Hair thinning?? Anyone had it happen and grow back.

    Hi Guys,

I am hoping someone will be able to offer me some advice. I have noticed over the past few months that my hair has started to thin at the front. I had been using Live Colour XXL in my hair for a few months but stopped as soon as I notice the thinning. I put the colour in ever two months over a six month period but everyone is telling me that it is not likely to be the hair colour. I have been to the doc who really didn't ask too many questions and just said it's prob the hair colour but when I phoned the scalp clinic they said it could not have been the colour. The last time I applied the colour was the 17th of July and have not used styling products and very rarely use the hair dryer for fear of doing damage and more hair falling out. The doc said it should grow back but it's been a few months and I cant even see any new hair coming through and I am concerned now. I had blood tests done and they all came back fine. Has anyone else had this happen? Does anyone know the longest time it would take new hair to grow back once the old hair falls out? Has anyone tried any treatments that actually work?

I would be extremely grateful for any feedback or advice on this.

    Thanks in advance!

You should ask your GP to refer you to a trichologist. They will find the underlying cause as opposed to just telling you it will grow back. There are so many possible causes - stress, iron defiency etc, that you really need to see a specialist.

    Good luck!

I have recently been having the same problem. Mine is more at the crown of my head. I can think of at least three things causing it (years of straightening and using a middle parting, having pcos, anxiety) - then stress of worrying can't be helping it either!! I'm definitely going to give those pills a try. I started taking a vitamin specifically for hair growth this week but didn't read any reviews. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah I am going to go back to my GP in a week or so because I think he brushed me off a little. I will request a referral as you suggested. Thank you.

I have psorosis on my scalp, and I know that when its really bad (when im stressed or sick) then I can lose a lot of hair, but its only noticeable when I am washing my hair.

I have very sensitive skin so it could have something to do with that, thanks. This is the first time my hair has ever thinned out though that I know of. I can see my scalp clearly in certain light and my hair feels lighte. I have no bald patches though which is good but I do want to stop it before it gets to that stage.

Do you wear tight ponytails/buns/ or any type of of style that has your hair pulled back tightly everyday? Or extensions? These can cause thinning of hair and bald spots at the front or around the hair temple. I do not know for sure if it is reversible or not.

About half of my hair (if not more) fell out since the summer. I went to the doctor and the list of things it might have been was long. Turned out I was anaemic in the end. It's stopped falling now and is slowly growing back.

Mine also fell out before after I had a baby and it grew back well.

There are so many different types of hair loss it's important you get the correct diagnosis.

Hi, I lost a lot of hair when I change my pill. It was one of the side effects of this particular one. Have you changed/started a new hormonal contraceptive? Once I changed back to my original pill i started to grow back my hair. I also started taking Kerastase tablets to promote my hair density, they are available from some hairsalons and I found them really good.

could it possibly be a hormone thing? I notice someone else mentioned an issue with the pill.
I came off the pill about a year ago and noticed my hair thinned dramatically all over my head (I just noticed it was particularly bad in the front but I think that's because that's what your looking at all the time you do become focused on it. and it's also overstyled like most peoples). My hairdresser has said it was thin all over.
I took the vitamin 'head high' for about 5/6 months and noticed a small difference but whats improved it the most is just time, it has started to grow back and I think it was just a matter of my hormones balancing out. After being on the pill for 10+ years I think it was just a shock to the system.
I did take a break for about 8 months 3 or 4 years ago and my hair thinned then too so.
I spoke to 2 hairdressers though and they said they had never heard of hair thinning because of the pill so just thought I'd mention it!
I would go back to my doctor for a 2nd opinion if I were you op.

Thanks for that. I had my bloods tested and they came back clear. Although I have been told there are further test you can get so I got a printout from my doctor to see exactly what he tested me for. I have to saying hearing that your hair did grow back is a great comfort. Thank you!

I might give the Kerastase a try so thank you. I am not on the pill or any medication so I am a bit baffled as too the exact cause. I am just hoping whatever it is can be treated. Thank you!

It could be a hormone thing alright. I think I will take your advice and go back to my GP. I am also going to visit a Trichologist as suggested earlier. At this stage I just want to figure out what is causing it and how I can treat, or for that matter if I can treat it. Thanks for your advice!

No I would very rarely tie my hair back in a ponytial or bun I like to leave it loose but would for going to the gym or a jog but would take it down straight after I shower. Thanks for that though I will bear it in mind.

Ok! Well, I've been involved with Alopecia Ireland for a while now, because my own hair thinned out and thinned out (from teen years) and is not coming back. I'm a wig wearer. There are many causes and cures for hair thinning and thankfully most people recover from their hair thinning. Best thing is to get your bloods done, check iron and hormones. I would suggest staying away from the Universal Hair Clinic in Goerges Street.

Some of my friends have regrown their hair using Regain for women. Losing your hair is a massive headf*k but not the end of the world. Best of luck.

Thanks very much for advice. I had my blood done and my iron was fine so I thought no more of the iron thing but I went to a Trichologist in Galway and she asked what my Ferritan levels were. She advised me many women with Ferritan level below 70 can experience hairloss (although from the report on the print out from my blood test anything between 7mg and 100mg is normal). She had expected my level to be around 20 or 30 but when we check with my doctor it turned out my ferrital level was 7mg and the Trichologist assured me that this was the cause. She advised me to eat red meat 3 times a week avoid tea, milk and red wine for an hour before and after each meal and before and after taking supplements. She advised I take iron supplements in order to increase my ferritan (iron store level). I had never really heard about ferritan before but I checked online later that day and found a number of sites including chat boards about this issue and read stories from people who had experience the same problem. The Trichologist said it would take about 4 months before I would notice any difference but from reading the boards some women have said it took 8 to 12 months for the ferritan levels to rise but in most of the cases once they got their levels up to above 70 sure enough their hair grew back. I am really hoping that this is the cause and that it can be resolved. Thanks again for your post and advice it was very much appreciated.

Thanks for your post. I visited a Trichologist as I had bloods done and everything appeared fine. She asked me to check with my doctor to see what my iron store levels (Ferritan) were and advised that many women with levels below 70 (although according to my blood test report from a medical perspective anything between 7mg and 100mg is normal) can experience hair loss. She had imagined mine would be around 30mg but it was actually lower only 7mg and she seemed extremely confident that this was the cause. I have since searched the net and found that this is a common enough problem. I am hoping that that is the cause of my hair loss as once I can get my levels up then my hair should start to grow again. You should check with you doctor to see what you levels are. Hope this info is of use to you.
