Scratching headboard while asleep

My other half has developed a very strange habit while he's asleep. He scratches the headboard really fast with his nails while he's asleep. He's completely unaware that he's doing this and has only started doing it for the last month. As soon as I prod him he'll stop doing it, but might start up doing it a while later again. It's happening not every night but usually 3/4 times a week. I've never heard of this and it's not disturbing my sleep too much, as I'm already awoken from time to time when he snores, but would be interested to hear if anyone else had ever heard of this or knew someone who did it?
At first I thought it was a mouse, and it scared the living daylights out of me and I set a trap but then I realised he had his hand over his head scratching the headboard.....!!
