DSO hasn't happened yet. Think it's time to think of closing this thread.

FM switch-off? Not for the foreseeable future.

DAB (+) will become another tier, not a replacement, for sound broadcasting.

RTE aren't going to switch to digital for quite a while because it would mean they would have to add lots of fill in transmitters

A lot of places with TV relays are suffering with píss poor FM and as a result would get nothing from DAB.

Rosscarbery, as an example. When I was on holiday there there was a better signal from Mount Leinster than the intended transmitter at Mullaghanish because there was enchanced atmospherics. It quickly faded when the rain came.

RTE had provision for 5kW services from Mt Gabriel on 89.1, 91.3, 93.5, 98.7 etc, but these never came to fruition. Would help quite a bit for radio reeption in West Cork.

The TV switch to digital gives us better pictures, more channels, better sound, increased coverage, no noise on our screens, and the government can sell off spectrum for money. Switching from FM to DAB would give less coverage, poorer quality audio, the need for more transmitters, poor reception while driving with breaking up etc.

Please tell us why there is going to be a switchover in 2016 to an inferior system that costs more for the broadcast companies and the consumer, and why no one has been told about it.

Denmark recently announced that it will look at switching off FM in late 2019 if there is at least 50% of the population is listening via DAB in mid 2018.

RTE are always talking about how they need to save money, just kill off DAB, nobody will care. FM is a good example of an analogue technology which is superior in every way to its digital 'replacement'.

Between crap DAB, 'digital aerial', the botch job we've made of DTT, endless Freeview retunings in the UK, etc. the word digital which once promised great things is becoming a dirty word.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
