OK, so every month (week? :o) we get at least one Wire vs. Sopranos vs. Breaking Bad vs. Dexter vs. Oz vs. a ton of other great shows. Those threads invariably fizzle out with comments along the lines of "You forgot X", or "No Y, poll fail" etc.

So here is what we'll do. We'll blow the cobwebs off the TV Awards forum and do this properly. We'll do the whole nominations gig, followed by a proper survey.

We will do "Best show of all time", that's a given. What else should we vote on? In addition to the main event, is there a case for separate polls for Best US Network Show and Best US Cable Show?

    Best Comedy?
    Best Sci-Fi Series?
Best Character in a US Drama (Network)?
Best Character in a US Drama (Cable)?
    Best Show of the 70s/80s/90s/00s/10s?
    Best UK Drama?

Give me some ideas and I'll start the ball rolling this week. Time to stop the endless polls and settle these arguments, once and for all. :)

Guys don't nominate here. This thread is just to decide on what categories to vote for.

    The ones you've mentioned plus:

    Best Drama
    Best UK Comedy
Greatest Sitcom Character (possibly separated into US and UK categories)
    Best Kids Show
    Best Prime Time Cartoon
    Best Fantasy Series
    Best Actor
    Best Actress
The Golden Oldie Award (ie. The Show you can watch again and again, and again, and again, and again, and again times infinity and it still remains to be genius... example. Father Ted)

    best ending to a show
    greatest season finale cliffhanger

Best / Worst Theme Tune / Credits.
    Most Over-rated / Under-rated Show.
Show With Biggest Ever Drop in Quality.

I think for balance the larger categories (Drama, Comedy, Sci-Fi?) should be split into US & Europe - otherwise things like The Killing (the EU version) or Luther might get lost amongst the glut of HBO stuff & US love-ins. Seems only fair?

So far the list seems cool, things that come to mind include:
Best Secondary character (not leads, but the side characters)
    Best themetune
Most memorable arcs (not the best per se, just those with perhaps the greatest payoffs)
    Best character death

Splitting it into seperate US and UK/Europe/Australia sections seems sensible. There are an unholy number of categories you could have though.

    Best sitcom
    Best sketch-based comedy
    Best Drama
    Best Period-based Drama
    Best Cop-show
    Best Sci-fi
    Best Childrens Drama
    Best Childrens Comedy
You could have best actor/actress and supporting actor/actress for most of the above

    Best Childrens Cartoon
    Best Prime-time Cartoon
    Best Soap-Opera
    Best Day-time tv show
Best Reality tv show (a contradiction in terms but some people seem to like them)
    Best Documentary Series
    Best Documentary One-off
    Best panel-based comedy show
    Best Theme tune
    Best news programme
    Best News anchor
    Best Chat show
    Best Channel
    Best Music show

Best One Season Hit Wonder show of all time (of course Firefly would walk it winning :p)

    Best Opening Credits

    Best Theme Tune

    Best Male and Female Cameo

I think the only way to do this is to do it by decade and then do an overall best of.

If you are doing that, there should be an Irish section as well.

Hahaha. Oh, were you being serious? There would probably be some fairly short shortlists for most categories when it comes to Irish tv production.

There have been plenty of decent Irish shows in different genres over the years.
It would be more appropriate to include them than have a series of polls for Australian programmes (few of which are broadcast legally over here)

I disagree: given British TV is in direct competition with the Irish channels, I don't think RTE should get special favour; US & non-US would surely be sufficient for a category split; besides, I suspect it would ignite huge arguments about what constituted things like Homegrown Comedies - would Father Ted?

Perhaps "Best Homegrown Irish Series" might suffice as a middle-ground instead?

It would walk in the dust of Freaks and Geeks you mean :P

Can we have a category for best time x quality show as in, ten seasons of greatness beats five years of greatness but also fifteen years of decent. I'm not explaining this well... call it the Seinfeld award.

    Best Mini Series ?

There needs to be a catagory for Best use of SciFi/Fantasy/Horror in a Drama, for example the ghost aborigine that lives at the bottom of the cliff in Summer Bay's caravan park, Bobby Ewing returning from the dead and erasing most but not all of the events of the past year, Fallon Carrington Colby getting abducted by Aliens, what appears to be the animated corpse of Maggie Smith haunting the drawing room of Downton Abbey, David Platt, that kind of thing. Seems to happen mostly in soaps to shake things up or see if the audience is still awake, and it needs to be commended when it does.

@CaptainNegative (below) - I'm fairly convinced that someone (might have been Colleen) fell down a cliff in Home and Away and they were rescued by an aborigine who turned out to be a ghost, but it's possible that was a dream. Damned if I can find a reference to it online though :(

^When did that happen in Home and Away? Stopped watching in about 2005, but I don't remember that storyline. Was it recent?

Single best episode of a show, ever.

Cancelled show we'd most like to see brought back to life.

Show we'd most like to see remade/rebooted (for the guaranteed controversy).

As more people call a show overrated, it becomes less overrated.
As more people call a show underrated, it becomes less underrated.

Therefore these awards should be given to the candidate with the fewest votes, or perhaps in fact a show that doesn't even get nominated :P

Tell them to stop nominating Band Of Brothers or I won't be able to vote for anything else .

Surely everyone knows that that was in a different league entirely and would win all polls ......... I think it was even leading in the presidential election polls in America ............... it even beats Atari Jaguar .

We need a category for best use of music in a series, so many of the best moments of television owe a debt to the song that accompanied them.

Just two examples of great scenes where the music just made it. SPOILERS CONTAINED IN BOTH.

Very true. Even putting the voting aside I'd really enjoy reading through / watching / contributing to that thread. So often an inspired choice of score/track/piece of music can elevate a great scene up to one you will remember forever.

Just call it the Richard Dower poll for ease of identification ;)

I'll also echo a greatest use of music in a scene. That or have a category for Best Original Score (as opposed to soundtrack). Love to see a place where we could nominate Bear's BSG score for example.

    Second lot is up now.

I was going to stop here, but I might do a small third lot with some of the quirkier suggestions later on this week. I'm just worried that I'll get 20 individual single nominees for some of them....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,516 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

How about a best score/soundtrack thing? mainly because avatar has to win it hands down and ill be damned if it doesnt get at least one award

any new rounds of nominations, if so id like to put forward the best single season of a tv show, im on about a multi season shows, but just really stand out seasons, like season 4 of dexter or 7 of the west wing ETC ETC,

it would be interesting to see what people consider the best season of TV ever, see if the best show ever also get best season,

6 final categories up now. Survey will go up early next week.

any movement on this MR E

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,572 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Sorry DR, still counting nominees.

In the regular annual awards, there might be 5-10 featured shows per category, and it's easy to pick the top 6 to go through for the vote.

For some of these categories, there are 40+ different nominees (sometimes more), which I still have to catalogue and count. Pretty time consuming. :(
