apart from the playing side, I wonder how it has gone down in the locker room or for team chemistry. (Bronco similar situation coming up!) I remember Shanahan benching Bubby Brister for Brian Griese and it destroyed the team chemistry (apparently) Again, I'm not saying this is the exact same, but why take the risk?

If it doesn't work out, you now have to go back to a QB you've tried to dump twice this year.

I think there in lies the answer, I'm not in anyway comparing Kaepernick to manning but Harbaugh already showed once this year that he doesn't consider Smith his guy.

So maybe for Jim it was an easy decision to drop him when Kaepernick showed what he can do in an NFL game.

I think he failed last year in the playoffs against the Giants. I think he failed this year against the Giants. And another game I watched fairly closely was against Seattle this year. The 49ers won that game but I left it thinking 'I'm not sure you can win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith'.

In that game, twice Frank Gore dragged them into the redzone with big runs. One one trip Smith threw an interception, on another they failed to convert and settled for a field goal. Also just before half-time, they got a big return to the 50. They just needed to go 15 yards to get a field-goal attempt before the time expired, and Smith couldn't do it. That was a lot of points left on the field. It didn't cost them in that game, but it would against a team with a better offense.

I think Alex Smith is ok to good, and we really haven't seen enough of Kaepernick to say if he'll be better or not. I just like the ambition to say that 'ok to good' maybe isn't good enough, and having the courage to make that change mid-season.

I wasn't following the NFL back then, but didn't Bill Belichick make a pretty similar decision in 2001 when he stuck with an unheralded 6th-round QB, ahead of his pro-bowl starter? That seems an easy decision in hindsight, but it struck me as a similarly brave decision at the time.

No the Brady thing was totally different. Bledsoe went down in the second game of the season and missed most of the year. Brady proved himself over pretty much a whole season. The controversy arose when Brady got injured against the Steelers in the playoffs and Bledsoe came in and played well. Belichick stuck with Brady though for the Superbowl.
