Smoking on Dublin Bus Yay or Nay?

As smokers are tax payers too, I believe that they should be accommodated as well. Smokers have to endure long commutes on Dublin Bus, Bus Eireann and Irish Rail etc. without being able to have an aul shmoke.

It is people's own business whether or not they want to sit in a smoky environment and whether or not they wish to smoke and hence pollute their own lungs.

Workers will then be paid (slightly) extra or if they want, sign a waiver and work cleaning out these compartments. I seriously think that the whole "workers shouldn't be subject to smoke" is a little far. If the area is empty, the worst they will have to endure is a smell of stale smoke.

My proposal is a section at the rear of DB with a door and people can enter and smoke away during their long commutes (no children allowed inside) and one smoking carriage per train on Irish Rail.

What say ye o good people of boards??

Stop smoking or buy a car. Problem solved.

Non smokers dont choose to inhale the smoke of other people who are too selfish to think about those around them.

Are you seriously suggesting that bus drivers impose possible health risks on themselves to suit smokers?

My proposal is that people should be able to use a bus without having to worry about getting lung cancer.

Are you talking about hash or heroin? Don't mind the oul heroin myself, something soothing about the smell.

In the US some places won't hire smokers because of the extra health insurance premiums.

So the plan is a non-starter since employers won't pay for the extra PPE or health cover or would be stingy about it.

let's go back to the days of open carriages on trains with fireproof bench seats

This doesn't work either as health and safety means you need enclosed spaces to protect occupants in case of a crash

You're an inconsiderate prat if you light up on a bus and I say that as a smoker.

Certainly not in a public place. In a pubic place, well, ask the crabs.

By the way, originally prisons and hospitals (!) were excluded. Has that changed?

As I smoker, I don't think smoking should be allowed in busy, crowded places like public transport.

It's my choice to ruin my body, I don't want to force that onto other people.

Eh, its not too far to not force drivers to work in a manky smoking environment. Smoke smells disgusting and for old people / asthmatics it's dangerous.

If you can't handle an hour's drive fcuking walk or get off the bus.

If the commute was so long that smokers need to be accommodated for, then then the buses need toilets, and be required to make comfort stops too.

There is nothing like lighting up a nice cigar on a bus

Even if there was a smoking area on public transport (which i don't think there ever will be) the smell of smoke would drift through the entire bus/train and linger. I used to smoke, and I always hated the smell of stale fags. Not something you want in a public place.

And other addicts should be accommodated too: there should be bars, and your friendly local drug dealer should lurk in the corner, twitching and fiddling with a silver paper packet.

No real issue with smoking. I'd rather it than the ear diseases you can pick up from 'music' being played or loud groups of people heading out for the night.

Lovely for you. I'm asthmatic. Plenty of others are too, or have COPD or cystic fibrosis or bronchitis.

I've noticed some people on trains disembark with a cigarette at the station stops and get as many drags as they can in before the doors close again. I can hold out for a journey, I'm not a chain smoker. Some people though literally start going into cold turkey if they go half an hour without one.

The E cigarette could be a solution though, AFAIK they can be used anywhere.

On the shinkasen in Japan they have carriages for smokers; each seat has an extractor fan above it - so you don't end up reeking of it. Quite innovative but I couldn't see that happening on Dublin Bus.

As a self satisfied smug smoker, I do miss it from the pubs but not public transport.

I don't think there should be a separate smoking section, because I don't think there should be any smoking on public transport.

However, I do think there should be a separate smokers section, because I don't think they realise how bad they smell.

I don't, I'm a smoker, and I don't want people smoking on the bus with me!! Smoking needs to be done in very well ventilated areas (or my kitchen, it's MY kitchen, feck off), a visit to Copenhagen Airport's smoking area in 2007 really taught me this! That plus myself and a housemate smoking in the porch during the tail end of a hurricane about 7 years ago. Smoke in an enclosed space is even horrible to a smoker, can't imagine what it's like to a nonsmoker, never mind one with an illness!

How do smokers survive 7 hour plane trips?

I went through it by being too hungover/tired to want to smoke on the way over, and the way back, just didn't light the first one that day morning. Once I lit one, that would have been it. I did almost kill the kid behind me for repeatedly sticking her feet into the back of my seat, but I survived.

Bus journey? Get over it :)

Are Owl's not endangered? But much to be grinding them in to you cigarettes.

Providing a smoking area will bring no extra passengers seeing as they are travelling anyway. So for no extra money you want DB to spend millions redesigning all their busses and/or have a totally bespoke fleet of busses built for them?

Definitely seems like a good way for a money pit company to spend more taxpayer money.

There should be smoking and non smoking geographical jurisdictions, complete separation.

So I don't have to listen to the smokers who think non smokers are stealing their entitlements.

God no, the bus is bad enough. And can you imagine the additional filth!? I really don't want to come into work stinking of someone else's fag with a burn hole through my handbag. And I don't think most of the mothers of Ireland want to have to sit there with someone else's smoke blowing into their baby's face.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,815 ✭✭✭SimonTemplar

OP, have you taken leave of your senses!

Even if the bus had designated smoking areas, the fumes would still travel around the whole bus. It is bad enough when one scumbag smokes, but the bus would become intolerable if everyone did it.

If you smoke on the bus, you are forcing fellow passengers to inhale your fumes that have been proven to cause many of the diseases as direct smoking. Aside from the health implications, it would be very unpleasant to get off a bus smelling of others' smoke.

If smokers want to spend thousands of Euro each year for the priviliage of inhaling a carcinogen, go right ahead, but don't force others to do so. Don't be so selfish!

    On a similar note, in this day and age, I don't understand why people don't give up smoking. OK some people don't want to give up, but for those who do, answer this question;

"Would you rather fight a battle against nicotine addition or lung cancer?"

I realise it is extremely difficult to give up smoking, but it is a walk in the park compared to the treatment for some of the health problems it can cause. You don't want to be lying in a hospital bed in your 50s regretting not giving up smoking in your 20s. Don't gamble with your health!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,730 ✭✭✭✭entropi

You choose to smoke, but need to use the bus? The answer is easy. Stop smoking, or wait until the journey is over (or if a Bus Eireann/JJ Kavanagh's type bus, have one on the stopover).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭PizzamanIRL

That is the most ridiculous question ever OP.

What's next, let junkies inject themselves (although some of them do) on public transport?

Give smokers a weekly allowance to buy their fags if they're broke?
It is people's own business whether or not they want to sit in a smoky environment

So if I'm on a 2 hour journey with Bus Eireann and someone lights up a fag 1 hour into the trip, it's my fault for staying on the bus and not getting off early?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,009 ✭✭✭✭Run_to_da_hills

There is only one type of bus that should permit smoking up stairs.
