DCM cheat

Just got a text from a friend to say he spotted a guy jump out from nowhere to join the race with a couple of miles to go yesterday. He managed to cut out a huge section of the race and ran a massive 16 minute negative split!!!!!!!! Apparently he has since been disqualified but looking at finish photos there is one of him crossing the line celebrating.

I'm tempted to link the picture but probably a bit unfair. He finished ahead of me so I'm delighted he has been caught especially as it definitely means I won my placing bet with claralara, that cheating git nearly cost me 4 pints ;)

I seen him at the 25 mile mark and I knew he couldn't have ran the whole course, he just didn't have the same look or physique of the rest of guys coming in around that time. Delighted he was disqualified.

I never understood why people have an issue with posting a cheat's details. In my view, the b******s should be outed as much as possible.

As far as I'm concerned you can post a photo, his race number, facebook account, mobile, home address, mother's maiden name ...

Was he not havin' a bit of craic? Lighten up! I think it's a class story.

He cheated in last year's marathon too. He went through halfway in 67 minutes or so but ended up with a 2:35:xx or something. He actually first came to my attention two years ago when I was spectating at the Great Ireland Run. I saw him stepping off the course before going down the Khyber and cutting across the 15 acres and rejoining the route at the hospital, crossing the line in 33 odd minutes. Chap needs his head checked. The fact that his club hasn't taken him to task yet surprises me. He did the same in the GIR again this year. Pays money to cheat in high profile races it seems.

I'd say he does it for attention so I'm not posting his details or anything here as much as I hate cheating. All you have to do is look at the photo of the leaders rounding the first corner. He's the lad in the white cap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,370 ✭✭✭pconn062

Actually turns out it was a different guy than the guy I was thinking of, and I actually have a photo of the guy you describe Lock from the 25 mile mark. Seems like a pretty sad thing to do.

No. He was cheating and would have affected the overall rankings and diminished the effort of those who performed appropriate training for the race. It is after all a contest, where each athlete is competing against all of the other competitors. If somebody cheated in boxing, would he/she just be havin' a bit of craic?

As I ran up Chesterfield Avenue, a lad popped out of one of the portaloos, clearly having just thrown on his number/race attire. It was apparent that he had not run the previous 4.5 miles. When he started running, he couldn't run at a pace that would have gotten him to that point in that time (around 6:09/mile). I don't think he could have run at that pace for 100m, not to mind the previous 4.5 miles. I made a point of turning and glaring at his number as I ran past and he looked appropriately sheepish.

Anyone have a pic of the leaders turning the first corner? Does this person run for the same club as someone coached by someone who posted in this thread? Just have a vague memory of one of them being in the pic of the lead runners at the start of the race...

edit: or is it a club with a similar singlet at the front, only see a smudgy pic on facebook.

I saw a bloke give dog's abuse to one of race stewards outside Trinity. He was trying to cross the road at one of the designated crossing points. It was a bit of a wait, as the stewards had to wait till there was a suitable gap. He was fresh as a daisy, with his medal around his neck, clutching his goodie bag, effing and blinding at the stewards for not letting him cross the road.

Eventually, he bullies his way across, stops in the middle the road to swear at them again, calling them all sorts, while runners went by him. There was no way, imo, that he ran the marathon. His attitude alone, let alone looking so fresh, to throw a few shapes walking across the road. Ironically, as one of the stewards pointed out, he had the word "Respect" on the back of his top.

Don't know if this is technically "cheating", but Roisin Ingle wrote an article in the IT about starting early. I'm sure that was annoying for the elites/wheelchair competitors she mentioned coming up behind her and her buddies!

Think I saw the guy in question on Grand Canal Bridge, and had my doubts.

On a different, but related note, I say a good few people who were in or around 3 hour pace who were not wearing numbers, but certainly looked like that had run the full distance. Whilst some of them may have been bandits, it's also possible that some had lost their number along the way (or stupidly pinned it to an outer layer that was discarded). Is any discretion used towards the finish, or are all without numbers hauled off the course before they get to the line?

From my spectating point at the turn into Westland row I noticed a few runners with no number visible. I was there early, until the 3 hr pacers past. Thought it was very odd that runners at the faster end of the race could be running without a clear number and they risked being stopped or delayed coming towards the finishing line. I remember a runner having an all out row with a security guy a few years back as the runner (with no. number) was trying to run to the finish and the security guy tried to stop him. Not sure if that is still the policy but the runner should know better.

He thinks lance Armstrong is an incredible athlete, which should illustrate his attitude towards cheating

I just realised the guys club would have won a national medal if his result counted. We are in the mix for bronze and would have been cheated out of this so it's not a bit of craic. Can we all ignore walshb comments as it is very obvious he is here to stir. I'll post the pic later.

See I couldn't careless about cheats as doesn't affect me and don't see the point in it. But when it effects medals that's not on and action should be taken against his club if they don't ban him for good.

FFS who is it? I saw a result of one guy running a super fast time, I had to look 3 times as I'd ripped him a new a*sehole in the Frank Duffy. May not be the same person but...............

i don't think it's the guy you're thinking about, somebody else has pointed him out to me so I'm going to check photos etc

I won't embed photo just in case there has been an error etc but if you go to the results look for a top 30 runner with a massive negative split.

5:09 pace for the 2nd half is very impressive.

So what's the story then, is someone going to explain the 1.23 first half thatbecame a 2.30 full? It's in the public domain now, more or less. Disgrace if it is cheating. Could be chip/timing problem I suppose.

Unbelievable. And wearing a club vest and elite no. too...

I wonder do big race organisers do an analysis of results at the leading end of thinks to look for such pace change anomalies.

Ha ha, I too saw him (the angry Respect dude), wanting to get to the north side cracked me up. My guess was that his ankle bracelet triggered alarms if he spent too long on the southside and broke his bail conditions.

Was onto Jim (race director) about this before and you'll will see lots of people getting knocked off the results in the coming few days I bet. people missing splits will all be cut I'd say.

Yeah, there were a few unhappy coaches tonight. I've only ever seen that guy once down at the club. That was a year ago when we were doin a track session. He took off like a rocket on the 1st 400 and I could barely keep up. I really bust a gut keeping with him. I patted him on the back and said that his pace was impressive. His response was that he was just here to get a club singlet; then he jumped out of the session leaving me tired and with 11 more 400 reps to do!!

Note the link is a video of another unrelated runner. Just happens to feature an interesting runner who went on to finish, ahem, strongly.

On behalf of Crusaders I can say that we were notified of a problem with the result of one of our members yesterday afternoon and have been investigating. We immediately notified both the DCM organisers and the AAI that we were taking such action.

Out of interest how does one qualify for an elite number? I would have thought you'd need to satisfy pretty rigorous criteria.

Disgraceful. I know two of the lads in that clip, and both finished around the 2:45 mark. But our friend here - even though he is obviously flagging already at 10K - miraculously took 15 minutes off them by the finish.

The guy is the Kip Litton of Irish running, and like the famous Mr. Litton, it's baffling how in the days of chips and videos he thought he'd get away with it.

Phenomenal detective work by all and great to see the club response although from reading above it seems club member may be doing a disservice to the club.

Shocking that someone would a) want to cheat and b) dumb enough To think he would get away with it at that part of the field. I wonder where he skipped? Maybe skipped off and cut out the UCD lap or had a bike somewhere?

Last year's results are still up on the DCM website, and he ran 1:06 for the first half, but 1:49 for the second. Funnily enough, he registered no time at the 5 mile mark, and I certainly don't remember seeing him running with the Kenyans for the first half.

Looks like he refined his - ahem - "training regime" for this year.

It baffles as to why he wore a club singlet. I wonder did he feel it gave him some legitimacy ? In both videos linked he looked well out of his depth
