Times you got stuck in a game.

The last time I remember being really stuck in a game was when I was playing Flashback on the Mega Drive.

The crazy thing was that it was in the only the second screen of the game. You would drop down a hole into a new screen to pick up a hologram or something. Then you had to jump up and grab a ledge to climb back out of the screen. For some reason it never occurred to me that the character would be able to jump up and grab a ledge.

There wasn't much else to do in that screen and I remember being really frustrated that I couldn't get anywhere. I think I was stuck there for two days. I felt pretty stupid when I figured it out. You can see what part I'm talking about in the first 25 seconds of the video below.

Anyone else have any similarly silly moments or parts in games that were just very tough to beat?

In ff8 Squall trying to save Rinoa in Space

Oh that drove me ****ing nuts. Everyday I try to catch her and I just couldnt. I thought it was a glitch or something, i finally gave up.

1-2 yrs later I sat down and gave it another shot and it was of the most happiness moments in gaming for me that I finally caught her

if Flashback was made now you'd have a 20 minute tutorial teaching you how to walk left and right, and get achivements for doing both, it'd also have huge flashing context sensitive "jump up here!" arrows and then offer to do it for you if you stop for a few seconds.

The final level of Golden Axe on the harder difficulty. Tough as nails. Don't think I ever finished it IIRC (challenge accepted!)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Loved the game, also never finished it. Got stuck somewhere in Red Forest, cannot remember where exactly though. Very unforgiving game imo but that's half the beauty of it :)

Fantastic Dizzy - Again my mind is very fuzzy but I distinctly remember getting stuck somewhere, IIRC I found out that it wasn't even halfway through the game. I really should get around to finishing it.

Other notable games for me: Dark Souls and Super Mario Bros 2: Lost Levels

I remember getting stuck in the original Prince of Persia game a few times, but i eventually finished it.

There was this one game on the SNES i think, and i can't recall it perfectly, but it was a 2d platformer, you were basically some guy who had to do all these challenges for different guilds, getting armor and weapons along the way. I think it was one of those games where the screen doesn't move, just loads another screen. It was one of the most frustrating games i've ever played, and i definitely didn't finish it as i couldn't get past a certain guild quest. I'd love to get it again to try, but i can't remember it... (if anyone can help me with that ;) )

Nintendo 64 playing Zelda Ocarina of Time

You had to play a tune in front of some statue but dammit, I was stuck for weeks

The manuel had a helpline that you rang up, it was pretty expensive, one of these premium lines

Some English chap sorted me out in seconds

I doubt these lines exist anymore but there just wasn't youtube or website walkthrough guides back then

Anybody else ever ring up a helpline that was run by the games company?

This. I think I gave up on the game because of this.

The final boss battle in Space Marine. That's one that really stuck with me. It is very tough.

Tried that Zero mission on mouse and keyboard a few days ago. Needless to say, I need a new monitor now.

It was bad enough with a PS controller. Anyone who manages to complete it with M+KB deserves a medal

That fecking race mission in Mafia 1. Horrible controls.

I'm not exaggerating - I was stuck on the Ready Steady Go level of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan for over half a decade. I just couldn't manage it - when it reached the part you had to do three long spin wheels, I inevitably failed time after time. This was on normal mode :(

I finally completed it a few weeks ago, with the added assistance of the extended 3DS stylus. Literally the proudest moment of my gaming life.

    Now? Hard mode.

A good solid 2weeks to finish it.

Was stuck in Shining Force 2 for over a month. Didn't know how to trigger the next part of the story. Ends up I had to place a wooden tile I found into a tree, no indication was given.

A more recent one for me would be playing Max Payne 3 on hard.
The part on the roof of the hotel when everything's collapsing
got a bit frustrating after about 20 attempts.

I think there was a guy with a rocket launcher at one point. There was also one of those heavily armored guys which has you pinned down, its nearly impossible to get a shot at him.

Spartan: Total Warrior. Final boss battle with some greek god. Took me a few hours to do the previous 13 missions in 1 go and 2 weeks and 2 TVs to do the last 1. Demolished a controller and a TV in the process.

Extermination on the PS2, resi type game got to near the end and couldn't figure what to do after that, ran around the whole map several times to no avail.

Gargoyles in demons souls, just a bloody tough fight, finally made some headway into the gargoyle and a 2nd popped up.

I just remembered that I gave up on Dark Souls earlier this year. I was enjoying the game but I got to a point that I could no longer progress and I think it was very early too. I had a few different paths open to me but every way there was an enemy I couldn't beat. I remember asking for tips in the big thread here about the game but it was no use. I was even levelled way, way over where I should have been at that point according to people who now the game well.

It's a shame because I was enjoying it.

I had to give up on Splinter Cell: Double Agent due to this annoying puzzle

also never finished Far Cry because of the end of game baddie

The fecking escort mission was the part that made me use Action Replay. Seriously, if I'd heard "Spartan, help me" one more time I was just going to kill him myself. Actually, I think I did.

I stopped either GTA 3 or Vice City when I got fed up of trying to fly the remote helicopter through the multi storey car park. At least I took a break but other games have gotten in the way since

GTA San Andreas, the car dealer ship near your garage, you had to do some fancy 360° ramp flip to unlock it.
Gave up on PC, I think it was for console controllers only or some crap.

I got stuck very early in Red Dead Redemption trying to beat that chick in the horse race. I heard 'I trust you're not gonna be a gentleman about this' over and over and over. Unfortunately there was no option to pull out a gun and shoot her horse in the leg so I never managed it. I think there was an option to play on in the game even without completing this objective but I was too fed up to do so.

Been stuck lots of times, but the one that still annoys me is the Heart of Darkness on the PS1. I think I got right to the end, or very near. You have to fight a seemingly endless supply of the baddies, coming from both sides of the bridge. Just could not do it, thinking about it now maybe there was something other than the shadowy baddies I should have zapped but didn't at the time and haven't played it since, too traumatised.

I tried Demon's Souls on NG+ a while back and it's a good step up from the first playthrough. In Dark Souls you can upgrade your armour. The fact that you can't in the original means you're stuck with the same equipment against significantly tougher enemies with little or no improvement on your part.
Parts of Far Cry, namely the first Crow fight drove me to the point of shutting down my laptop for fear of throwing it across the room.
The Feral Chaos manikin in Dissida 012 is also really nasty unless you set up certain characters in a certain way.

IIRC in Colin McRae Rally (the first one), you had to finish in the top 6 of a rally during the season in order to progress to the next rally. The rally of Sweden took me months to complete!

    Castlevania: Simon's Quest

What a cryptic fùckin' game that was. Constantly throwing holy water just so you won't get stung by a see-through block that drops you to your death.

Eye of the Beholder 2 - Silver Tower level 4. It was a huge maze with illusion walls, buttons to be pressed at one end to open the doors in another, areas where you'd be flipped 180 degrees and all walls looking the same (illusion or not) with creatures with 75% damage reduction chasing you (except in a small time window). Never got through that level until I got hold of a map.

Only played through it again recently and that level still gets me.

The one game that comes to mind for being insanely difficult and having numerous rage inducing moments is Shadow of the Beast 2.

The game was well ahead of it's time and easily one of the best games of it's era but man was it unfairly hard. Imagine Dark Souls with one life, no bonfires or estus flask and you get the idea!
