The Mario Rosenstock Show (RTE2, Mondays at 9.30pm)

Mario Rosenstock from Gift Grub/those bloody insurance adverts/Tonight with Vincent Browne etc etc gets his own TV show for the first time.

He is overexposed at the moment, but he can be very entertaining. Will his sketches and characters transfer successfully to a full series?

    http://www.rte.ie/ten/2012/1112/rosenstockm.html
"I can honestly say I'm very proud of it," he insists. "Ian Dempsey and I have been working really hard on it and the show will feature many new characters as well familiar ones.

"There'll be the likes of Miriam O'Callaghan, Vincent Browne and Gay Byrne - sure Gay never really went away. We will, of course, be looking at topical items and personalities such as James Reilly and the housing crisis."

"It's got a Saturday Night Live sensibility," he says, smartly name-checking an American TV comedy institution. "The Fast Show is an influence - but so, believe it or not, is Sesame Street. It's full of muppets."

"Another show I'd consider an influence would be Not the Nine O'Clock News. Hopefully people will tune in, enjoy it and have a laugh."

    No.

One of the unfunniest "comedians" around. I use that word loosely in regards to him.

I thought for sure his show would be on TV3

Well, your answer was always going to be a no if you never liked him. I think the question is more for his fans and followers of gift grub, etc.

I'm quietly confident. He was able to fill a week of short segments on Ian Dempsey so I suppose if he just put them together a show is possible. I just hope quality doesn't get sacrificed to fill the time slot.

Legal fears force mimic to drop Irish bankers sketches from RTE comedy

MIMIC Mario Rosenstock has revealed how he has been told to drop two sketches from his new RTE comedy on legal advice.
'The Mario Rosenstock Show' airs tonight -- but without the two skits which the impressionist said RTE's legal team warned him were "unbroadcastable".
"We had to scrap the sketches because we were told if they aired, our series could be taken off the air. It was that serious," Rosenstock told the Irish Independent.
The 41-year-old confirmed that one of the dropped skits had involved Irish bankers.

I'm really looking forward to it actually :o
Love his appearances on the LLS, as do most of my friends. Hope it's good.

Me too, Twirly.. I hope it's good.. Usually when RTE do these sketch shows, about 5% of the material is funny.. I hope Mario gets more hits..

The lawyers for the bankers have been busy for the last few weeks.. Seems like it's legal to bankrupt the country without going to jail, but by jesus if you crack a joke about it you certainly going down..

Now that you've pointed this out to me, I'm going to make a point of cracking disgusting off-colour jokes about Sean Fitzpatrick and Fingers Fingleton, insinuating they have certain repulsive sexual predelictions, at every available opportunity in future. Sure, the odd kid or nun might cry, but it's a small price to pay to strike a blow for freedom of speech.

Well you'll see in the other thread I just posted in, that Sean Fitzpatrick's lawyers got the character of "Seany Fitzpatrick" pulled from the Anglo The Musical Show also..

It's because Mr Fitz is the subject of legal proceedings, sub judice as they say ...

That James Reilly bit was funny.

He's scarily like Miriam in ways! :D

    O'Gara bit was good!

He's good at the voices but I haven't laughed yet.

Who's yer man Miriam was sitting on? He's out of something....

Sally O'Brien and the way she might look at you!

    Sally still looks well.

'He reminds me of a young Tom Selleck' was funny.

This is pure ****e. He needs to stick to Radio. The voices are good but the acting/impressions are ****e. God awful stuff he needs to take a step back and not be trying to milk every penny he can get his hands on. Jaysus he should be ashamed of this.

I love Gift Grub, this is pretty abysmal.
Wonder if that's the real Sally O'Brien? Looked like her.

Ha ha Don from the Den :)

This show is 3 years too late for Mario imo.

Groanfest in general, but I got a few laughs out first half (loved the head of Reilly). He needs a live audience.

That was pretty good, he does look like Dennis O'Brien!

Wish he'd do some newer and more relevant stuff. Such as Mick and Ming. That shows potential. The Michael Flatley and Ronan O'Gara skits are getting really old. They were hysterical when he first began doing them, but that was years ago now. They just aren't fresh or even relevant anymore. I mean when was the last time ROG played in a meaningful Ireland game and was interviewed afterwards?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Haha the Don Conroy bit was good! And Keef Duffy, how ya buggies! The Flately stuff was weak.

Hoping the second half will be better... I was really willing this to be brilliant. I think he's genuinely funny and a great actor/impressionist but the script is a bit sh1te :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Sparks43

Better start to the second half :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭keano_afc

    This is a little better.

I'm enjoying it so far. Are the live shows much different to it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,326 ✭✭✭Jason Todd

Pretty underwhelming so far alright! I'm sure it will pick up as the series goes on. The only bit I really laughed at was the 'howya buggies' one though so far.

Like someone has already said, there is something dated about a few of the segments.

I often feel the same about all the crappy addresses everyone hands out at every given moment at the beginning of anything nowadays.........

RTE comedy kiss of death again. Utter stupidity with no substance.

Really looking forward to 2nd series of Moone Boy on sky next year.....

I watched the latest live show when it was on TV and it was rubbish. Really dreadful.

I liked the David Guetta bit, and then it went on too long, like a few of the sketches.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,970 ✭✭✭Lenin Skynard

Even the Vincent Browne skit was much better when it was on its TV3 slot. RTE seems to have a knack of sucking the life out of comedy.

average I say....I liked Micheal D and Rodge....apart from that, its weak

Not many shows would reference both Don Conroy and David Guetta.
    With good reason.

WTF is this One House bit about??
    C'mon and do Gaybo! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Oh god, this house eviction stuff is cringeworthy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,873 ✭✭✭Skid

I suspect that Eviction sketch is a bit too close to the bone for a lot of people :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,749 ✭✭✭✭grey_so_what

Ah, here now, I'm not laughing...........:(......

Maybe me and Sally are getting old...........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,766 ✭✭✭JM Skipton

So disappointed, love gift grub, was really looking forward to it but not transferring well to tv or rte don't know which

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,012 ✭✭✭Plazaman

    Trivialising evictions..... there'll be war.

The better sketches from this would work well in between guests on The Late Late Show or The Saturday Night Show.
