my days food diary, heathy/non healthy any tips to improve?

    So, after a year or two getting 'sloppy' I've decided to start to take note of my daily diet and what I'm eating etc, in an order to try and lose the gut, and tone up a bit.

    I'm in my mid 30's, male, just under 6ft, honestly haven't a clue weight wise, I'd guess 95kg or so.

    Todays diet was as follows.

    Breakfast, porridge, Mandarin orange, cup of coffee, no sugar.

    Mid morning, 10am or so, cup of coffee, no sugar.

    Lunch, wrap with turkey, mixed salad, jalapenos.

    Dinner, baked spud with home made chilli, (onion, garlic, steak mince, paprika, cumin, chilli powder, can of chopped tomatoes and kidney beans, chopped pepper. (no salt etc)

    Other days, lunch and breakfast would be more or less same, dinner might consist of chicken broccoli peppers onion, stir fried with garlic/ginger/chilli/scallions and egg noodles

    Chicken fajitas


    Roasted chicken with broccoli and carrots (steamed)

    Pork steak, roasted with steamed carrots, broccoli and green beans.

    (you get the idea)

    I do partake in the odd beer (rarely mid week though) and tend to snack on low fat yoghurts, apples, Mandarins etc.

    Usually get a two litre bottle of water into me each day also.

    My job involves a lot of driving (8-17.30)

    Going to get out walking for a month before I start running again.

    Any bad habits listed above? Any tips as to what I should be eating more of/less of, and for a man whose exercised little in the last few years, how do I get back into it, (and keep it interesting to keep at it)

    much more meat/protein

    less carbs - wraps/noodles/spuds etc

    ^^^^ Nothing wrong with spuds, though practise portion control.

    Maybe cut down on wheat products, processed meats (assuming the turkey is packet slices) and definitely cut out the low fat yogurt.

    This is where food confuses me.

    I thought wraps were preferable over bread/rolls etc.
    I also thought spuds, (baked only) was healthy.
    Lastly, I've been eating that egg noodle stir fry now for the last few years as I've (mistakenly) believed it was healthy :confused:

    Is porridge classed as a wheat product?
    The turkey is sliced , but it's from a deli counter (ie, not processed)

    I.obviously don't have a clue about food :mad:

    I thought I was pretty on the button diet-wise.

    Anyone any brief ideas for alternative breakfast/lunch/dinner plans?

    Wraps and bread are pretty much the same thing. Check out the calories in a wrap and it's the same as having 2 slices of bread.

    Spuds ARE healthy, but exercise portion control as it's easy to eat too much of them. Up the amount of green veggies and limit the spuds.

    Low fat yogurts are full of sugar, which is why they're frowned upon around here. Full fat would be preferable (and tastier).

    Would you consider eating eggs for breakfast? Scrambled, poached, fried, boiled, omelette? On the weekends I have poached eggs with avocado and it's delicious. Weekdays I eat yogurt with raw oats, linseed and some fruit.

    Loads of threads on this type of topic already :rolleyes: and the same thing will get said over and over again - lower/cut carbs, higher protein and good fat intake!

    tbh the majority of "low fat" yogurts contain more crap in them then a normal full fat yogurt. In fact nearly all low fat food items are full of crap like unnecessary sugars, salts etc

    Fats = good. Sugar = bad.

    Cutting out bread/wraps alone you will see a difference. Wraps are just processed bread imo.

    Breakfast = eggs
    Lunch = salads
    Dinner Meat/fish and plenty of Veg.

    Snacks - Greek/Natural yogurt. Fruit ( sparingly), berries, nut spread.

    I'm no expert but I'm surprised you aren't getting a little bit more credit here. Kidney beans, turkey, pork, chicken and yogurt are all great sources of protein. Porridge is widely renowned as one of the best carbs and an excellent way to start the day. You've lots of vegetables, some fruit & salad. Sure there are ways to improve but you're doing lots right if you ask me....
