Opening Bus Windows

What is it with some peoples obsession with opening bus windows in the middle of November and letting other passengers freeze their asses off?

Admittedly it wasn't a particularly cold night tonight, but it's hardly the middle of summer either, yet some neanderthal on my bus home from work decided to open the window and had everybody behind him shivering from the cold wind that was blowing in from it.

I got up and closed it after a short while but this knuckle dragger immediately opened it again and told me that he was roasting hot and if I had a problem with him opening the window then I was to sit down stairs.

I was going to get up and close it again but I noticed that this 'person' had tattoos covering both hands and I didn't particularly want to get my head kicked in over a poxy bus window. So I sat in the cold for 25 minutes mumbling under my breath :o

    Bus wanker!

Just messing, i too hate bus people and had the misfortune of travelling with a busload of them for a year before i finally gave in.

If you ever saw that device (captive bolt pistol) the guy uses in no country for old men.. I need one of them. Just to take care of inconsiderate people in general.

humans feel temperature differently, some people feel the cold more whilst some people feel the heat more, and some of us dont have temperature regulation at all,yay go us.:D
so its possible this person was feeling warm and like many humans he/she had opened the window without thinking of others as well, they coud have felt sick and needed fresh air.
they coud also have been a smoker on the bus who opened the window or others who opened it due to smoke.
or perhaps someone had to many sprouts the night before and was doing some serious farts that day.
or it coud be one of those boardsies who whinge about people with no awareness of their own stink having opened the window....like some crappy advert says, the possibilities are endless.

Opening windows on buses depends on the situation. Over all I would say the majority of people who do so are self-centred assholes. Not caring about other people on the bus.

Although there can be situations, mainly morning rush hour, were you have a packed bus being all stuffed up, a few people with the flu coughing all the time.... So I can't really blame someone for opening a window in this scenario.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

Because busses are nearly always stuffy and slightly too warm whenever the driver has the heating on.Even worse when it's raining and the bus is steamed up and stinks of mildew/condensation.

It was at around 8:30pm and there were around 6 people on the top deck including me and the ex-con.

It's also worth noting that it was one of those brand new buses that have massive windows......and WiFi :pac:

I think that it's safe to say that he was a selfish prick who was probably dying for somebody to rattle his cage.

    Sounds like it.

I am a bit partial to a bit of the auld window opening in winter myself though, but generally only if the windows are steaming up or it's stuffy. Ya know that wetness on the windows? That's the moisture from the other people on the bus (mostly from their breath). From around September to April there are endless colds going around. All that moisture is nasty germ containing horrors. And the air around you is also full of other peoples colds, just ready to attack you. Fresh air is a bloody good thing on buses full of people.

That said, if there are only 6 people on the top deck there's no need for it (unless it had just started its route and had just dropped an entire bus load of people off and the air hadn't had a chance to circulate and freshen up since). It does sounds like he was just provoking people for fun.

I remember years ago, I was about 6/7 months pregnant, and I opened the window because I was convinced I was going to faint.
Some self important oul b1tch got up immediately and closed it.
So I got up again and opened it.
She got up and closed it, turned to me and said "you're very rude you know, you should ask others if they mind if you open the window".
I just said to her that I was pregnant and felt like fainting.
She immediately looked embarrassed and muttered something and sat down and left the window open the rest of the journey.
This is a completely pointless story, I'm not sure I had a point to begin with, but I'm going to just post it anyway for no other reason than I spent the past two minutes typing it :)

Not wanting to go against the general grain of people on buses are **** but if there were only 6 people on the top deck, surely you could have just sat somewhere out of the breeze instead of yourself and everyone shivering behind him?

To get to the bus you must have gone outside. Surely you were dressed for cold weather OP?

I'd be on the side of the window opener, if he has a reason to open it it's up to him. Bit of fresh air is good for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,734 ✭✭✭Newaglish

I'm generally someone who is too warm in enclosed, centrally heated areas. This is because I'm fit and healthy, with proper circulation, unlike those exercise-avoiding purple-fingered permanently cold people who live in this country.

I've had days in the office where I can't physically work because of the unbearable heat, even in Winter, and I'm of the opinion that there should be a window open in a stiflingly hot environment. If you're cold, you can just put on more clothes! I can't exactly strip off the in office to cool down.

OP: Why didn't you just move downstairs?

This time of year buses are hot, sticky places. I would open the window too unless it's baltic.

BTW OP, I have tattoos, albeit not on my hands. Do you think I'm an ex-con, neanderthal, knuckle-dragger too?

I'd usually open them to get rid of the stench...

I honestly would prefer to freeze rather than having to imagine what it is I'm breathing in there.

You can't please everyone. In winter someone will open the window and people will be freezing. In summer someone will close the window and people will be melting.

Personally, I prefer a window to be open, I like air and a cool or even a cold breeze compared to a stuffy bus.

On the dart and bus I always like to have the window open unless it is really cold outside. Used to do my head in when on the dart in the mornings someone would get on and first thing they would do is walk the length of the carriage closing the windows then sit at the far end.

I was afraid to read this thread in case window openers, like me, were being shredded, but I'm delighted to see there are fellow fresh air enthusiasts here.

One of the many reasons I prefer to cycle to work - especially in winter - is because the buses become unbearable when the driver switches on the heating no matter how mild the weather is, or switches it on first thing on a cool morning and then leaves it on all day despite the temperature rising. Or when the bus is full and the windows are fogged up and there is a medley of less than pleasant odours permeating the air. Sometimes the stink, and a wall of heat, hits you as soon as you step onto the bus.

Earlier this year I was on the bus and two people got on and proceeded to close any open windows. I reopened my window and a girl a few seats ahead reopened her window (it was particulary hot on that bus that night) and the window closer settled himself at the back of the bus (I was nearer the front) and lit up a cigarette. Sure, close all those windows, don't want any of that cigarette smoke seeping out into the night air.

I try to be considerate with regard to opening windows - if there's one open already, I'll sit near it, but sometimes I just can't cope with the lack of air and excessive heat (all my winter layers discarded and bundled on my lap) and have to ask the person beside the window if they mind if I open it. Most times they respond positively, some people even go as far as to comment on how hot and stuffy it is, like as if they wanted the window open but were afraid to open it and were waiting for someone like me to take the flak if a shivery sort nearby took umbrage.

Bus journeys, they sure can be hellish sometimes.

When spending 90 minutes or so on a bus every morning, I'll open the freaking window as it's people like you who spread their germs and everyone elses germs all around by refusing to let a bit of fresh air in.

I'm generally not a fan, find it very irritating when somebody opens a window and then there's a load of people freezing behind them. That said it's not always a bad thing. A couple of times on the bus home I've sat on a freezing bus wondering what the hell was wrong with the person who opened window. The other day though, I was on a very smelly 67 about 6pm and was really glad to be getting blasted in the face with freezing air as opposed to being able to smell the place!

Buses smell of piss and sweat. I open "MY" window as soon as I have to get on a bus, no matter what the weather is like.
If there are few on the bus, just sit somewhere else to avoid the breeze. Else, knuckle up. A bit of cold never hurt anyone.
Also as others said, other people coughing their germs n sheiiit everywhere with no where for them to go if the windows are not open. Ehh no thanks. I don't want yer smelly germs all over me.

I can't speak for that guy but I'm asthmatic, and quite often the buses get very stuffy and I find it very difficult to get my breath, especially on a packed bus. In addition, a lot of people wear too much aftershave/perfume and further aggravates my breathing.

Buses aren't ventilated particularly well, so opening a window is all I can do to alleviate things, however I always try to sit right down the back and only open the last window to avoid bothering the rest of the passengers. I understand the rest of you guys get cold, but you have the option of moving seats up near the front, or moving upstairs/downstairs if it's that cold. If that option isn't available, wear a heavy coat, scarf, hat and gloves. It definitely helps!

I don't take busses often but when I do I regularly open a window. The reason I do it is usualy because of the overwhelming smell of perfumes & deodorants especially lynx. I often feel as if my airpassages are going to close completely. Please take a shower at least once a day and use less product.

Out of interest, why? Surely you can't be unaware of the fact that a steamy, stuffy bus leads to colds and bugs being transmitted very easily, whereas a bit of fresh air helps no end towards preventing such a spread? So why, when the bus is steamed up and stuffy, would you insist on closing windows? What is so wrong with fresh air?

If you want to sit in a stuffy sauna, sit downstairs or up the front upstairs. Those of us who'd like a bit of air are happy to sit down the back upstairs. Oh, and buy a coat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,411 ✭✭✭✭woodchuck

I admit it; I'm a bus window openener! It's not about heat though, it's about stuffiness and people germs. Buses are nothing short of an incubator for disease in winter. A bit of fresh air can do a lot of good to help reduce the chances of catching something. If I do open a window though, I'll normally just leave it open for a few minutes. Enough time to get a good bit of fresh air in, but not so long that it gets unbareably cold.

Even if you could find a reliable car for €500, I think you're forgetting about other little things like the cost of insurance, tax and petrol/diesel. For people working in the city centre it makes a lot more sense to get the bus than to drive. Bus lanes cut a huge chunk off my commute time, not to mention the cost of parking etc.

On a trip from Galway to Cork on Bus Eireann, a child threw up in the seat behind me, the stink was unbelievable and no one was not going to tell me to not open that window.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Not a fan of the window opening myself. Usually only open in "summer".

I dont mind when they are opened - unless it is feckin freezing out ! But to the people who want to get the benefit of opening a window, can you make sure to open the proper window ? No point opening the window right beside where you are sitting. The person 3 seats behind you gets blasted in the face. Usually, you can see the person sitting there confused as to why they arent being refreshed - while the person sitting behind is getting frozen with that lovely November mist/rain

Also, a shout out goes to the woman on the 66x in the morning. She gets on in Leixlip, opens a window and then usually goes upstairs  Leaves a lot of people looking confused and/or laughing at her !
