I know this isnt going to be a very popular thread. BUT IMO BMW are SOOOO overrated. Im not talking about the high-performance "proper M-jobs". Im talking about the average yokes you see the "Ive got it made-Im in a Beemer type fools driving around these days". My brother wants to buy a 05-06 white beemer.Im trying to put him off. So many fools are sucked in by this BMW badge thing. Not for me personally.Irish people are suckers for em.Prestige-My arse.;)Awaits a bashing.

You've very obviously never owned one.

Its so common, every second car on the road is a bmw these days, why would you want the same car everyone else is driving. They are s1te inside, really cheap and tacky and poorly laid out. They look crap on the outside too, no style at all, they are just blocks, apart from the 6 series which looks great and the 7 series isn't too bad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,943 ✭✭✭smcgiff

They can look very basic on the inside, and you've to pay a lot to get the goodies.

Oh and the 1.6l was a complete joke, far too under powered.

They are extremely boring on the inside especially the 1 and 3 series. But then most vag cars are. I can see why people like them though, theres something about them, moreso the older models IMO though.

My other brother did.Problem after problem. But your right-Ive never owned one personally. They make beautiful cars without a doubt. But when they f-up they cost a lot to repair. And things go wrong pretty frequently on beemers. The quality is often overlooked for the badge I think by Irish buyers.Germans tend to avoid BMW.;)

You can buy a decent e36 for about 1k nowadays there man, I'd say everyone can afford a BMW, if they wanted to. And challengemaster owns a very nice one...

Why's that? Are they expensive? Don't look too dear on Donedeal, especially the older petrol ones. Actually look pretty cheap, tbf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭AugustusMinimus

I think the point that needs to be made here is that in the last 10 years, cheaper cars have closed the gap on more expensive cars in terms of driveability and equipment. However, the price gap for the most part has remained the same.

The added value you used to get for the extra cost just isn't as much as it used to be.

When it comes to BMW, I just can't get over the modern styling. The new 1 series, 3 series, 5 series and 7 series are all ugly IMO. The 6 series I like.

BMW have also gone nuts with the amount of SUVs they produce. The X1 and X3 are as ugly as sin. I don't mind the styling on the X6 but it's completely impractical considering it's supposed to be an SUV.

I also note that BMW will soon be produced a FWD car. Since when can a FWD car be considered "The Ultimate Driving Machine" ?

07 VW Golf TDI. A lot cheaper than an equivalent BMW and twice the car. Mine is an import with all the trimmings by the way.I know theres an awful hatred for VW on motors but so what.

FWD Audis are certainly over rated. I wouldn't say the same about Quattros.

I'll be going back to a Lexus (or maybe an XF) once I clock up about another 30,000 on my beamer. A lexus is so much more luxurious than a BMW sorry I ever changed.

Stats posted here before showed that BMWs occupy a very small % of the marketshare here, they simply stand out more from the ocean of Avensis and Golf we are actually plagued with.
IMO its annoying so many people buy the (admittedly well rounded and well priced) 520d's, it gives a predominantly turf burner wiff to the marque.
Do you ever get into your overpriced german car and ask yourself questions like,
Nope, my German car(s) cost the price of a street of townhouses in Germany when new but do have things like full electric leather heated seats, auto disengages A/C when planting GO pedal, auto tilt rear view mirror when reversing, sunroof, pillarless doors, full OBC control showing litres of fuel left, actual real speed, instant/avg MPG all switchable to Metric and imperial, rear wheel steering, electric sunblind, the same Drag Co-Efficient as a Prius but doesnt look like $hit etc.

Its super easy to find well spec'ed German cars, dont blame the car for the rubbish choices of the average Irish motorist.

As an industrial designer I feel that BMWs are in fact under-rated (not under-priced!).

An awful lot of thought goes into their design. My mother got into my 5 series the other day and said its a bit simple and plain looking inside. She didn't realise what a compliment to BMW that was...

It's sister car, the Lexus IS200 is meant to be. And that's an absolute plastic mess on the inside.

i would happily drive a 2-3 yr old non BMW with good spec over a entry level beemer. I do like BMW also, 3 series not ashamed to say that.

I actually think that BMW's interiors are much nicer than say Merc interiors. Some of the Merc interiors have a very plastic feel. I also don't like the way there is a gap between the centre console and the dash on modern Mercs. Just doesn't look right.

Interiors is prob the one place where Audi have it over both BMW and Merc. They get well beaten in most of the other facets though.

i 100% agree, seen a few of your posts on here and a few of your cars are smashers alright, i was just making the point that the vast majority of german cars over here have been bought for the premium badge and the new number plate and been spec'd extremely badly, with cloth, hubcaps, fog blanks etc which is stupid carry on.
Do you actually drive a Toyota ? If so, people in glass houses and all that....

i do currently, but have owned many different cars from other manufacturers. in the last year i've owned 4 cars, 2 european and 2 japanese and all have had a bare minimum of alloy wheels, air con, central locking, front fogs and stuff that volkswagens of the same era as i was pruchasing from (early 2000's) could only dream of.

my current 14 year old toyota even has power fold mirrors amongst other things.

    tl;dr : buy a well spec'd car, not a volkswagen badge.

I just don't link Toyota's with being well speced. Engines and gearboxes which will do 300k, yes.

If I wanted a well speced Japanese car, I'd most likely buy a Honda. The equipment in the Accord is excellent.

if you import they are, but again i agree most irish toyotas are just as spartan.

As was stated by ardennes, my car the starlet feels like a biscuit tin, and at motorway speeds on a wet windy day does have you in a cold sweat. but in 1998 toyota were giving out 3 door city cars with electric windows, mirrors, heated power folding mirrors, remote central locking, driver and passenger airbags, air con, CD changers etc all as standard in japan. show me a 98 polo with any of that.

in the same year in the irish starlet, all you got from that list was the drivers airbag.

irish people need a hold of themselves. i'd never even consider buying new in ireland (even if i had the money :P) when cars elsewhere are just so much better.

You just stated a car from its origin country was spec'd to the nines while its Irish equivalent was not... only an airbag did you say?

The Polo's from that generation have airbags as well. Plus electric windows as standard. Something that baffles me to this day.

Most over-rated cars at the moment are VAG diesels.

I'd drive a nicely speced E39 over ANY modern VAG. So much more value for money!

Actually while on the subject of extras,

Seen a 94 Ford Granada the other day,
    Leather Interior,
    Heated and electric front seats.
    Electric Rear Seats!
    Electric sunroof/windows/mirrors
    CD Player and Tape Deck,
    Wipers for the front lights,
    Puddle Lights on all doors,

Sooooooo much more cooler than 99% of modern cars!

There are some things that need to be said after reading through this thread with a lot of drivel within.
People who say "I want a beemer when I have money" don't know what they're on about or why they want one.
Many Beemers are under spec'd and over priced, many are excellent and class leading.
Golfs are good all-rounders but excel at nothing.
1.9 TDi Golfs are fairly crap.
VW quality is nowhere near where it's perceived to be in this country.
FWD Audi owners are the pinnacle of motoring ignorance.
A FWD BMW would have no reason to exist and should be crushed.
Toyota had gone steadily downhill in the last 10 years until the GT86 came along and gave them a point again.
There's more, but that'll do for now.

My father owns a 5 series is he a ganster?

Old 3 series are poverty spec? You can spec an E36 with,
    Electric sunroof, windows, mirrors, seats,
    Leather standard or sports,
    Heated Seats,
    Electric Lumbar Support,
    Duel Climate Control,
    Alarm and remote locking,
    Traction control, abs etc...
    Heated mirrors and door locks,
You can get the dash to digitally display road speed, avg speed, current speed etc....

Im not even thinking of half the stuff you can get.

Don't talk about things you know nothing about.

sure you can spec any car up. i'm sure you can get most of those in a new fiat panda if you ask for them.

the question is more like - what does the average irish e36 have as standard?

i've seen many with hub caps, probably manual windows etc.

why pay all that money for a BMW badge to get a worse kitted out car than the ford focus next to it that cost half the price but has twice the goodies.

My father owns a 5 series is he a ganster?

Old 3 series are poverty spec? You can spec an E36 with,
    Electric sunroof, windows, mirrors, seats,
    Leather standard or sports,
    Heated Seats,
    Electric Lumbar Support,
    Duel Climate Control,
    Alarm and remote locking,
    Traction control, abs etc...
    Heated mirrors and door locks,
You can get the dash to digitally display road speed, avg speed, current speed etc....

Im not even thinking of half the stuff you can get.

Don't talk about things you know nothing about.

If you lived in Dublin you would see all the scumbag criminals in the car of choice e60 5 series,

on the 3 series, first of all I have yet to see an old one with heated seats, secondly a lot an i mean a lot of the ones I viewed were retro fitted with cd players as they came new with CASSETE players thats right no cd player in these luxury 3 series's here just one recent example 2k for this classy an stlying (not my words) that of the adds http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4068616 absolute poverty spec not to mention the mechanic failures in these mainly being the head gasket which is a major problem in them so dont insult my intelligence by claiming im ignorant on the bmw brand.

Most Focusi i see are basic too?

You seem to think EVERY BMW driver scrapes together the money to just buy the badge and then can't afford options?

Fact is most people in this country want a new reg plate and diesel and couldn't care less about options.
