Some of you may know already but the 2 JJB gyms in Dundalk and Limerick are now closed.

I was a member of one so have now got to assess the other gyms on offer...

When I enquired as to max db weight one said 40kg - would you lift that? :D

When I said 70kg easy, the reply was you bench 70kg? Good start! LOL

I'm not close enough to Dublin to go to a gym there.

Thats a shame, I sometimes train in another gym in Dundalk, I guess I will see a lot more people in that gym then.

I used to do a bit of work in the Limerick one ... when I heard on Wednesday, I wasn't shocked, it was a ticking clock as to the inevitable, but still sad to see 20 people out of a job and it was a decent facility for the city, gym floor space size, much larger compared to other local facilities. The members have a lot of choice for other facilities in Limerick, but the people ot of jobs this time of year is sad to see

SFX in Drogheda are asking members from JJB to join their place. Think that would be more up your street. Sean Hoey trains there, one of two Irish lads to be invited to compete in Mr.O in L.A. last month.

I was sad when they closed it. I was a happy member there. Now I have to use grove island to swim sometimes, it's not bad at all. Showers are just weird ;)

I've heard this morning that someone has bought the Limerick JJB site and all the equipment. Someone was onto the auctioneer to buy the reception counter and was told that everything was put on hold as someone is looking into buying the site and equipment.

    Fingers crossed!! :D

    That would be great news!

The local college was meant to buy the JJB here but given there was a soccer dome and a hockey dome and the shop and gym and three co's involved it fell down but may yet be resurrected at some point in time.

    Yes.

Nowhere at the minute but probably Felda.

I used the pool about 12 times in 5+ years in JJB but now for some oddball reason the option of a dip seems very important to me making a decision on where to go.

There are in the area AFAIK:

    Strongroom
    Aura
    Felda
    The Gym
    J-Life
    Carrickdale Hotel Gym
    Ballymac Hotel Gym

Is there any I have missed?

I heard there was one discretely tucked away at the back of a training pitch but no idea on exactly where this one is.

Just for the record - I believe JJB here was profitable but it was part of a larger chain and when the chain goes so do all the links within.

I was in JJ's in Limerick.

I heard there was a way you could claim back some cash if you had a few months left on your membership - I have 7 (if you count the 2 complementary months we got cos the a/c was broke all summer!)

I heard there were forms being sent out to allow people to claim but I haven't received a thing yet. Anybody know how to go about getting one of these forms?

I too had in the order of 7 months left as well.

If you contact the receiver that is the best bet but do update on what you do as I would like some recompense if it was available.

I was in the JJB yesterday as the door was open when driving past - it is empty and I mean empty.

Reception still there and one tub of ON aminos but apart from that it is cleaned out!

Just filled out a form and sent it to the receiver there. If anybody needs one email: webmaster@kpmg.ie

I'm not expecting to get much back to be honest. You should have grabbed that tub of ON aminos while you had the chance!

It appears the one on limerick will be opening up under the branch of planet leisure

I would have taken the ON but it was at a guess an empty point of sale tub! :D

I'll never know now but if I was caught they might have cancelled my membership or banned me from the gym...oh wait...Damn! :D

Thanks Ray - I've sent them an email.

Heard today via a friend that the local Inst. of Tech. had purchased the building(s) all of it and a planned re-opening is on for end of January.

Of course with the place being totally empty it is a big undertaking and a lot of the active members will already have found a new gym - however there is probably a couple of thousand students in the college so they would not be reliant on the public to make up the numbers etc.

Also if public were allowed in how much would they be charged.

IIRC UCD charge around a €1000 albeit for a more polished facility.
