    Hi Guys,

starting a 5 week plan to get ripped with increasing protein and cutting out the majority of carbs. I am planning to eat about 15 eggs whites a day. Just wondering if there is anything wrong with eating them raw?

I used to eat them raw but stopped when I heard of salmonella poisoning. If you are eating only the egg whites, why not eat them hard boiled? I find it fard work to seperate the yolks from the whites. Also when do get them apart, there is a slight wastage. By hardboiling, I get no wastage as I can easily remove the yolk.

I read some where recently that Irish poultry has one of the highest salmonella rates in Europe - I think its 1 in every 3 raw eggs contains it!

I think you're slightly off there. More like 1 in 10,000

Ya my figures were a little off haha! i couldn find a more up to date article but found one from the Independent in 2007, Ireland had the 6th highest rate of salmonella in Europe with 28% of flocks over 5000 birds testing positive for salmonella. There are three different strains of it also and Ireland tested entirely free of the two most dangerous strains, Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium, which cause most human food poisoning! and there was only 9 reported salmonella cases reported in Ireland in 2011 :)

If you're separating 15 eggs a day I'd say dump them all into a bowl and use this technique

that's an awful lot of eggs though. I'd rather eat some tuna instead , can of the stuff has as much protein as 3 or 4 eggs and lots of lovely omega-3 fatty acids

Why not just buy liquid egg whites if you're going down that route?

I have always read that cooking eggs increases the bioavailability of the protein, i.e. your body processes the cooked eggs better and you make better use of the protein in your body. So 15 raw eggs might equate eating to 10 cooked ones (made up figures)

And they taste nicer to most.

If you're cutting carbs you should keep a few a good few yolks in the eggs, you're going to need lots of fats. Eating only lean protein will lead to an illness known as rabbit starvation, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_starvation. Your body will utilise energy from fats or carbs but it's very difficult to get it from protein. I use to eat raw eggs if I didn't have time to cook them. The shell keeps out salmonella, just check for cracks on the shell, if you see any dont eat the egg. Egg whites also contain avidin which attaches to the B vitamin biotin which can cause a deficiency. The yolk contains biotin which counters this effect. Dont want to sound like a hippy but thats the way nature made it, it's healthier. Just look up how bad skimmed milk is for you. The fat shouldn't be removed from foods in my opinion. I think I read somewhere that the protein is more bioavailable from cooked eggs too, just dont over do the cooking as high heats and poaching can degrade some proteins, I'd imagine hard boiling would be the easiest to counter this, also the most convenient method in my opinion. Best of luck.

You can buy cartons of egg whites in dunnes. They are already pasteurized so you can just drink them.

This one which says the exact opposite of what you are saying?

    Possibly based on this study?

I think 15 egg whites a day is a bit excessive. I usually take a whole egg with a super protein drink. I also make sure the eggs are fresh and from a farm that has free range chickens (also organic - no steroids given to chickens!). I have found this helpful in putting on muscle mass and avoiding fat.

As far as carbohydrates; be careful not to avoid them altogether. I drastic shift in your diet could have dire consequences. Give your body time to adjust to your new diet.

It sounds a little crazy to me, would you not eat less eggs & include the yolk (lots of goodness).....then supplement with Whey Protein if need be?

Would love to know what the daily food intake is like....

Low fat & Low carb together = Bad news. From the diet you posted I would encourage you to eat your egg yolks

    Why?

    Why?

Where will you get your energy from? I presume you'll be working out in those 5 weeks so you'll need some fats or carbs otherwise it will be hell

It's not that low in carbs, just hard to spot them.
The 2-1-1 recovery has 70g carbs. That plus the wedges and the small few here and there will be about 150-200g a day.
2500 cals is about right. But it could be split into better meals. Breakfast is terrible and the bulk of your carbs and fats don't arrive until steak and wedges.

I've been reading lots about eggs and specifically egg yolks recently. Seems they're not bad for you anymore?! Can anyone confirm?

Also, I remember reading something about either eating only egg whites or eating raw eggs (can't remember which) leading to some sort of deficiency.. sorry I can't remember the details and can't seem to locate where I read it.

They were never bad for you. For some reason as soon as you mention eggs, people say "oh, bad for your heart". To which I reply "more eggs for me so"
