Someone has been a bold boy!
AN IRISH submariner has admitted collecting secret codes that could be useful to an enemy of Britain.

Royal Navy petty officer Edward Devenney, 30, from Strabane, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to gathering details of encryption programmes in breach of the Official Secrets Act. He also admitted a charge of misconduct in a public office in relation to a meeting with two people he thought were from the secret service of another state.

Devenney admitted meeting two people whom he thought were from the Russian secret service and discussing information relating to the movement of nuclear submarines.

The Official Secrets Act charge was collecting information for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the State between November 18 last year and March 7 this year. He gathered details of "crypto material" -programmes used to encrypt secret information -which could be useful to an enemy.

Well he may as well print them out and hang them on the wall because those nuclear secrets won't have any use here.

Eh no. Being from a town in Northern Ireland does not make you English. It makes you a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Briton and Northern Ireland.

But yeah, you can bet your bottom dollar if this guy had done something good, on the BBC, he would be "British war hero" and not "Northern Irish/Irish" spy.

Afaik it's extremely difficult for a person from the Republic of Ireland to get a posting to a nuclear sub in the Royal Navy. Think you have to be a UK citizen.

Anything in communications and subs is restricted to us across the wall!

I thought that there was related to spying in many countries. Maybe I've been watching too much Homeland and 24 :pac:

I presume the 'British Navy' is the same as the Royal Navy.

If you read the link you'll see its an Irish newspaper describing him as Irish. The BBC actually make no reference to his nationality, describing him as a "Royal Navy submariner".

How stupid do you have to be to try this? Wasn't there a guy from MI6 offering to sell a list of spies to the Dutch (great enemy of Britain that they are). I wonder if this one was motivated by money or politics.

I hate this shyte as much as you do, but the OP's header and the article say "Irish". I take that to mean Irish as in 26 counties, Republic of Irelandish.

If he was a submariner then he couldn't be Irish

iii. Only candidates holding British nationality are eligible for the Submarine Service. No nationality waivers will be considered.

Absolute nonsense that has been debunked on here dozens of times. They are always referred to as northern Irish, just as any Murray was Scottish when he won the us open and Olympics. The only people who believe that crãp are bitter little-irelanders...

It's not even correct nonsense this time. Usually it's "British when they win, Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish when they don't"

Yep, along with the fact that the bbc never mentioned where he was from but the indo did.

What a shame, can't bash the British for this one....

please, get yourself a map and learn the difference between Britain, the UK, Northern Ireland and England. Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke have never been and never will be described as English.

What was this guy playing at. Did he really think he could pass the codes to the Russkis without MI5 getting involved?

Aah well, I hear Guantanamo is nice this time of year.

Folks, don't turn this into the usual "what constitutes being Irish" thread, and stick to the actual topic.

The Mail has the reason he gave.
He had wanted to ‘hurt the navy’ because he was angry that a free electrical engineering degree course he had been due to take had been ‘binned’ because of budget cuts.

    Eejit.

Then perhaps you need to look at a map: "Irish" people come from Ireland, surprisingly. At present the country of Ireland is divided into two states. Everybody from this country is Irish, regardless of whether they are in the independent state, or the state still under British occupation. Some 700,000 people living in the part of Ireland still under British rule choose to hold Irish passports today. Their right to citizenship of the Irish nation is protected under international law.

From my experience the average Irish person in south Armagh or west Tyrone is more culturally Irish than the average person in Dublin who, through tv and internet, is saturated with British (particularly sporting culture) and US culture and has now little attachment to an Irish cultural tradition.

Oh god no. Another poster with an Irish username talking about occupation... The majority of Nordies, protestant or catholic, want to be part of the UK, leave them alone and let them get on with stealing nuclear stuff.

Yer bloke in the OP felt so Irish he joined the Royalnavy.
