Hi guys sorry for arriving late on this thread...

I'm looking at an 11 Focus 1.6TDCI 90BHP STYLE - bout 35km. Coming from a golf TSI - i guess there will be significant difference in power but all i want now is something reliable that doesn't look bad. IS this a good engine - i read somewhere else that there may be some issues with the turbos on these models? Anyone have any opinions?

    Many thanks

    Whats up with the golf?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 446 ✭✭corklad32

Well nothing at the moment but ive had the steering rack changed, timing chain changed that kind of thing so the reliability on the golf tsi's or golfs in general seems poor

    Yeah, avoid those 1.6tdci focus's ....

Which version of the Golf TSI do you have? Standard 1.4 Turbo or Turbo + supercharger?

Focus is fine, 90bhp is non DPF so that is a plus. I suspect it will feel a bit cheap compared to your Golf, especially in Style trim.

Its a 1.4 140 with turbo + super. The dealer is looking at about 6-6.5k with mine (08) so im thinking this isn't a bad price to go to a focus 11 style

Very little to go wrong in general if the 90bhp version suits you.

Atleast the dpf scaremongers haven't a leg to stand on in this thread :p

140bhp to 90bhp each to there own but i couldn't take a reduction in Bhp when you are used to more power.

Makes a change from the knowfukalls in the other threads.

OP, the Focus will feel very different to your current car. It's quite a big step down in quality and the interior finish won't be as nice but the Focus is still well screwed together and comfortable. The engine itself is a good unit, but make sure that the service schedule has been followed religiously. Any gaps in the history or overdue servicing I would walk away - it's not like there are a scare car on the ground.

Along as it is serviced frequently and the correct grade of oil is used then it should be grand. Deviate from either of these and you will be in for a world of pain, this engine is not very forgiving when it comes to lack of proper maintenance.

The other car i was looking at was a 09 astra sxi design. Nice car expensive though. Bout 4.5k with my own as well and still a 1.4 engine too. hummmm

If the Astra was the new model, and 1.7 then I'd have it over the focus all day long.

The newer dv6 engine is an 8 valve engine opposed to the older 16 valve.
These engines are really to new to know how reliable they are...

Afaik this is the engine thats in the 2011 focus 1.6 tdci...I know the 2012 1.6 tdci has this newer engine.

The original dv6 engine which has been used by peugeot/citroen/ford/volvo/
mazda/mini are a good engine ONCE they have been serviced at or before 15k kms and ONCE the correct grade of fully synthetic oil is used.
Also the new engine has a dpf like all modern diesels today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,487 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

    90bhp - no dpf
    110bhp - dpf

    Back to an 8v?

My mother has a 2011 1.6 TDCi focus, with about 50k kms on the clock so far. Only issue with the car to date has been a faulty windscreen washer.

Lovely car to drive, but I would hold out for the 109bhp one... most 2011 run out models had this as standard, along with Alloys, bluetooth, heated window and other zetec things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,487 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Just to add that Ford had to use the 110bhp version with a DPF in the MY11 old shape Focus as new EU emmission regulations came into effect in Jan 2011 where all new diesel cars had to have a DPF. It is possible that the OP is looking at a MY10 Focus 90bhp registered in early 2011. One less thing to worry about though.

The newer engine only appeared in the new shape Focus.

Its hard to know...The one im looking at is a 2011 Ford Focus 1.6TDCI 90BHP STYLE. It doesn't give anymore details though...

The old shape Focus uses the older 1.6 TDCi engine with a 5 speed gearbox. It was available in 90bhp and 110bhp. The 110bhp has a DPF.

    Old shape Focus:

The newer 1.6 TDCi engine with the 6 speed gearbox was only introduced in the new shape Focus, it comes in 95bhp and 115bhp, they both have DPFs.

    very late 2007 110 bhp
ford quoted me 1650 for the dpf and 1500 for turbo!

OP, consider a Kia ProCeed, the 1.6 crdi engine in them is WAYYYYY batter than the psa yokes, and they're as great car, and in your budget, you get one with lots of years of warranty left, good peice of mind!

I 100% second that a that's what we traded of the focus... smashing car and not a days bother with it in the 4 years we had it

I'm on my 2nd on of these. 115bhp is much more lively but still no rocketship.

Current 95bhp one is returning almost 60mpg. Very refined at speed.

Both have been 100% reliable, and a main dealer service of the last one (fixed menu servicing) cost a little over €100.

You should sell the Golf privately, you'll get more, then head to the UK for a clean 1.8 diesel Focus, or something else entirely.

Don't touch a style, they're very basic spec. Get the Zetec at least. In a few years time when you're coming to sell it on and there are loads of these on the market, you want yours to stand out that little bit.

I won't even get into another argument about the reliability of these, but a week hasn't gone by where I haven't heard of one of these giving hassle...

Also, if you're going as new as 2011 try and get the new shape.

The MY11 Focus Style was actually better speced than a Zetec model as they were the run out model before the new shape arrived so Ford speced them up. An 11 reg Style has air con, voice activated bluetooth, alloy wheels, front fog lights, etc. Not many 11 reg Zetecs about because the Style was better value at the time. The Zetec would only have added sports seats and front arm rest but no bluetooth.

Apologies, a friend had a 09 Style and it was absolutely horribley spec'd, he couldn't give it away.

Normally run for Ford to lob on spec to end of era models any who.

Yep the 09 Style would have replaced the basic LX model at the time.

All Zetecs had a/c, alloys, front fogs, sports seats and sports suspension. There were a few other minor trim enhancements too.

Bluetooth, usb and ipod connectivity really are essential at this stage. They are a €200 option currently, and well worth it.

Yes but the run out old shape Focus Style had alot of that stuff too plus bluetooth which made the Zetec at the time kind of redundant.
