Do you fill-up by litres or euros?

I discovered, that most people seem to fill up fuel into their cars by amount in euros.
It's probably understandable if someone just pulls over to petrol station to fillup for a tenner or 20 quid.
But I've seen many people who fill-up to the top, and when gun bounces back f.e. counter shows 73.23 euro so they top up to full 74 euro.

This makes situations like here on this forum, where quite often we've got question from people saying "I top up by 50 quid a week, and travel x distance - is my MPG good?"

Maybe I'm just strange, but I do, and I always did fill-up by litres.
So if I fill my car to the top, similarly as above, when gun bounces back at 51.3 litres, I top it up to 52.
When I need just a small amount of petrol (this doesn't happen often as I usually fill to the top), I would fill up by 5 or 10 litres.
But also I know that my car takes on average 8.5 litres/100km, so I sometimes fill up 8.5 litres, and then without any calculations, I know I can travel 100km on this.

Does anyone else pays more attention to litres than euros?

I don't look at numbers at all - just fill it up to the top.

    By the €.

It's very frustrating though when you throw in the €15 you have in your wallet, and your low-fuel light still stays on : (

I don't see what the difference is?

I fill up by euros because I'm paying with euros and I don't want to go up to the window and hand some cash and wait for change.

Ie. walk up with 30 euro, pay, reciept and go.

60 miles after initial red light might mean no fuel left in some cars ;)

Aye but this is the advantage of doing mostly motorway miles in a diesel!

    No difference really.
It's just what you have in your mind.
If you go back home remember that you filled up for 50 quid, or you filled up 30 litres.
That's what I wanted to ask.

It's just a matter of knowing what you are paying. If you buy 20 litres of fuel in one station for €31.50 and then 20 litres in another for €33.50, you'll be much more aware of what you're paying - opposed to going to one station and paying €30 and the same at another, but not knowing how much you got.

25 litres shortly after warning light, unless a long journey is ahead and I fill up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,361 ✭✭✭YouTookMyName

4 gallons normally. Sometimes 5 or 6 depending.

I never really watch the few cents, I buy my diesel in the same place as I know it's reputable. Wouldn't buy diesel any where else unless I was stuck.

when tank is half full, then i go to petrol station and top that biitch up to full. I hate having less then half tank of petrol.

    Its usually around 45-50eu anyway.

Is there actually any petrol station which sells in gallons, or do you convert it in your head?

By litres when I'm paying with a card - euros when I'm paying with cash

Convert it in my head. easier work out from distance clock what my mpg is then

Going by your name you might answer this. How does Chawkes in Castletroy have petrol and Diesel at the same price...157.9? I got it there today in disbelief.

the station where I fill up is the cheapest one I know (Lee Garage, Model Farm road) so I always fill her up.

I fill up in gallons. I don't think you get as much mileage out of litres.

Yeah I don't know what the story is there, that and one other place in town has it the same, everywhere else has petrol ranging from 162-167.

    Chawkes is my local.

When I had plenty of money I'd brim fill from a quarter tank. These days I'd put €30 - 50 in but I average 28-30 mpg so it doesn't last long! A full tank costs around €110 (the 101 takes around €180 but we don't go there!)

If I'm doing a brim fill to check consumption I still have to convert everything using my phone's calculator to miles and gallons. Same with speeds, old enough to think only in mph although I can do that in my head!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,127 ✭✭✭✭kerry4sam

I always fill it up to the top and just pay with the topaz card every time, which then gets paid by directdebit monthly :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,883 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

If I look at the gauge and I'm not happy with it, I just fill it until the pump clicks off. I've been spending more time in petrol station forecourts with this car compared to my last so I don't have the time to be counting €s or litres.

I do hate it though when the pump clicks and petrol sloshes out of the filler pipe like as though it's vomiting :pac:

I fill up in euros. But I always note the litres so I can calculate the mpg. I generally drive till near the light and then just fill up. All though I never drive around with the low fuel light on I don't see the point.

I always get funny looks when i pull the hose on the pump for some slack so the last few drips come out to

    1.Get the last few drops
    2. No dripping on paintwork when im taking it out.

The ST has a funny fuel tank it makes a big vacuum "whoosh" sucking noise when i open it first and a mad gurgling noise eating the fuel just after it's filled.

I stop when when I hear a gurgle.

The pump isn't calibrated and the diesel is already paid for so no other way of measuring it.:pac:

I always brim it, keep squeezing until she clicks and then a bit more until I hear it rising up the spout.

I'm driving a yaris this last few months so i just fill it up, when i had something with a bigger tank i used to put in a set € amount, usually €50.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Always fill it up, usually between 84.5 litres and 85.5 litres. The cost varies all the time, the amount of fuel does not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,383 ✭✭✭✭gammygils

You actually use more fuel carrying a full tank!!

I just fill up to the brim every time, in both car and landrover. Its easy to figure out how the are running because I zero the clock after each fill.

Always fill it up. The less amount of time a week I have to spend in a petrol station, the better. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

Fill every 5 days or so. Would annoy me having to fill up every day or two putting 30 quid in. You're going to use it anyway so fill it up!
