Sky Package prices increasing on 1st Feb 2013.

Was looking at my online account earlier. There's a note there stating that Sky Package prices will increase on 1st February 2013.

Wonder what sort of increase is on the cards? €5 for all premium packages maybe? A lesser amount for the Entertainment and Entertainment Extra packs?

Well someone has to pay for the ludicrous 70% increase in EPL costs for the next 3 seasons.
They certainly wont be getting any more money out of me .

Its currently 91 euro for the Sky World HD pack (overpriced by 50% in my opinion) how much more do they think they can screw out of people .They are almost as bad as our politicians who kept on inflating the housing bubble.

Sky's prices should be coming down if anything .
Five years ago people needed Sky/Cable to get the Irish and Uk Terrestrial channels in Digital quality .
You can now get a good Enigma 2 receiver for well under 200 euro that will give you a 7 day guide for Freesat and Saorview.
At least 70 decent channels in digital quality,pvr,timeshift,series link,radio channels,internet radio,for no annual costs.
Modern tv's have smart functionality too and you can download shows if you so please.
Sky has lost its edge,its codding itself .

Agree with Zardoz - Sky is no longer great value and even wall to wall soccer is no longer attractive - seems to prove the point that most games are poor. And any of the champions league games are all now available on terrestrial HD channels now so come Feb 1 it's time to say goodbye to Sky and considering I am paying €106 per month, in two months I'll have paid for the new box!!!

yes, we rarely watch movies. The kids channels we now have on a foreign package we have. Its just the sport channels that keep me. I certainly won't pay anymore for less than 10% of my viewing. (kids watch boomerang and Disney channel which we watch mostly on polish tv due to dual languages spoken in my family). The only thing ill miss is sky go. But im sure ill do without it.

We got that note as well this morning.

We only have the basic pack,,with the Nat geo,History,Discovery,,etc.. €33 a month.

Looks like We'll be getting rid of that.. No matter what sky offer,,no way is it worth any more. I'm afraid to think what people with the sports/movies/HD/Multi-Room are going to end up paying.

I have the basics, currently 25 a month. I will probably cancel if it goes up more than euro or 2. Will invest in decent freesat box and pay the few euro a month to access US Netflix via my ps3.

pay tv is only worth it for sports really. But I think that dog has had its day now. I wonder how the commercial rates will go?

I think it's going to start making people look at the illegal methods of getting their sports and movies.
For the price it can be got at,,more and more will think it's worth the risk.

yes its a shame, I love my football and sometimes because of the censorship we have in Ireland by not having certain matches on (like they do in mainland Europe away from the UK) I've found myself watching the odd stream here and there. Its amazinly easy to find good streams.

There's nothing dodgy about a Dreambox , can be used for receiving FTA channels , some people , as a hobby , can set them up to unscramble encrypted channels. Sky did take a case against someone in the UK who was doing this and Sky lost their case , but if anyone would like to know more about how they work then feel free to PM me.

Ahh yeah,,fair enough,and well done for taking it on..But if you check back through a lot of old threads regarding Dreamboxes on here,you'll see the Mods closed a lot of them.

the increase will probably be 1Euro pm, not too much that it will turn people away.
and probably another 1Euro increase in sept.

personally I'm not worried. as I ditched sky 4 or 5 yrs ago and got a freesst+ box.

between freesat and torrents, I've never been short of something to watch

Surely there's some sort of breach of contract on their behalf somewhere.

Well if there is an increase I'd imagine it'll only be for new customers. That way they wouldn't be breaking any contracts.

Cant remember if it was yourself or someone else who mentioned this in another thread a while ago but I never once seen Sky state that prices were frozen until any specific month in 2013. It was always 2013 that I seen

Existing customers can be ones who are in a 12 month contract or have signed up to some new package which puts them at day 1!

When i was renovating my house, i had two sat cables put into almost every room, and a multiswitch in the hot press.

People couldnt understand why, they all thought i was going mad by putting Sky+ into every room. When i explained about freesat i was given blank stares or was told that i would only get shopping channels.

Who's laughing now.
Free multi channel tv everywhere in the house.

I've no problem with sky, and i've no problem with people having it, but imo it is a complete rip off, considering that most of the channels watched are FTA.

It was on literature previously but now just seems to say 2013.Very suspicious.Even a link I found is now dead??

Rang Sky, spoke to an Irish person. It does apply to ROI accounts. Increase will be from 01.02.2013. Could not tell me increases. Letters will be sent out shortly (in the coming weeks)

Denied August 2013 for ROI though that date can be found in a few web searches but no official record of old offers found.

The closest I could find of "official" information on a Sky price is from here:

which is an archive of the main page from June 2011. It says there price freeze until 2013 with no mention of August. People may be confused with the date of the UK offer which ended August 2012 vs the Irish offer which ends in 2013.

which seems to be a copy and paste of an internal Sky document. Sky may have changed their mind before they went public with the offer. However I can find no other proof of that August 2013 date.

I use the entertainment package. Contacted sky by online chat. raised issue and this is the reply i got

It wont be a euro, Sky have to pay all those primadonnas that play in the EPL. It cost Sky 3 billion this time around for the EPL rights. Sky may well have a shock coming there way this time around. What with saorview and FTA the way it is.

Rang up sky to tell them to take off one of the boxes I have in a bedroom (have multiroom) as it was too expensive and all you show is adds and repeats. They said you can have it for free for a year ( the extra bedroom) reducing my bill by €15. Not sure whether this is happy days or if I've inadvertently agreed to another years contract. I'd imagine they're sneaky businessmen though

we moved house and stuck with freesat, missus was all worried about missing eastenders etc due to no rte until she now realises she watches everything via humax freesat+ box and we haven't looked back since. She has even realised all the UK channels.

Yeh that news as been around for a while, people are getting letters stating the increase at the moment.

Incorrect,Sky only have 2 'entertainment' packages,the bare bones one is currently €25 per month & Entertainment Extra ie. everything bar Sports/Movies/HD is €33 per month.

If the €2 increase is to be believed then prices in 2013 will be €27 for basic & €35 for Entertainment Extra.

Sports & Movies will probably see a similar increase.

Just downgraded my sky and got rid of movies and sports. Gone from €68 per month to about €28. Seems a hell of a drop.

Dont think ill miss it much because im watching more of the FTA UK channels and Irish DTT channels than anything else.

If they put up their prices any further in Feb I may just cancel it altogether.

They tried to offer me a 20% discount but it only took around €10 off, hardly worth it.

What was interesting was the lad on the phone told me that they had tons of calls all day with downgrades because of the budget!

No, not incorrect. When the packages changed over, I had basics plus kids channels, so as there was no price increase at that time, my basics with cartoons became the entertainment plus package, for which I am currently paying 25 euro a month. Even without the price increase my bill would have gone up to 33 when the price freeze ended.

Sorry,but your post didn't state that.

A lot of clever people who were on bare minimum packages upgraded by one package to take them over the threshold just before the new 2 package system kicked in,they essentially got channels for free but will be hit with a price hike of €10 when the price freeze ends.

I'd assume so,we had a half price deal @ €45.50 pm,renegotiated it on expiration & new deal is €53 a month.Dunno where they got the figure from but if €53 is half price then full price is a fairly substantial increase on this years price.

€76 for SkyWorld + €15 for HD = €91 Per month,an increase of €15 a month would be suicide by Sky.

Looks as though you're getting the SkyWorld at half price (€38) and you're paying the full amount for the HD (€15)

Got rid of the movies and sports 18 months ago then dumped sky all together last summer. lts not the end of the world folks - subscription movie channels are past their sell by date while the EPL is sub par compared to years gone by. Kick it all to the kerb and save yourself a small fortune.

With the amount of pain that Irish people are meant to be suffering in these recent years, I can't understand why $ky haven't been hammered with tens of thousands of cancelled contracts.

As poor as people are, so many seem to be able to find money for $ky.

I can understand, cause it's soooooo friggin hard to cancel :eek::mad:

From personal experience, it took me 3 phone calls, loads of phone credit & bucket loads of patience to finally cancel !!
It really is a joke how long they leave people waiting to get through to the 'cancellation' department, and it's actually designed that way on purpose.

cancel your direct debit. Sky will soon cancel you then. Write them a letter, that's best way. Keep a copy for yourself.
