Anybody have experience (good or bad) of buying sails from Hong Kong?

would you not keep it local and try mcwilliams or watson? at least if the sails turn out poorly cut or out of shape the sailmaker can go out with you and play around and then take the sail back if they need recutting. Even for a few hundred euro savings they could be more hassle then their worth. Is the website www.fareastsails.com ? The site looks cheap and cobbled together back at the start of the internet

Bought a main a few years ago from Hong Kong. Our measurements were 100% spot on (checked and triple checked etc.) but the sail wasn't quite correct. Wasn't worth the hassle of sending it back. (they claimed they had used our dimensions accurately).

I'd rather stay local, unless desperate or on a really tight budget.

What kind of boat is this for - racing/cruising?

Quite a number of top international sail lofts have their one-design sails 'made' in the far east, but there have been quality issues, at least you have recourse to the sail loft if there's a problem. If it's for racing, I'd stay local, but if it's for cruising it may be worth thinking about.

Well it's just for cruising but would much prefere to buy local (even though sail may still be made abroad) but sail seem so cheap before taxes do you know how much duties are involved?

They usually all have a local rep at least that you can talk to or get out on the boat.
