    Hi :-)

Today I was FINALLY diagnosed with IBS but the doctors so far have been sooo vague and contradictory that I don't feel like I'm any further on in my quest to manage it.
While I know that IBS is a very very unique and difficult syndrome to manage as it's very individualstic all I want is a little bit of guidance.

The doc told me that maybe I shouldn't eat too much fibre so since he told me that I sometimes have white bread and then sometimes have brown. I've figured out myself that fizzy carbonated drinks like Coca Cola and Club Orange/Lemon/Shandy DO NOT agree with me.
Today however, the doctor gave me a list of things that I should avoid.
Fibre, chocolate, dairy products, citrus fruits, nuts, wheat and a few other things but I forget what they were.

This seems completely contradictory to everything I've read and researched about IBS...

Can someone please help?!? My belly is torturing me and I don't know how to manage it :-/

    Thanks x

    Hi,
I really feel for you. I used to suffer really badly with ibs, and, like you, was completly overwhelmed at the start! For me it was a case of trial and error,I find I'm ok with dairy as long as I don't go overboard, but I can't eat any wheat or yeast at all. Even gluten free pasta kills my tummy! So if I was you I would cut out as much processed food as possible. I know stress is a big trigger for me too, so as much as you can try to go easy on yourself! Best of luck :)

FODMAPS! The ONLY scientifically validated diet proven to reduce symptoms of IBS.

Here is a list of foods that contain them:

    http://www.ibsgroup.org/brochures/fodmap-intolerances.pdf

You eliminate all of them for one month, then introduce one food at a time until you find the ones you can't tolerate.

For me, sweet-corn, cabbage and wheat are by far the worst offenders, can't tolerate even small amounts.

But only get a reaction from others if I eat large amounts e.g. onions.

It is very restrictive at first but worth it to be symptom free long term.

    Thanks guys!

It's really hard when the doctor gives the impression that he couldn't care less.

My cycle seems to be two bad weeks (cramps, running to the loo etc..) and then two weeks of no reactions to anything and having bad constipation.

The doc did mention anti-depressants but I think I'd like to stay away from them!

    Thanks for the advice! :-)

P.S Has anyone read Allen Carr's Easyweigh to Lose Weight? I read it in a day and a half and it seems to make sense. Going to see how eating fruit from breakfast will affect/help me even tho doc said to steer clear of citrus fruit/nuts/grains etc!

Hi there, :) Unfortunately when u have IBS it's alot of work finding out what triggers it."Soluble fibre" should be added to ur diet as it helps the condition,I know quite alot about IBS as my daughter suffers with the condition as well.I call it a "condition" as there is no cure but,you can get it under control.Take acidophulis after each meal, and u need to avoid acid fruits and vegetables, sodas like coke cause constipation, the acidophulis puts a lining on the stomach and colon proctecting it from damage and helps with the bloating.eating a low gi diet helps.Coffee and tea may also trigger as well as dairy process of elimation i'm afraid, hopes this helps, don't give up,if ur near a good health shop pop n and they will help u out....
